    I spent the first 30 years of my life in 'Warfumstow' and lived only a few minutes walk from the station. You would not believe how much it has changed since the 60s. Regarding Ray Dudley Way, I knew him. We both worked for the local hospital radio station and he did a children's show immediately before my Saturday afternoon sports show. A lovely man who did a lot of charity work, and who campaigned for the footpath to be established. Sadly, he died before it was done.

    I suspect Geoff is hoping the Overground gets split into six distinct lines not only to make it easier for people to navigate using the Tube map, but also because that's then a load more "End of the Line" videos that can be made. 🙂

    This is my first tube station. My Gran lived on a suburban street between Chingford and Walthamstow and it was the most amazing thing to get the tube into London. I loved those tiny grey plastic globes hanging from the roof of the tube by metal coils. When I was old enough to hold them...I was a big boy! :)) I probably stretched the coils on a few before then! The smells, the winds, the whole thing just mesmerised this boy from rural Scotland. I still love it.

      @@vicsams4431 No I think you're right, they were contemplating terminating the northern section at South Woodford I believe. Not sure why it didn't happen, possibly funding. I suppose the Central Line already connects with the City and West End, so would have been little logistical benefit except reducing over crowding at rush hours.

      The original plans for what is now referred to as Crossrail 2 were in fact the "Chelsea-Hackney" tube. It would have utilised the District Line Wimbledon branch as far as Parsons Green, interchange with the District at Fulham Broadway, then crossing London to take the Central branch from Leytonstone to Hainault.

      Yes, originally the only means of access to the Victoria Line platforms was from the BR (now Overground) platforms. The subway under the road Geoff referred to then didn't exist, and tickets could only be obtained from the joint ticket offices. Unlike other Victoria Line stations, there were then no automatic ticket gates, just manned barriers to each of the two Chingford line platforms. The site now occupied by the bus station was originally a park, and the bus terminus was immediately in front of the station. How times change!!

    Many thanks, Geoff. I was born and grew up in Walthamstow in the 50s and 60s - the line goes fairly close to under where my secondary school was. I remember the Victoria Line opening and going on the first day of operation from Central to the temporary terminus at Highbury and Islington and back. The line gave Walthamstow a real lift, with the new ability to get to Central London quickly, compared with the slow Chingford to Liverpool Street trains. New bus routes appeared at the same time, to connect with the tube. It was sad, though to see the Green Line coach 718 service (Harlow - Walthamstow - Victoria - Windsor) disappear, as the core of the route was made unnecessary by the new line.

    • @ianmcclavin
      @ianmcclavin Рік тому +2

      Yes, the 718's partial replacement at the northern end was the 702, which only ran from Walthamstow to Harlow and Bishop's Stortford. (The Victoria to Windsor section continued for many years after). With the cross platform interchange available at Finsbury Park, the usefulness of having the line from Walthamstow was evident from day 1, even more so after the subsequent extensions!!

    Being from the other end of this island, I never knew much of London growing up (didn’t visit until I was 14 and went to the Royal Tournament at Earls Court with my mum), other than what i saw on the TV. I grew up watching London’s Burning. Sunday nights before bedtime. Getting really invested in the travails of Sicknote, Bayleaf and the rest. Really nice to see one of their appliances has been saved.

    I’ve been here a few times as it used to be the local station for an old friend. Bit miffed I never heard of the pump house museum as both of us would be dead interested in that!
