    Ideal opportunity to give it a clean out / dredge. Then, rebuild the breached bank that's caused the drain off. Great video.

    This brought back memories for me. In 1990 a wooden culvert under my local canal collapsed causing a substantial vortex. Several nearby properties were flooded and the access road blocked. Initially large hay roll bales were thrown into the whirlpool in an attempt to stem the flow until the emergency crews arrived. Relatively the canal is broader and deeper than average. So you can imagine The disruption it caused.
    Great video thanks for posting Brad. Subscribed.

    It looks more like a Levee breach than a sinkhole. Thanks for sharing.

  • @anthonyhough1538
    @anthonyhough1538 6 років тому +4

    Possibly a culvert going under the canal has failed . The ground on the right hand side seems to have a ditch there and be a lot lower than the left side ,so probably water may have started leaking and then failed . Badgers are really helpful in banks collapses too! But defo no sinkhole !! They laid a thin layer of clay all over the dug out strata , and very often turned a load of sheep in it and penned them in for a while , to puddle it in properly ! This in the late 1700's which was when it was built .

    Looks like a lot of "housing" and livelyhood has been lost! Be a good time for a canal cleanup. Yep you need to metal detect a 200 year old canal, should be gold and silver in there.

    This is part of the Shropshire union canal the Middlewich branch, my mate that works for the water ways has told me it was caused by badgers and rabbits that have burrowed into the bank underneath the canal and the bank collapsed taking a portion of the canal with it..the canal bridge over the river is just the other side of crater were you can see the river....

    Nice Video! The sinkhole title drew me in.. still was interested in the canal giving way just as much... But I watch Brummies Outdoors & I think I have seen you before on there, contributing to a group outing... So I Subscribed & Liked your video. It was nice of the young lady to hold your camera while you dropped over that fence.

    That's one pretty major breach. I remember the lock pound being drained for maintenance on the Keadby and South Yorkshire where I lived. Got the usual obligatory shopping trolleys, bicycles, road cones etc but right at the bottom was a WW2 motorcycle and sidecar combo which is now restored and in a museum...... crazy! A few miles upstream I know of several cars in there. Local joyriding yobs or guys doing insurance jobs use to drive them in. The waterways authorities have probably removed them now but never ceased to amaze me the stuff that found its way in there. K&SY navigation a good bit deeper as larger 'Sheffield' commercial barges once plied their trade along there along with Richard Dunstons shipbuilding which launched some sizeable vessels into the cut but that's a story in itself.

  • @rstephe

    Great footage and thank you for sharing but I do not think this is a sinkhole. I think this was a washout of a canal wall or bank. Still very interesting to see the power of water at the washout point.

  • @bonnielee8935

    As far as why there may be all of those tires in the canal. Perhaps some boats had tires on the sides to act like bumpers, attachments rot off and thus the tires fall into the canal. Just a guess.

    It looks like the levee on the side of the canal broke and washed out. A sinkhole would go down, that water went out through the side and took the trees with it. Would not have wanted to be downstream of that one, would have been a heck of a ride, lol.

  • @RustyNail5856

    Great video, they need to dredge the canal and put the mud in the hole , that would make the canal deeper and fill in the hole. from the USA. take care.

  • @robertgeorge8166
    @robertgeorge8166 6 років тому

    you can make out the original depth of the canal from your footage. The opposite side where you are walking you can see the dark silt at edge followed by the clay beneath. sometimes there are measurements on the original concrete cills indicating 6ft at cill. The dark silt has built up over the years covering the clay that was actually placed by hand and "puddled" to create a watertight seal. considering when this was done I find amazing.

    Great vid. I wonder how much silt has filled in over the centuries. I can't believe the canal bridged OVER another river. a monumental task at the time I'm sure. I live on the Mississippi river and often ponder being able to see thru the water. Brad, when you turned 30 you aged 10 years. HA. you'll need a selfie stick that doubles as a walking stick soon.

    Sinkhole? Where? That's the embankment giving way not a sinkhole, a common thing with canals, a bit like a landslide.

  • @cletrac12c72
    @cletrac12c72 6 років тому +1

    Thats a washout NOT a sinkhole! you can clearly see the canal wall is gone where the water cut through it. That canal has at least eight feet of black silt in it.

    • @interdec
      @interdec 6 років тому

      cletrac12c Canals are never eight feet deep to start with, only about 4 in the middle with sloping edges. Barges are often stuck on the bottom when the locks are used too frequently. But there is certainly a lot of crap in there.

    Someone somewhere is so unlucky, that if they would have been on that canal in a boat, they would have been in just the right spot to have been sucked down that hill and have their boat destroyed. On the way down the hill, it would also explode and catch fire and burn to a cinder despite being surrounded by water. Then they would get stuck and remain there until the verge of death before someone rescues them. They will get rescued and recover, but get a very steep bill that will cause all sorts of other troubles. Of course, someone with that kind of luck usually has some idea of their luck and would avoid doing things that seem potentially dangerous, such as boating on a canal (boat could sink/catch fire/lightning strike). Probably why there was nobody caught up in this. The really unlucky people wouldn't have been around the area.

    Canals had drains with plugs to facilitate cleaning out. Occasional excavtaor snag the pug and all the water runs into nearest river.

    Wow could be up to 5-6 months to fix that.Especially if heavy machinery cannot get to were it has breached.Sides will need shaving down,then the towpath will need under pining & re-piling, then mortared up.New sand & Bentonite clay will be needed to re-line the canal bed.Will cost around £750,000 to fix,Even more if they bring in 30-40 men to work on it.Busy canal with around 5000 boats using it every year.
