  • In this video I ask the question. Are Campsite Pitch Prices getting too expensive?
I ask as I was recently looking to book a one night trip in February and March and found such a contrast in prices. From £9 per night to £32 and in some cases even higher per night.
Camping needs to be assessable to all. But when I see prices at £30 plus per night. Then is it becoming too expensive?

I used to go camping years ago - and so I've been looking at tents to get back into it. So, while I was searching for a tent, and thought I'd check out the campsite prices! Wow, some places in Cumbria are charging more than £50 a night - at those rates I either won't bother or take up wild camping and face the risk of getting moved on. Insanity!

Yes camping is silly money! Premiere Inn and other hotels are better value! B&Bs are getting silly too.

We haven't gone camping in nearly 2 years but started camping in 2008 and up until 2013, it was a cheap holiday about £10-£15 per night. The Daily Mail did an article about camping being a cheap holiday about a decade ago, demand then increased, so prices went up as well as having to book months in advance and pay deposit. Then they started charging for the tent, number of people, size tent, awning and electric hook up. Then add COVID and the cost of living more people are "forced" into it and prices increase more, it becomes robbery. I hope in the next few years prices stabalise and that the people "forced" into it return to their package holidays and prices drop to being more realistic - it's a patch of grass at the end of the day. We might buy a roof box tent for the car or just stick to the premier inn , we won't need to worry about packing away the tent then.

My daughter wants to go camping for her birthday so bought an expensive tent thinking we'll make use of it in the future but didn't realise how expensive camping pitches have gone, I'll be returning it for a much cheaper one because I'm not willing to pay the prices they charge, absolutely ridiculous!

caravan and motorhome membership has gone up a little but the savings over the year IF you caravan regularly are substantial. It also depends when you go and what facilities you need.

Yeah I understand that. But £30 plus for a small tent for one person just staying for one night in February. With access only to a toilet and shower.....Thats a little excessive don't you think?

Hello! I think the problem is what you and me means when we talking about a campsite it's no longer the average visitors demands on a campsite! We like to use toilette and shower and maybee a simple kitchen. Todays "camper" arives in an Rv & Van for 80 000 € and they need very good electric connection, fast connection to water, Satelitte TV & internet very fast of course! Thats a minimum! No we old campers that not like to help the campsites to save money for all uppgradera are lost! Best Regards Peter Eriksson Sweden Europe 😊😊😊 old school camper! I agree with you! But we are out of date! Love Nordic Countrys very you always can free camp minimum 3 days at the same spot! 😊😊😊

Hiya Peter. Most of the campsites Ive been looking for are very basic. Just a field, a toilet and maybe a shower. Thats all. Honestly I think that if some sites are offering wifi then they should give the customer a wifi password. Only once they have paid for wifi then they should be given the password to access the wifi.
That way the campsite can offer basic pitches at a budget price and premium at a higher price and therefore attracting customers who require different levels. Maybe Im wrong. I don't know.

Camping is getting very expensive. Obviously, there are energy prices to consider for showers etc but still expensive for a small piece of grass.

I agree and yeah I totally understand that campsites need to make a profit. But £30-£35 for renting a piece of turf in February is a little OTT

@@ItsaCampingThingI couldn’t agree more! This is the main reason I came out of the Camping and Caravan club after being a member for over 17 years and started staying at non members sites.I too remember when you paid say £5 for a pitch fee plus a couple of more £ per person. You are as you say only renting a pitch of grass, providing your own Tent and everything else needed but now being charged the same nightly charge as staying in luxury of a touring caravan or Motorhome. The only advantage is the peace and quiet ( If not on a large commercial site) away from Motorway and views to die for choices!

£20 a night for a field with a compost toilet seems like a joke to me. but I dont see prices comming down anytime soon. Other sites have very good facilities but take your family and the extras start adding up. compare that to pre covid where I was paying £5 to 7 per night for the same sites

Oh I was seeing £30-£35 at some campsites and thats just for a piece of turf for one person over one night in February. Over multiple nights thats not cheap.
