      No mate , always been £250 as far as I'm aware.

      @The koi guy I know how much development costs, then producing the units, packaging, shipping, IP, salaries etc from my career in R&D so I would say that price isn't a surprise to me. Its not for me to share publicly but the price of the machine that makes the end caps would make your eyes water.
      So in that respect I don't think they are charging a lot for each unit. It just comes down to whether it is worth that much to you in terms of the benefit versus to outlay.

    Having kept aquariums for over 10 years I started in the pond hobby 2 years ago. I was so used to having to use sponges as part of my filtration in canister filters that was my go to mechanical filtration method with a box filter and grog. I can’t believe how simple this system is and no sponges in sight.
    I really need to change my way of thinking. K1 was all new to me and I always thought it had to be used in a moving bed. Thanks to your videos I’m just about to add a shower filter using pumice. Great videos and great for new pond keepers like me

      Thanks Rob, I appreciate that.
      I like to keep things simple and modern K1 mechanical filters are ideal in that respect. Set up correctly they will do a much better job with a fraction of the maintenance. I actually quite enjoy flushing my filters so I do it every day 🍻👍🍻

      Hi Chris, yeah I think it could be a win win situation. I've taken mine in and out just to try it and it literally does take seconds to remove it from the system. You can make a spool piece out of straight pipe that will just slot in to whichever system doesn't have the tempest in 👍👍

    Interesting I swapped out the K1 for the K+ media in my EasyPod and am wondering if it removes the same particles in terms of microns, I must admit, since swapping the media out, the water does look more clearer.

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Mark, yes K+ should give you better fine filtration than normal K1. Micro in theory should be even better as its smaller then K+ but I've not proved that one way or the other.
      Defintely a good move swapping K1 for K+ though 👍👍

  • @andrewmason2879
    @andrewmason2879 3 роки тому +1

    I did not realise it was 25 microns that is really good. The only issue I have with it is when you have cleaned it, the media still looks really mucky. Because it still looks mucky, would any of the muck go back into the pond when you have emptied it? Maybe a sock or something over the outlet when it has been on a few weeks, we would then see if anything is going back into the pond after cleaning. I have seen the home made version of this and with them you can hose the media clean. Do you think you could do this with the tempest if you unscrew the top. Do you think if there is any benefit to doing this? Is this the wrong thing to do? I know you have said before about keeping your filters as clean as possible. Do you think it’s a filter that needs regular cleaning so it does not get to a stage where it looks really mucky? I have seen Tim’s reviews on this, so you doing it on a outside pond is brill idea. It gives a true review on the Tempest. It’s a good idea to be able to remove and use for a quarantine tank and it be a mature filter. I know you will put it through it’s paces looking forward to your next video👍

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 роки тому

      Hi Andrew, thanks mate. Yes it would be possible to hose the inside on this if you wanted but you are going to kill the bacteria on the media with chlorine unless you just use pond water but then no real pressure.
      I am obsessed with cleanliness so that is something I want to experience. On Tims I know he had algae inside his which made the inside green and look dirty so I'm keen to see it on mine with no algae.
      I'm not worried about anything going back to the pond particularly because at the end of the day anything that goes back would have been in there anyway if the tempest wasn't there, plus a LOT more besides. But it would be nice if nothing did of course. I think worst case is the tempest could need a couple of flushes but we'll see 👍👍

    Nice to see another review of this. I've been watching Tim's videos on this too. I know there was a lot of people very sceptical of the Tempest when Tim first installed them, i guess a lot of people just see a tube and 7 liters of K+ and haven't considered the physics of how it works.
    Once it gets going its surprisingly effective for something so simple.
    One thing I'm watching is, when its cleaned it does leave some debris on the sides as it drains, does that sediment get back to the pond as the tempest is refilled? Not a major drama if it does as it's taking out so much crap that would otherwise have been be going back to the pond if the Tempest wasn't there.

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 роки тому

      Hi Gary, I'm not sure yet to be honest as I haven't had any in mine but its something I'm definitely looking out for to. As you say, even if half of it went back its still half as much as would have been there without it but its a good point. I saw Tims units and the stuff on the sides of his was mostly algae which could be an issue in a clear tube but we shall see.
      So far so good though, I just need my Pod to let some crap through now so I can put the Tempest to the test properly.

  • @jimwoollard8329
    @jimwoollard8329 3 роки тому +1

    Interesting.. For a named brand I think the price is probably about right. It seems to be a very similar principle to the old reverse flow gravel filters we used to use years ago. Probably a bit easier to clean though. There are some questions with it. How do you get the media out and back in if you want to change it for some reason. Do the ends unscrew (which would be ideal in my opinion)? Are they going to make different size units? Will the flow rate be impeded when it gets dirty? I will be interested to get your view on this after you've had it a while.

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 роки тому

      Hi Jim, as you say, I really need to get some time with it under my belt to answer some of your questions but regarding the media, the top black cap comes off (screwed) and there is a hole (the size of 1.5inch pressure pipe OD) through the grill to access the media. You can remove it through that. The white caps are permanently fixed and cant be removed.
      Regarding different sized units, I don't know but given these have been used on swimming pools for a long time I think probably not. In the pool industry I think they add more rather than bigger, so you could effectively use a bank of these if you need more than the single unit is able to give.

    Hi great videos! Im pump fed & I’m running an oase pressure filter into my bakki could I have a tempest in this system where would best place to put it? After the pressure filter?

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  2 роки тому

      Hi mate, I'll be brutally honest, I would ditch the pressure filter and replace it with tempest if possible. The big issue with this though will be the flow rate. The tempest needs 5000 litres an hour but a full width shower needs 3 times that flow to function properly.

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Luke, unfortunately it wouldn't. It needs to be vertical so the media favors the top. If you laid it horizontal you would get areas with little to no media and the water would track through these lower pressure channels taking the waste through with it.

      Hi mate, for the tempest you want 5000 litres per hour after head loss. It all depends on the distances and bends and things but ideal would be a 10,000 variable pump so you can dial in exactly 5000 litres.
      The shower would work less well as an alternative to the tempest as it would be getting all the solid waste thrown over it. If it was one or the other I'd go for the tempest.

    Detailed review as always, I don't really have a need for a tempest but I am quite tempted to try the K1 plus media in my nexus 300's, I've always struggled in the summers with fines but I am tempted to try the plus media in the eazy sections to see if it does a better job, I was thinking about the micro a few years back but it isn't recommended for the older models
    A lot of people say the micro worked better with fines because of it's smaller size being able to bunch up more but I've always looked at it as the gaps through the K1 are a way bigger then any gaps between pieces, I'm assuming that's why they went with the plus media instead of the micro on the tempest and that the micro is harder to agitate.

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 роки тому

      Hi Michael, I don't think you will see a benefit going from micro to K+ in terms of mechanical filtration. The micro is much smaller than the k+. The K+ has been developed with biological performance in mind , trying to improve on maturation time and protected surface area.

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 роки тому +1

      Hi mate, if its a gravity fed bottom drain you would really need to go straight to pump and then through the Tempest and then to the bead and from there back to your bio fall. You could also swap the bead and Tempest around but I'm not sure yet which would be the best way to be honest. You would need to consider the flow that the bead requires to, the tempest works up to 7,500 litres an hour.

      Hi Adam, to be brutally honest with you I'm not massively knowledgeable on bead filters. I ran one about 10 years ago on a skimmer as a polisher but that's my limit really. 😁😁

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Adam, I'm torn on this. The focus with the K+ seems to me to be on the biofilm capabilities rather than the mechanical properties. It was borne out of a project to reduce maturation time and improve bio performance from what I can tell.
      So I honestly don't know if going from K1 micro to K+ for mechanical reasons is a step forward. The micro is much smaller than the K+ so I think you are probably better sticking with what you have. The micro has a bigger surface area than the K+ to so in theory , once matured, the micro should be better at bio to.
      The K+ has the higher protected surface area but my understanding of that is that it comes in to play in a moving bed which you don't have in a bead.
      I think you should stick with what you have for now and wait for feedback from others down the line.

    Hi Darren, I was waiting for that video following Tim's video. Great opportunity to be the first customer testing it. I have gone ahead and pre ordered already as I like the concept and it can always be beneficial.
    Now I have two questions. First is for your pond, where will you put your UV now. Second is, you mentioned for pump fed, which I am, it needs to be before the pod. Any reason why it couldnt be after and use it as a polisher and for the fines? I was thinking sieve, pod, tempest on pump fed. Take care

      Hi Lau, I fitted another UV further down the line outside behind the pond. That one didn't even touch my green water so I got a better quality one and it worked a treat.
      You need to pump through the Tempest as the flow goes up through it. So it has to be pump fed basically. If your Pod is pump fed then the return back to the pond is under gravity so it wont be able to push water up through the Tempest.

    • @DazzleKoi
      @DazzleKoi  3 роки тому

      Hi Lau, you cant run it like that unfortunately. The Tempest needs to be on a pumped line. Firstly I would ask, do you have a problem with your filtration that you want to fix? If your current setup works I would stick with what you have. If you wanted to incorporate a Tempest then it could go either straight after the pump on the eazy pod line (I assume the pump is at the outlet from the Pod) or after the pump and before the sieve on the other line. Also it would do well replacing the pressure filter directly.

    Really interesting, I've watched Tim's videos about it, and I guess the takeaway has been the mechanical performance, but I guess that would be the first noticeable effect as the media needs to time to mature. Also, I'm not sure whether there's a lot biological any filter could do on top of what his filtration is already doing.
    My other takeaway has been that EA are going to have to be quite canny about price point, as it's (as has already happened online) one of the simplest filters to copy and DIY, although probably easy to miss the subtleties too. So if EA prices it too high, I think sales of clear cylindrical tubes are going to shoot up ;)

      Hi mate, that's a fair point RE the bio and to be honest its not going to be easy to show on my system either as the Pod coped well last summer. Excellent review👍 To be honest following Tim’s review there are some very negative comments from experienced Koi keepers on this product. Part of this is probably due to the size of the pond it’s fitted on at Tim’s and the replacement of a bakki shower which makes zero sense.
    Interesting your opening comments on its possible use on a QT tank and being mounted and used for a smaller pond. I think the main concern is the amount of cleaning required and what will happen in summer on a well stocked pond, most people’s view is that it won’t cope and its inefficient and time consuming to clean taking several attempts and won’t cope for example with blanketweed. Therefore realistically unless you keep it on your pond long term the review for most koi keepers isn’t that helpful, perhaps if you can keep it there long term it will prove the doubters wrong? Regarding the fines removal they are great figures but most koi hobbyist’s don’t believe them! Looking at your set up it seems perfect for that product as a long term test and fitted after an easypod. I for one would be happy to be proved wrong and would fit it on my system as a polisher bearing in mind limited bio capacity (Nexus 220/Draco drum/EA 10,000/EA 55w uv) Also wondered why you don’t just flush to waste? Presumably this is because it’s a test and you will be seems what comes out. Anyway thanks for a great review, but if you could make it a long term test stating your gallonage stocking rates etc, that would make it more relevant to hobbyists main concerns with the product 👍 James

      Hi mate, thanks for taking the time to reply, some great points. I do agree that the very best review would be with a full year under its belt so I've lived with it through all eventualities. Yes it would be straight forward to put the waste outlet to waste in my setup but I want to collect the water so I can see (and show) what comes out of there.
      A few have suggested an air addition at the bottom for cleaning but personally I think that would miss the point. The system does agitate now but its kind of controlled. It does enough to agitate the bottom regions of the media where the crap is concentrated without blasting the waste up and above the media where it will return to the pond when you put it back online. You can see the debris come away and be pulled down the waste exit as it cleans.
      Time will tell but I'm presently surprised with it so far. Ive treated for blanket weed so it should be seeing a lot more debris soon.

    £250 a pop for a nitrate factory there having a laugh. Good old EA might be ok on a Qt system but that's about it in the age of drums this is a poor way to remove fines as the power of the water pushing them against the media will break them back down removing very little in the long run. Might be ok on a system with only a few fish in and a constant trickle but on most decent stocked ponds I can't see them being up to much most of the muck stays inside even when they were double flushing them. But good luck with the review.
