- Can't Come Down by the Grateful Dead. Recorded on November 3, 1965 at Golden Gate Studios.
Information about the video: I edited it some, but the original is from Archive.org. This was the description there... "Hippie Marbling: An art form rooted in the 1960's and a look at one of its eccentric pioneers. Read article with stills here: noendpress.com/caleb/marbling/" and "5 minute video of Cove creating large format marbled fabrics in Berkeley, CA during the early 1970s using the roof of a VW bus." If you like, you can watch the original here: www.archive.org/details/Calebj...
Enjoy!
Bill Graham once told the crowd at Winterland one time; "YOU GOTTA KNOW WHEN TO DROP"
Reminds me of Dylan's subterranean homesick blues. The paint technique is called marbling:)
Brian Schultz original form of tie dye invented by ken kesey and the mary pranksters on their epic cross country trip to the ny worlds fair. the warlocks, later the grateful dead became the pranksters house band.
Great old acid test era ditty.
It reminds me of the Rolling Stones in the 60s , with Brian Jones...
i just realized i'm watching this the same day it was recorded 51 years ago
Happy 50th for us Dead Heads.

Nope, when they made this they had I believe just started calling themselves the Grateful Dead, this was made in '65, along with Mindbender and The Only Time Is Now.
Was this song recorded both under The Warlocks and The Dead? I've seen it labeled as both before. I know sometime in 1965 is when they became the Dead
Asbestos boots on flaming feet!!
this is the version from 'Birth of the Dead'. Any1 know if this is their only live recording of this song?
Weren't they still called the Warlocks when this was released?
Seems kinda different to see a skinny Jerry Garcia :-)
Action painting is more like Jackson Pollock.
This sounds like the Velvet Underground not the Dead !
+4runner39 I can not find any record of it from the velvet
Fun fact: Both the Dead and VU were originally called the Warlocks
funny, the grateful dead and the velvet underground are my 2 favorite bands i can listen to whenever...and syd barrett era floyd too.
Secrete smile like a cheshire cat.
What harmonica key is this ?
Who is singing,I hear Bobby on the chorus
What kind of painting is that called?
I want to know as well....beautiful though!
Matthew Adkins marbling

FAH Q it would be cool to have there cd's as the jug champions but damn there expensive haha
Oh my goodness, I thought you were being a bit pedantic with your original comment. Lol
Is this type of painting referred to as an "action painting?"

man, they lost so much when pig died
lower intenstines....on a giant sheet of cloth!
I love how much Phil's voice breaks through in those early days. Friggan Donna had to come aboard to take over the high singing. Not cool donna, not cool.
Well, it was partly cause Phil blew out his vocal chords...so, there's that.
its plain to see
