Honestly the thing that made that scene with Jason asking Bruce why he didn't kill Joker better in the movie is when Jason said that he just wants Bruce to specifically kill him, because he took him away from Bruce. That made me tear up when watching it.
For a long time, that's how I felt towards my Mom after I was put into a foster home.
I was too young to understand back then. She did everything she could to get me back, but I was so angry.
@@Logan7281X Sorry you had to go through that. I mean it was understandable why you would be angry and sad about it when you’re young. But hope things are better now between you and your Mom?
@MakiMaki
They did.
Sometime into my teenage years, things got better and before she passed in 2012, we were good.
@@Logan7281X That's good, happy for you man.
This storyline is one of the prime examples of an interconnected universe really restraining the creative team, the movie proves that it would've been much better without Winick being forced to cram in the Secret Society/Infinite Crisis stuff just because it was happening in the comics at the same time
I also love how Tiff sits there listening and acting like she doesn’t know this book in and out and is asking the question the people who are watching and didn’t read the boom want to lol. She is amazing
7:50 Yeah, yeah. Let's all make fun of Boomerang. It's all fun and games... unless your name is Tim Drake.
LMAOOOOOOO
The animated movie was so much better. It greatly benefits from being streamlined
Yea i agree but wasn’t Jason Todd brought back in Infinite crisis not this comic?
@@rando9326 No this was before Infinite Crisis
Omg!! I literally almost just said the exact same thing 😂😂
Hey, written by the same guy, shows some improvement.
Imagine what other comic storylines could benefit from this streamlining...
My jaw dropped with the "Jason could be Damien's dad" hypothesis. That would have been great.
Too bad they didn't think to do that.
Jason would have been a better father to Damien, as he understands him far more than Bruce ever did.
@@darkebuddha that is so true
@@darkebuddha Don't they hate each other? I'm pretty sure Damian does not like Jason for being "weak" for dying, and I think Jason thinks he's a brat.
Karsten Powers yeah
32:44 - At the time, Black Mask was the Carmine Falcone of Gotham. All of the gangs paid tribute to him, and he ran crime at just about every level. So by targeting Black Mask, he’s targeting the biggest crime lord in the city.
I thought the animated film was much better. Mostly in pacing. Maybe this would have been better to read monthly, but it's pacing was all over the place and it just felt messy. Even if the overall story and ideas were good.
The film was definitely paced better. It kept all the best parts of the comic and cut out all the garbage. The only thing the comic did better was actually showing all the heads in the duffel bag.
I never understood ComicPOP crews issue with the "kill one person Batman won't stop". Cause Jokers not the only one mass murdering people in Gotham.....Riddler, Two-Face, Penguin, Black Mask.....they all have rap sheets two miles long.....the point of Batman is he doesn't cross that line no matter what......he's not the Punisher
Great point. Because Batman’s whole deal is keeping what happened to his parents from ever happening to anyone else…so let’s say he kills, Joker, then why stop there, why not Two Face, and Riddler and so on, and so forth until no more super crime in Gotham…why stop there…what about Lex Luthor, or Captain Cold, or Ocean Master? He’d be constantly talking himself into why he should off these people. He would never stop until everyone’s parents were safe.
The bad thing about working the night shift: missing Back Issues right as it's released. The good thing about the night shift: listening to it the next night at work. Thank you ComicPOP for helping me get through hours of work tedium.
I really like this book, cause there are some cool moments and Jason is my favorite character, but the movie is way better. Cause it's the same writer going back, cutting out all the fat, and going back to streamline and improve his story. Also the movie is kinda what got me more into comics and DC so I also love it for that reason
Idk how they dont have a million followers, this channel is amazing! Been watching for 4 years now
I always thought of Red Hood as a combination of Winter Soldier and Punisher
Shady SlimLp he's pre-winter soldier winter solider
Anarchic Arachnid wdym? tragic sidekick who returns from the dead and takes on a new persona
Yeah but winter soldier came after red hood
Andrew Ganus no actually Winter Soldier came out 2 months before lol
By Retcon, technically he appeared 2 years before (Hush's Jason Todd scene), also Jim was teasing that the return was real even back then.
So Tiffany's "OK" makes me feel seen. That has been the noise my brain makes every time Sal has described the plot of a comic book to me.
Also, I kinda love the idea that Joker let himself get caught by Jason Todd because he knew then Batman would have to save HIM, and that's hilarious. And Joker, scorpion on the turtle's back that he is, tries to kill them all as soon as he can.
I know Sal doesn’t like Jason’s resurrection because he thinks it ruins everything his death stood for. I understand why and respect it. But I disagree. I don’t think it fully ruins it. Because Batman in the comic states that “it doesn’t change anything” when Alfred asks if Bruce wants the robin memorial removed. And I love Jason coming back to life. Specific as his original interpretation as a villain/anti-hero and not a member of the batfamily like he is nowadays. I love the idea that Jason, his son who’s death represents Bruce’s rush to find a companion and a friend in his crusade, and that also represents all of Bruce’s ideals personified in the beacon of light that Robin represents to his darker Batman. I love all of those concepts being confront by a resurrected Jason who died in the middle of Bruce’s crusade against crime, who died because of Bruce’s ideals of not killing criminals, and who died in the hands of Batman’s greatest foe, Jason forces himself to grow up and grow out of those restrictions to then face Batman with the “reality” of what he should have done and what he should do. Jason not only represents Batman’s greatest failure because of his death, but he also represents the repercussions of Batman’s moral code and the counter act to that moral code. All the more impactful knowing that the “counter act” is coming from someone he trained with the foundation of Bruce’s moral’s and should know better.
This story is pretty good, but the changes Judd Winick made in the movie boosts this story to unquestioned greatness. It removes all the minutia you don't need and makes logical retcons where its needed to fit the mythos.
The movie also just makes the story a lot more coherent and puts certain moments in much more appropriate places, like Bruce not suspecting Red Hood being Jason until he calls him 'Bruce', having Jason only encounter and start torturing Joker with a crowbar near the end. no face reveal of Jason under the mask until the final fight between him and Bruce, etc.
Black mask looking out the window and seeing red hood with a bazooka is amazing
Has anyone ever made a story about Mr. Freeze learning about Lazarus Pits?
That might have been a decent setup for Red Hood and him being a tighter hero-villain pair. Or something.
There actually was a story about Freeze and the pits. He got to put his wife in one, cure her disease, and then somehow she became able to shoot fire and raise the dead, and she called herself Lazara, and the only way to stop her was to freeze her again, and it was just dumb. And it all happened just before the 52 reboot, so none of it matters!
I don’t know if this is a better answer but instead Batman’s argument should’ve simply been:”Because I’m not judge jury and executioner. That’s not for me to decide. My mission, and the mission of all Robins by extension is to save Gotham, Gotham should decide for itself what Jokers fate is.”
To me this makes more sense as to why Batman doesn’t cross that line, even if it raises the question why doesn’t Gotham just give Joker the death penalty
This is gonna be good *immediately grabs popcorn*. Also "This is the best day of my life"...
One of my favorite Batman stories, had to watch this right away
Sorry work, I have higher priorities to attend to.
Nick Grimes Higher priories than Back Issues? Not possible :p
Denton Films he’s saying that back issues is his higher priority in contrast to work
Boltup 2101 Oh you are right. My bad I misread that one
Denton Films it’s all good brother
Man I miss the black leather jacket on Red Hood I'm glad 3 Jokers brought it back, that's by far the best suit for him imo. The brown is iconic tho.
33:00 Black Mask was established very heavily like he ruined and Owned Gotham in the War Games and No Man's Land Storyline.. And hence that is why he was important to this as well..
Judd Winick understands the character of Red Hood better than Scott Lobdell does, and Under the Red Hood is one of my favorite stories.
Bro Red Hood Rebirth is great. Lobdell is a great Jason writer. Judd Winick is good though, and Id like to see him return to comics.
John S Lobdell has been better since Rebirth started (I enjoyed New 52 RHatO in spite its many many problems). But Winick is still the only one who I feel firmly understands the character.
John S I would agree with you on that his run on Rebirth was great but at the beginning it was, they are changing his overall design he kinda looks like a Mortal Kombat character.
Comic book hero and villain designs change sometimes. No need to bash the writer over a design concept. Let’s give it an issue or two of the new look and story before we complain about it. Otherwise it looks like we just don’t like change in general.
SharsChosen Expressing dislike and disappointment isn’t really bashing. And I’ve now seen the design so I feel comfortable saying that I strongly dislike it. Yes character designs change. Sometimes they’re good (like the black body armor with the red bat and the brown jacket) sometimes they’re not. You can appreciate the effort and work that goes into creating something without liking the outcome. I don’t need a couple issues to know if I’ll like the new design because I’ve seen it. I need a couple issue to decide if I like the new story direction.
A tangent: but the movie version voice cast is like the second best right behind BtAS crew.
Bruce Greenwood (from a lot of things like Admiral Pike in the 09 Star Trek) - Batman/Bruce Wayne
Jensen Ackles (from Supernatural) - Red Hood
Niel Patrick Harris (from HIMYM) - Nightwing
John DiMaggio (Jake the Dog from Adventure Time and alot of other cartoons) - Joker
Wil Agaton Mark Hamill voicing Joker would’ve made it better.
Darkdragon902 Though Hamill is the definitive Joker in my eyes, I actually really enjoyed and preferred DiMaggio’s for this movie. He did such a great job of switching from laughing hysterically to deadly creepy that it gave me chills the first time I watched the end of the warehouse scene.
The lean. The mean. Ass kicking machine! Jason Todd.
One of the best stories. Red Hood has become an amazing character thanks to Scott Lobdell (never thought that would happen) in this Rebirth era. He feels more like Spike Spiegel with some Punisher added in.
My first experience with this story was the watching the video in pre-release on preview night at SD Comic Con....and it was good.
I think the best bit is when Jason says why he should kill the joker
I thought Batman's logic on killing Joker made sense from a personal angle. He knows that Joker should be killed. However, killing someone purposefully, is still an exception to the rule. And that is a morale break, no matter how justified. So, how long until another villain proves to be a huge threat, warranting another murder. Slowly, either over days, months or even years, Batman would slowly ease into becoming a murderer. That would lead to him eventually not even keeping murder as a reserve solution. And that would cause him to be no better than the others.
@@bern9642 Your argument is not one.
@@bern9642 Now we're talking!
If Damian was suddenly the son of red hood and they went on a villain-murder spree together I'd lose it! what a great idea
The problem was they brought back Jason and then no one could agree what to do with him. It wasn’t until New 52 they finally decided on, this is the direction we’re taking the character. Everyone stick with it.
This is like if "Two Brothers" was a comic.
*Winick:* "The Secret Society is coming, and they're also in the story, and Captain Nazi is going to come and cross-attack Batman and Red Hood. But let's get back to Batman and Red Hood, because they have a bond. You don't want to know about it or how Jason's back here, but I'll tell you one thing. Chemo is crashing into Blüdhaven and what're you going to do then?"
"Two Masks. But also Black Mask, and Deathstroke..."
I enjoyed the animated flick more than the book
same here
I enjoy the book more, but I am not blind to the fact that it is not perfect. For example, I think they give up the ghost too early on the Jason Todd and Joker thing. I enjoy the mystery of the book, but the movie is very well done. It consolidates all the extraneous characters and bloat and makes it mostly a story of Batman, Black Mask, Red Hood, and the Joker
Black Bantha I agree. The story from the movie can stand on it's own, while the comic story suffers from all the continuity that is built upon. 90% of the characters that appear in the comic are useless, and have no role to play at all.
Jason Todd is a badass I actually like Red X version of him the best( Red X is totally Jason Todd) and I wish they would use Red Hood and his Outlaws(atleast Artemis) on the Titans as kind of the antagonist/antihero basically I want Jason Todd to be Vegeta and Nightwing to be Goku(but Dick Grayson would act like the Teen Titans cartoon version of him)
Doesn't make sense for Red X to be Jason Todd, Dick Grayson is still Robin and at this point has never been Nightwing. We have never heard of Jason Todd being Robin which is definitely something that Dick would've talked about. And finally, Red X is slightly taller than Robin, it wouldn't make sense that Jason, who is traditionally younger, would be taller than Robin. It would make more sense for it to be someone like Roy Harper
Ben Okazaki I'm pretty sure it makes less sense for it to be Roy Harper since he's an established ally of the Titans. He's even a part of Titans East.
Also, I would point out that besides the fact he exists, we know nothing about Jason in Teen Titans continuity. So your reasons don't really apply. And Robin also hasn't talked about having been Batman's sidekick either, wouldn't he have talked about that?
I thought that Red X was going to be revealed to be either a clone of Slade or Slade's actual son from the Comics Grant Wilson
He references batman multiple times.
Jason Todd should have killed Joker, and then once Bruce *died*, and Dick became Batman -- Jason could have been his arch nemesis.
could've been a badass elseworlds book
"Oh my goodness gracious, I’ve been bamboozled!"
Earlier today I was listening to an episode of the elseworlds exchange and this book was brought up and I thought to myself "this stories way too well known everyone knows who red hood is they'll never cover this on back issues." Thanks comic pop for always keeping me on my toes.
ive been waiting sooo long for this ! thanks !
29:10 this is where the graphic novel end when I read it. Like the trade paperback officially ended on that note. At least the one I rented from the library
I had no idea about the Hush retcon. Crazy.
First time commenting, but I had to to thank you so much for doing Under the Red Hood. It is my favorite stories for him. As much as I am enjoying the Rebirth series, the original return story still reads great for me. Thank you for your coverage of this, your comments and criticisms actually enhanced the book for me. I always wondered whether it was lack of oxygen that caused his brain damage from his resurrection, but now i see that it was the damage the joker and his bomb performed that caused it. That wasn't the only insight i got from this episode of back issues. Explanations for why Red Hood likely targeted Black Mask have been put in the comments before me so I won't reiterate them here. I hope to see more Red Hood in the future (Lost Days is a good place to go after Under the Red Hood) but I know that there are many other stories that need their time in the spotlight. I really hope this video performs well enough to show that the Red Hood is a character that people are interested in hearing more about.
So I’m going back and rewatching a bunch of the olderish back issues episodes you guys did, and I just realized that you did all the big books that eventually led to Battle for the Cowl. Yet you’ve never done it or the other books that fallow, except Batman Black Mirror. I personally love the Dick Grayson Batman era and would really love to see Ben, Ethan, and Tiff's reactions to Jason and Scarlet, Professor Pyg, Flamingo, and Absence. You could do it like you do Ultimate Spider-Man, where you slowly go volume by volume.
YES! One of my favourite stories and a book I sent! What a lovely day!
Ah yes, one of the BEST Bat family members
i’m glad to see back issues in my sub box after this long ass day
23:24 I shall name this guy...Lieutenant Louieville Slugger!
One of the few examples of an animated comic book movie that's better than the source material (largely due to condensing the plot to its essential elements).
Number of graphic novels purchased since discovering Back Issues: 61.
Wow that book sucked lol they totally refined and made it so much better in the movie
I love you guys so much I've been waiting for this forever thank you so much
Yes another back issues and one of my favorite Batman stories
Always love coming back to these episodes
Yay Batman under the red hood
I love this comic and the art is beautiful. It’s one of my favorites.
Oooh always great when you do a big iconic story. Love the standalone stuff and the crossovers too, any chance of Nightwing New Order?
Btw is there a new Elseworlds this week? I checked Twitter and didn't see an update.
Enjoying a milky way midnight as i watch this
The movie is sooooooooo much better
Also he’ll YEAH!!! Not as good as Black mirror but still a good story!
BurnedChiliMan he will yeah?
Lol I was on my ten and had to rush :P
BurnedChiliMan I actually thought it was better then Black Mirror. The animated movie is just as good.
Wild Fire the movie was definitely awesome! I’m just a fanboy for Dick Grayson Batman.
Did you guys get a new camera? Cause this looks so crisp and smooth
So killing is Batman's version of Pringles?
Man...Joel is gonna be PISSED after hearing you diss Ollie like that😂
Honestly this is one of my favorite Batman stories.
I'm am legit HYPED for this thanks guys.
It would be funny if Batman started shaking after holding a gun like Samuel L Jackson in Loaded Weapon.
OMG red hood thank you back issues I love this story!
I have been waiting for this moment all my life
I agree wholeheartedly with many other commenters that the animated movie does the same story better, with less bloat. The only place where the comic’s bloat was a little better, in my opinion, was with Captain Nazi and Hyena attacking Jason, as opposed to generic cyborgs in the movie. Since they kept a character as seemingly tangiential as Amazo in the movie, I think they could have used other recognizable, or at least colorful, villains as contract killers, and since the movie presumably existed within its own isolated continuity, they could’ve killed off whoever they wanted. Maybe Killer Moth, or Zsasz, or other C-list bat rogues.
Here’s hoping that a comment on a years-old video helps feed the algorithm and boost you guys towards the greater subs that you deserve!
I love red hood, i just wish theyd do more with him.
Enjoying three jokers?
Jason Todd FOREVER!!!
Really hoping you lot cover White Knight.
I know Sal hasn't played Arkham Knight yet but I don't know if Sal is read or watched the plot summary on youtube for the game, because it brings back Jason Todd perfectly, basically he never dies and instead Joker makes Batman think he dies and plans to use him against Batman in an Ultimate Scheme, its written by Paul Dini and the plot is similar to Batman Beyond Return of the Joker, the comics should have adapted that version of Jason Todd's return a long time ago and I don't know why they haven't
Unfortunately, Arkham Knight isn't written by Dini. But, it's still a decent game, good finale. Not nearly as strong as the first two which were written by Dini.
oh shit, well either way still has those connections
The RED Samurai a problem with that story is that batman remembers events were he was not there/not part of the video joker sent him, like the conversation between joker and jason, also batman replaces jason even before finding jason's body
Honestly I hate that version of it, I hate the J in Jason's cheek, I hate how he actually believed that Batman, who thought of Jason like a son would actually believe Batman would leave him behind, I hate the unnecessary bringing back of Joker AGAIN and AGAIN, I hate the "Joker venom". It ruined for me what was otherwise an amazing series of games
The RED Samurai Uh... That would require a retcon of the already convoluted story of Jason Todds return. At least the one we have doean't alter the events of Death in the Family.
Brilliant. Loved the film. This is gonna be good.
Holy Buildup, Batman! Oh my God I've been waiting for this for so long, ever since I discovered the channel in late 2015, thank you comic gods for making this happen. Amen.
once you Comic Pop, you can't Comic Stop!
The Rick and morty reference got me 😂
Wow yes been waiting for this one.
I guess I’ll be the first to keep asking for more ultimate Spider-Man. Specifically the clone saga part. I read it on marvel unlimited recently and I’d love to hear sal talk about it.
I’m also going to enjoy watching sal try so hard to not shit talk the red hood since he should know the internet will rip him apart if he does.
If they do it in order, which I’m fine with, I’m pretty sure there is one more story arch with shadow cat or something before the clone saga. I’d prefer he skip it since I literally don’t remember what happened but I’m sure the crew would find a way to make it entertaining
I think Sal might like Red Hood/Adult Jason Todd if he read the Rebirth Outlaws run lol. Jason goes through some character development in that series and a few others.
Maybe Todd has to double-tap the button in order for the explosion to happen like Spider-Man has to double-tap his web shooters in order to make the webs
36:02 aren't the Maronies and the falcones dead and gone by this point?
I think Long Halloween is canon in this timeline
25:09
Haha 😂!!
Superman: What the hell are you doing Bruce? What's with all of these questions?
Batman: My angsty dead Robin teenage son came back to life through some mystical bullish*t and is taking on the Gotham underworld with guns Clark.
Superman *blank stare: So...fear toxin?
Batman *grabs Superman by the collar: No you Fing idiot, Jason Todd!! My son is back from the grave.
Superman: Ah, so you haven't slept in 5 days...got it.
Batman: I've got to figure this angsty dark sh*t out and probably ground my resurrected son. See you later Clark.
Superman *nervous laughter: Okay Bruce whatever you say 😅.
1:05:28 "That would be an amazing retcon". It would be, also that would make a hilarious sound bite
Is Ethan Okay? i was gonna make a joke about Thanos snapping him away but im a little worried :c
Matthew Nash He was on last week man 😂
Hey dog thanks for the video I really love red Hood😇😇
Been waiting on this one
32:14 Best part of the commentary in my opinion XD
The only people who haven’t come back is Martha Wayne and Ben Parker
33:45 ish, sometimes you just can’t get rid of a bomb !
Batman Vampire or No Man's Land, pls
I second the _Red Rain_ trilogy!
I'd like _No Man's Land_ as well, but that might be too big for a single episode. Or maybe not, _Knightfall_ was one of the first things they did (although a lot less happens in that than in _No Man's Land_ so yeah)
You know, I’ve read the stories, I know the context behind them, I know their true power. And even I can’t take a team up between hyena count vertigo and captain nazi seriously.
I hate this books explanation on why Batman won't kill. I choose to believe that Bruce has such a deep hatred and disdain for death because of his parents death that he won't allow anyone else to die, no matter what.
Lol Jason uses literally TONNES of explosives in this story, how is he storing and transporting all that around Gotham unnoticed?
Anybody else notice Ben is wearing the same shirt from the A Death In The Family episode? Just me? Ok I'll be quiet then.
Jason's son Damien ,DC won't do in main continuity, but it may be a possibility of elseworlds.
Also isn't captain nazi a captain marvel junior villian
Tevya Smolka yes, i think he killed juniors parents.
Oh MA DAMN. Yes One of my favourites
Hyena is one of the great Firestorm villains. since he cant alter the atoms of living things he has a lot of fearsome nature villains like Hyena, Weasel, Typhoon, and Black Bison who has mystic powers .
The 3 Jokers are Death in the Family, Killing Joke and First Appearance Joker probably to correspond with the three protagonists of the book who're Jason, Babs and Bruce.
I always felt like Batman's no kill/if I kill one I'll kill more rule was him acknowledging that he's just as fucked up as the rest of his villains, if not more so.
Holy shit. You guys did it.
