I just love how this anime is the most accurate to a superhero west style anime, it's like Watchmen, Civil War and Young Justice in japanese. But they needed more time to develop everything.
Thanks for covering this series. It changed my life back when I first watched it in 2015. Between the politics, the story structure, the references, the characters, the aesthetics, the history: even the time in my life it was released. I'll be forever grateful to Mizushima-san and Aikawa-san for making it, as well as the other series they worked on together (FMA 03, Oh! Edo Rocket, Un-Go). I know folks will have their sets of criticisms for it, but there are few series that have challenged me and hit me as hard. I don't believe in scores anymore, but it's a 10 to me.
Nice review! I think the show is primarily a riff on historical references to Showa-era Japan and homages to manga characters of the 60s-70s. The “Shinka” calendar of the show tracks exactly to events of the Showa calendar. Many major fights are set at some location with historical context. To me it feels like everything else - plot, character development, sakuga, etc - were secondary devices that supported this concept. also at 10:02, in the second ED - in the background that’s a picture of the Rising Sun, representing the post-war Japanese flag, but along with the lines of the crosswalk, it hints at the wartime Imperial Flag at the same time 🤯
If I were to describe concrete revelutio in one sentence I would say it’s an extremely ambitious playground of ideas to explore every variation of superheroes in Japanese media. For the visuals I sadly can’t help but slightly disagree, while yutaka nakamura’s work on the show was nothing short of amazing I found the overall visuals of the rest of the series to be much less impressive. While I appreciate Mizushima’s directing here I couldn’t help but feel like he was out of his element here with the flatter pop art aesthetic, and I feel like he has really ironed out his style for shows with greater realism to their aesthetic like dai guard, gundam 00, oh edo rocket, and of course FMA 03. I think the differences in our perceptions though stem more from the fact that I was going into the series initially from the perspective of a sakuga junky after seeing some of nakamura’s scenes and was expecting another Space Dandy, Mob Psycho or One PunchMan so I had simply set myself up for disappointment. Also surprised you didn’t put more emphasis on Shō Aikawa the head writer of both Con Revo and FMA03 which was what ultimately became the main appeal of the show for me. He made the original concept for con revo, and I’m pretty sure mizushima said Aikawa had the biggest hand in 03’s production. I disagree on the love triangle thing it definitely felt more like he left due to everything Claude brought to light and Jirou frequently criticizes the bureau, but ultimately his goal is protecting super humans which will align him with bureau in numerous disasters. I definitely felt like after the Claude incident there was no way Jirou would return to work under the bureau given how idealistic he was. I’d be interested in more reviews of mizushima’s stuff specifically the 3 I mentioned (and the movie he did with Gen Urobuchi which I haven’t seen yet) and Aikawa’s stuff specifically I have his adaptation of the 12 kingdoms and his anime original ghost slayers ayashi on my to watch list.
Yeah. For the love triangle point, I thought it was much more lenient on it in my rewatch because there there was enough genuine conflict and the bureau was shown to have ideological disagreements. I just personally wish there was a bit more. But I think that was partly due to my own expectations going in. It's mal description at least made me think I was going to get a story like that and I did, just not to the extent I was hoping.
Honestly with that low triangle thing I couldn't stand that Fox lady so he was just a b****. Or maybe I need to watch this show again to get a better understanding of her.
One thing I hated about this show is that Claude was objectively *in the right* He was RIGHT and JUSTIFIED to destroy that submarine, he was RIGHT, less justified this time, but still understandable that he chose to get revenge on the nurses and the doctors that part took in the inhumane experiments, over all, he was the only character that didn't look at justice as a binary matter, it's not a one or a zero, he was right to retort to violence for these inhumane things done to him and children Yet the show still treated him as a villain that deserved to be taken down, which was so weird I think they were trying to go for an anti hero archetype, the guy that has good intentions but does bad things for the greater good; they failed miserably if that's what they were going for, they made a sympathetic villain that was right in all ways but still the show had to rug pull us at the last second and make him crazy because they accidentally made him into a better main character than Jiro
I watched this anime when it was releasing i ended up giving it a 6/10 score and i can't remember it that well will i re-watch someday maybe but it's not too high that i will studio Bones is a interesting studio but i feel very mixed on the series they produced Fullmetal Alchemist a 10/10 Soul Eater a 7/10 My Hero Academia a 5/10 Snow White with the Red Hair a 8/10 Mob Psycho 100 a 7/10 Bungou Stray Dogs a 5/10 it feels like all they do now is My Hero Academia i get it it's a popular series i don't get why it is so popular it feels different from other animation studios like J.C Staff there is a consistency of them making good or great anime throughout the years while Bones feels like they take forever to make another good anime or great anime when all we get is basically My Hero Academia
I completely understand why you'd give concrete revolutio a 6. If you watched it again, you'd probably feel the same. It is incredibly messy in a lot of areas. It's just that I can forgive a lot if its flaws because I love the cast and how effectively it does the stuff it's good at

Shiba Raito is sooo cool
