Sweet alyssum is a super important plant in organic pest management in vegetable crops. That’s the real reason Serina loves it, it’s all about the veggies!
I just found you as I was scrolling trying to find flower growing tips. And you are just up the road as I’m just south of penticton!! LOL!! Which is great because now I have someone to follow and learn from that has the same weather issues 😂 If I lived closer I’d volunteer old lady labour just to learn. Great job on the videos 🌼🌸🌺!!
Where do I start in stating how glad I am in finding this channel. It started with "Best grow lights for your money". Best! explanation of growing with lights and straight forward on the how, why, cost, and results. The video helped me understand my options for my needs and budget. Then going to the channel, watching this video I'm hooked. I believe I can learn and that is what I need from a video. Thank you.
Any time I mention magnolia trees growing in Canada, there's this gasp of disbelief. 😀 I love the magnolia trees with a soft almost sweet scent. I have 2 varieties of lavender, they brighten my day. For the bees, bergamot. It's part of Earl Grey tea as well as a flavouring. This year I was surprised to see ranunculus return. I understood it to be annual, but it's back. 😃 Now to try getting some herb seeds growing, or at least sprouted. Some can take up to 3 months to germinate. I found some yellow allyssum seeds, going to start those soon too.
Btw I’m so glad you did this video, I am in love with the sea holly flower, had it in an arrangement but had no idea what it was called. I just ordered the seeds! TY!
Love love your alls family farm!! I'm a new gardener and I'm planting a cut flower garden for the 1st time this year! Your the reason! I've been watching everyday to catch up on your channel and loving it! Please show us "how to" harvest the flower more. Great farm!! All the love Betty Jo from Shepherdsville kentucky!!! Go Cats!!!
I started LMAO when you said that your mom had a stipulation in the sale of the house to dig up her favorite plants....I did the same thing 😂 😂 😂. My favorite flower is oriental lily. Stargazer is top then Casa Blanca for me. I love colors that are dark and rich with pops of pastels to lift them up, textures and various greens round out my perfect beds. Everyone who has ever visited my garden always said it felt peaceful. God bless y'all
My BIL spent like 3k on a tree when he was drunk (before he was my BIL) and then they sold the contract said he could take the tree, but by that point the tree had been growing for 5ish years and it would have cost way more than 3k to dig it up.
I like seeing the difference in y'alls opinions on design. It would be a fun video to see what each of your favorites are in different categories of specific flowers. 😀-Cara
Lushness. Structure. Scent. That's it. I am with Serina 👍🌺❤️🇲🇾 Ian. Blue. You would love our Bunga Telang - Butterfly Pea - think lapis lazuli blue. And it's edible too!
Hands down, your channel continues to be one of my faves. Love the creativity, authenticity, how you work together, the sounds of the pruners clipping flowers, etc. Thanks for sharing your life with us! ❤️🎉❤️
Sooo...all your plants between the both of you fit a cottage style garden just fine. 100% of those plants you mentioned are found in many cottage style gardens.
This is such a fun video to watch! I am team Serina regarding the general design idea - I am more drawn in by structure than by focal flowers and color. But I loved the flowers Ian mentioned in the end and I too hate strong scents but love polinator friendly flowers. So a mix of both in the end. And you are couples goals in the way you except and celebrate your differences and your shared nerdyness.
A good reminder to enjoy the scent of Sweet Alyssum again. It's also a great pollinator plant for important beneficials in the vegetable garden. Have you tried direct sowing the seeds? Time to bring back Bachelor Buttons too!
I agree with Ian - the birds, bees and various creatures inhabiting my garden are just as important to my enjoyment as the plants. I also dearly love my tulip magnolia and engage in an annual tulip magnolia tour of my area when they are in bloom like Serena. Lovely to hear both points of view.
We laughed while making this because Ian couldn't believe I hadn't planted a tulip magnolia yet, lol. I have a spot scoped out though, just need to get all the water better organized
This was such a fun topic- loved watching you two describe your favorite flowers and reasons why, and contrasting with each other! More like this, please?
i like this video i think because i dreaming about my future garden too. Serina i like your idea of levels of plants but colors more speak to me from Ian (but magnolia is must have)
‘Not very many, I bought 100’ 😂. You speak my language hahaha. Serena last year you grew an amazing Sea Holly, can you please please please tell me the variety of it. One thing I cannot do without in my garden is Verbena Bonariensis.
Kelowna used star magnolias as a landscaping plant in the 90s, so there are a lot of beautiful large shrubs all around the city that bloom in early spring, and I love it
I'm I the only one that raised an eyebrow when Serina said " I grew 300.000 flowers" and thought straight away "so how many did Ian grow"?? I always thought there was no I in team ;-)
I made this mistake of trying to divide my hellebore last year. Before that it would be in flower literally all winter long starting in December. This winter they barely had a leaf on each one much less having flowers too. We shall see if they survive and thrive again. Ohio 6a I don’t really care for hosta leaves. However, I smile at how the bumbles cover themselves in pollen when they visit the hosta flowers. Bees are fun to watch.
My helleborus are blooming the best they have in years. Last year, they were pitiful, frozen out. I'm in Zone 6 b, Southwest Missouri. I first planted a few over 35 years ago. Now they are everywhere. I take the seed and spread them. They will come up now & again.
Love how you two get along and yet are so different. People ask my hubby and I how we've been married over 40 years but are so different. Our gardens would look very different as well and he would call everything a "posy".
Weird is good wouldn’t have it any other way. I had to put alyssum on my shopping cart,I remember having it in my garden when I was a child hopefully it will bring back some fond memories
Love your videos! Can you leave the flower pictures up on the screen longer. I show your videos to my mom. She can barely see and she loves flowers. She loves your beautiful flowers so if they are on screen longer versus talking that would be amazing. Yeah how about a video all flowers nothing but 🌸 flowers. Just an idea😊. Thanks for sharing.
Ian looks at Serena so lovingly ! What a sweet, natural couple you are ! What is that grass you grow with the beautiful wide leaves ? Don't I deserve to know after giving you such a nice compliment ?
I am team flowers but started veggies intensely last year. Next year no veggies cuz preping this raised beds costs more than getting them at the health food store lol

From North Idaho zone 6a 🌻 ❤️ 🌿
I just came home from shopping. spring is here. I am trying to find a spot for some black lilies and some white flowers from corms. I like some dahlias but I have never managed to overwinter them. I like to do an imagenary show garden. a 5m by 5m plot where the sky is the limit.
1st North American / Canadian pronounce Dalias USA say dAAALIAS. Intresting how we pronounce things differently. Makes the world go around My love is flowers. My saying is: when I die NO FLOWERS, give them to me now😅
They said in another video that they dig them up; I assume they're composted. Because they cut off all the foliage, there's no plant left to "feed" the bulb, so they wouldn't rebloom. Plus I heard another grower say it increases the risk of tulip fire if they leave them in the soil, (I think it's a fungus), which would mean you can't grow tulips in that soil for 8 years. (That video helped me diagnose tulip fire in my garden in BC.)
I'm with Ian's list, except I agree with Serina about shape in the landscaping. I like the idea about smells in the garden, but I only like the smell of things that smell like food/herbs. I am so excited to go to nurseries this time of year, but I often hold my breath through parts. Too smelly.
