- A decades-old law in Missouri does not allow women to file for divorce while they are pregnant, even in cases of domestic violence. The law requires women to disclose whether they are pregnant while filing for the divorce. A new bill introduced by Rep. Ashley Aune is hoping to change that.

Pregnancy is the most dangerous time for women especially because of domestic violence. This is so backwards.
Another reason is why marriage is not seen as an attractive investment anymore.
If a woman decides it's more important to escape the marriage before giving birth than to keep the financial protection of marriage, that should be her choice and the government should make sure help is available.
What is alimony good for?

The law was used to make sure babies weren't born out of wedlock, so they could force father to support it, so no one could honestly call it a bass tart.
No wonder more pregnant people die of homocide than any other cause now. Wonder what the suicide stat is.
I think if men were the only ones penalized for medical termination of pregnancy, a lot of problems would go away.

Limited gov only applies to the feds with these people. They only yell small gov because there is a gov bigger than them. If they were already at the top they wouldn't yell limit anything as far as their power goes.
It doesn't even apply to the Federal level. They'll gladly override county and city too. They have no real consistency of principle, just power and control.
So they won’t make a decision for the people unless their party brings it forward. That’s so sad.

There are never enough beds in women's shelters and you need to know how to access one.
Also, if a woman goes to one. Her child is automatically given to the father because he has a home. The laws do not work for fleeing women

Wait that’s the law in most states not just red/republican states. I live in Washington which is a democratic state and I wasn’t able to get a divorce until I gave birth.
Not sure what year that was but yes you can. If a Judge or other official tries to delay or deny you, there are legal remedies$$$

The only reason for this law is bc they can only get money from child support after the birth of the child, if the woman divorce before birthing, the court doesn't get to steal money.

The government should allow divorce for any reason, and then allow both parties to deal with the social and financial consequences of the divorce. Forcing people together doesn't force them to care for children or promote good family values.

So if any women (under 50 or something like that) wants to file for divorce, do they have to provide a recent negative pregnancy statement from a doctor? This whole thing is unbelievable to my European brain.
The law only says a divorce cannot be finalized during pregnancy, it does say no one can file during pregnancy. DOM's often take months to years to play out. There is the legal issue of paternity being established by marriage. It is common practice to disclose whether the wife is expecting another child in all jurisdictions I am aware of.
My mom was a victim of this. She had to wait to give birth to me before filing for divorce :(

In an abusive relationship, the abuser makes leaving very difficult if not impossible. Not everyone has an adequate support network to rely on.

Probably full or she otherwise can't access it (lack of transport for example)
Probably also brings up issue of custody. I'm guessing that a judge who wouldn't allow a pregnant woman to divorce her abusive partner, would probably think a women's shelter is a worse environment for a child than at home with the other parent. The more I think about it, just imagine what would've happened before women had the right to vote and that is the outcome desired by conservatives.
Abusers manipulate situations so the abused is unable to leave... money, transportation, support system. They make sure those are not available. I know this from experience.

Yes they can take a child away using the fact that she is in a shelter to show she is unable to provide an adequate home for the child and then deeming her unfit because of it...even if she is at the shelter to get away from abuse and she can even have a job too.@@Balletcalvero

This story makes no sense. Is there a law saying that people who are married have to live together? Why would she have to live with her husband while she's getting an divorce just waiting for the baby to be born for it to be finalized. Isn't there family, friends, battered women shelters or get a job and rent a place to live.

It’s all been built by men FOR men at the expense of women. Also fun fact- worldwide sperm counts have fallen to 50%, at which point many men are considered functionally infertile- and its falling 1% every year (as it has been for the past 50), so in 50 years infertile men will be the norm. What men will discover at this time is that it doesn’t actually take a world full of men to keep the genetic viability of the species alive and that in fact the world will thrive without so many aggressive, war mongering, patriarchally obsessed male cult participants.
