I feel lucky to have grown up near NYC where a lot of these toys first came in. The toy stores in my area were always stacked with Godaikin robots. Unfortunately they were too expensive for me at the time but I have collected most of them in the late 80s and early 90s. Of course Voltron was the first one I got! My favorite is Leopardon, but Godmars is close. Thanks for this little lore documentary of sorts!

Thanks for this. At one point, I had a few Godaikin. Denjiman, Laserion, and GodMars and one other. The store had a Dancouga but it was sold by the time I had the money for it. Back then, I was just a teenager and didn't know anything about any of these robots or where they came from. I just thought they were cool. And they still are. My Godaikin were not thrown out or lost. My family went through a financial hardships and I sold all of them and Transformers and Mospeada and others purely to put food on the table. Many years later, the adult me sold off a Bismark DX for the same reason. At least all of them went to people who knew what they were and cared for them as much as I did. And now I know the story behind where Godaikin came from. Thanks!

As a huge fan of Japanese culture, and anime etc, I found this video endlessly fascinating. I always respected Transformers, Voltron, (and Zoids,) as that early taste of Japan in those early days when Japanese media was not nearly as accessible. (That changed quickly after Nintendo's NES hit of course.) I knew that Shogun Warriors and Diaclone had a brief run here, but I didn't know about Godaiken. Thanks for the history lesson!

By the late 1980s, Bioman & Laserion were the only English dubbed shows on ABS-CBN in my country. Voltes V & Daimos were moved to IBC in 1989 which began their Tagalog dub debut, including Cyborg 007.

I grew up in old NYC. in 1977 there was a store on 59th and 5th that sold popnica and bull mark well as the Chinatown stores. For books the was Zen Oriental bookstore for all ones Manga and Roman album needs. There was also a Japanese toy store on 33rd and 2nd Ave I remember going to in 1980 where my friend got a Japanese microman figure along with a vehicle called the Bongo-2. I will check out this article but the information is not correct. The Forbidden Planet was absolutely awesome I brought the macross VHS from the store when it was a huge space on 14th and Broadway, unfortunately due to gentrification it is a shadow of its former self. I miss my old NYC it gave me so much, now it’s just hipster central U.S.A. I still have the Japanese action figures I grew up with box and all.

did they originally first release in japan? If so what year were they released in japan? 70s? or 80s?

Jay M Sun Vulcan and Combattra were released in Japan in 1978 under the Popy brand. They were soon followed in 1979 by Voltes V, Gardian or Gordian (in Japan), and Godsigma. Late 1980 arrived Daltanious followed by all the rest on into 1981, Goggle V being the last in that year. All under Popy before arriving in the US for the Christmas season 1982 as the Godaikins.

Jay M Japanese toys and robots can be a deep hole if you stray into everything and variants. Just focus on what you like most first and pursue that. And if you can get some cheap deals on other stuff along the way, then take it. All of these toys aren’t getting any cheaper. Also ask me questions on stuff and where to find things. I’ll help you out. I’m also on Instagram under the same name. It’s easy to hit me up there as the chat system works fast. So, enjoy yourself but don’t dig a financial hole during the hunt. Stay focused and patient. If you want nice examples, save for them and don’t buy junk. And I’ll be around if you need help.
