    Thank you for doing a WARM CLIMATE chicken coop video! There are TONS of housing reviews and advice on how to raise chickens in cold weather, but not many on raising them in the Southern USA. Thanks!

    This was very informative. I’m hoping to start my flock in a few years, have to get the property first, but I’ve been studying up. It looks like this will be the best coop for me to start with.

    Thank you for this video & review. I was looking at the same one on the Tractor Supply website and hoped someone would have better pics. This was very helpful. And you are right about the 8 birds -- I don't see how it would be possible either. Fortunately I only have 4 and this coop would be perfect for them. :)

    Great video, I was looking at buying one for 2 special chickens I have. I have a coop and run for 15 but One of my polish came down with an eye infection, now that she is better but she lost sight out of that eye, the other chickens peck on her so she needs a separate pen. I also raised one special girl from a biddy when she had sprayed legs and now that she is so humanized she needs extra care. This was perfect. By watching this, i ordered it online to pick up later. Great tips also never thought of water proofing some parts.

      Thank goodness for your selfless heart. If I had more time (and money!) I would totally do chicken rehab. I love it when people do extra work and put it more effort to help animals who need special care, or who would have otherwise been put down. I have a Coop Hacks video, and a One Year Later video, to help give you more ideas! But for the price and convenience of not building from scratch, this coop really has been a great buy. Let me know how your feather babies are doing!

    This video was very helpful! I also have this coop and we used to have four chickens. Sadly two of them died but now we have five! The coop is too small because our original two chickens are very territorial and mean so we are looking for a bigger coop! But it’s a nice coop for having three chickens like you! ❤️🐔

    I'm so glad I found your channel :) I have been looking at a few different coops but your review helped me make the decision to get this same coop to hold 2 chickens hopefully in the near future. I noticed there isn't a door at the top of the ramp to secure the chickens in the nesting area at night and that was the one thing that was holding me back, but I found out that Innovation Pet sells a sliding door add-on for this coop for only $10 online! I will definitely predator-proof the perimeter, but I was worried about leaving that door open 24/7 especially on rainy days. Anyway, thanks for your video. I love your chickens!! You're making me want to get 3 instead of 2.

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  6 років тому +2

      Well hi there :) I’m happy you found me too! I never felt the need to bar up that little door though initially I did have the same thoughts. Didn’t know IP made a door for it so that’s cool! The only thing to consider too is which way that little doorway will be facing (don’t want the north wind going up there). And yes please do get three! The more the merrier :)

    • @joannee365
      @joannee365 6 років тому +3

      Now that I think of it, I kind of like the idea of leaving it open so I won't have to wake up too early to let them out every morning. Lol. They're just going to have to wait until I wake up to be able to free-range the side yard though ;)... and I will most likely get 3 of them because 3 is a good number :D

    AWESOME chicks! I found your video while doing a review on my own coop. Great work and let us know how your chicks grow! Agree no way are 8-10 birds living in there. ah ha! You're complaints were the same as mine - whats with that stupid lock!? wait... Im supposed to 'seal it' really! I thought the wood felt 'cheap' and here in FLA the sun kills outside things fast; this was a great suggestion to add to your info! It never crossed my mind! New sub gained :-)

    Hi Sarah, I'm so happy I found your channel. I'm a brand new chicken Mama and I also live in NE San Antonio so I've been loving all the videos about how to take care of chickens in this hot and humid San Antonio weather. The video about which plants and shrubs your chickens tend to leave alone was also super helpful for me as I have most of the plants and shrubs you mentioned. This weekend I'm going to buy the Cumberland Coop from Tractor Supply. It's looks like it's basically the same coop you have in this video with a few modifications. After watching some of your newer videos I see you have a new coop now. Would you still recommend the coop you reviewed in this video?

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  4 роки тому +3

      Hi neighbor! I’m so happy you’re here too! I do recommend my coop if you do things like seal the wood and upgrade the roost bars inside. And it depends on how many chickens you’re going to get. I wouldn’t have more than 4-5 sleep in there (and of course they need more space to run around during the day!).

    I got one, but I didn't like it for my adult birds at all. Especially the roost bars on the inside as they are too low to the litter tray in my opinion. I do, however, use it to raise chicks in so they aren't in the house. I got this heating pad that I place in the nest boxes and have the food and water in the litter tray as it is much easier to clean than than the nest boxes. I keep all the windows and doors closed (mine has an actual window on the side door so sunlight gets through). Then, once they start to feather out I give them access to the run and open the window/vents during the day. I also have it in my larger coop's run so they can see each other without the adults picking on the chicks. Though, for those only starting out with a few birds (I have 12), this would be a great starter coop.

    We have had this coop for 5 years. We put it flat on the ground and no rodents etc. This year racoons got in another run. Hopefully will not try this. All the window slides fell out pretty soon. The wood that holds up the perches needs replaced or reinforced, that broke eventually. It definately needs more paint or sealed as water makes it swell and doors swell tight sometimes. It dries out quick though or use another door. Sotting on the ground I did this year have to reinforce my hardware cloth at the bottom, it came apart there from rust or chickens scratching stuff up on it. 6 chickens is definately full. 4 chickens and a rooster is probably capacity. Oh, we have 2 of these, one the ladder fell apart after 3 or 4 years. But I would but it again, I would seal it against moisture getting in the wood sonit doesn't warp. Some slats warp and come out. We raised one clutch with a mom last summer in one, it aas great. But she had 3 roosters and one hen. We ended up taking her and the hen out. 3 roosters trashed it. It is an open concept coop on the inside now with the tray reinforced so it doesn't fall down. Now I have 2 ducks in it, they don't go up top, I store straw there for them. I would say 5 years is the life limit with repairs but it is a good design and worth it.

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  Рік тому +1

      Thank you so much for this! You’re right, sealing it yearly will definitely extend the life of it. I’ll want to repaint it for aesthetics in the spring I think, but we are on year 2.5 I think and no major warping or issues. ✌🏼❤️🐓

      Hi! I showed the can in the first Omaha coop review video. It’s a paintable/sprayable sealant but I don’t remember the brand. So you can brush it on or put it in a sprayer. Just look for protection against wood warping, water, the elements, mystical beasts, etc. and whatever you get should be fine!

    Thank you for this video. I'm less concerned about the number of birds a product says it could house and more concerned about how well built it is, so it was helpful to see that it's a well-built coop. Given it has three nesting boxes, it looks like this would be good for three chickens, would you say so?

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  3 роки тому +3

      Oh yes! Chickens actually prefer to share one nesting box anyway so I would not worry about the number of boxes, focus on the amount of rush space and make sure you have enough parking space for each fluffy butt!

Do you remember exactly which wood / weather sealer you used and if you are happy with it? As far is this kit goes compared to others, my local chicken forum was just talking about how great this little set up is.
      And I recently published another video titled “one year later“ which shows the additional complaints and warnings that I have about the coop. But honestly, for the money, and the convenience of not having to buy or build from scratch, I think it is fantastic!

      Hi! If you look at my “coop design“ playlist, you will see the series of videos I did when we were still new to chickens. We did used to let them free range in the entire backyard but you are exactly right, you cannot control where they poop if you let them out everywhere and they poop constantly! We got really sick of worrying about the germs and mess, and spraying everything down, so we do have the chickens now in their own dedicated space. The videos are called “lock them up“ and it was about us making that decision.

    Very cool. I'm interested in doing the same. Do you let them out all day with the door open, or do you keep them in enclosed? I was looking at Silkies. I'm trying to figure out how much space they need to be comfortable and happy. I have a small urban yard.

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  5 років тому

      Hi! I wouldn’t keep more than maybe one or two bird enclosed. Really, most chickens should have 10 square feet each. Silkies might need a little less but if possible I’d give them a yard for sure!

    • @lf2334
      @lf2334 5 років тому

      @@realsimplemama You don't think that would be a bit small? If I understand square footage correctly, you would simply take the length times the width to give you the square footage. The space I have is 15 feet by 15 feet including the coop in that space. That would be 225 square feet? That means 10 square feet would be a space that's 2 feet by 5 feet. That seems like a small area for an animal to live it's whole life. I don't say this to be rude or combative, I'm just curious. I don't want to take this on if I'm not doing the right thing for the birds.

    • @realsimplemama

      That’s the bare minimum and doesn’t take into account fresh foraging like grass. I think that’s meant to be for them to not become obese from not having room to scratch and just do chicken stuff. And that’s just the minimum too of course. :) Thanks for being so respectful.

      Hi! I actually had this coop for almost 2 years and only sold it because I moved and the new place had a gigantic built in coop already there. I do agree with sealing it - and you need to repeat that once a year - and it also would not be a bad idea to have the coop up on pavers so that the wood itself does not ever touch the ground. You can check out my “coupe hacks“ video to get more ideas about upgrading locks or other materials, but for my little family the time and effort it would have taken to custom build a coop would have just been too much for us. What I do not like is that the roosting bars sit near to the ground even with the nesting boxes. Chickens tend to go to the highest point to roost. If the roofing bars are even with the nesting boxes, the birds will tend to sleep in the nesting boxes. I found this to be true of the prefab coop that I bought. Luckily, I was able to install one roosting bar even with the top of the nesting boxes. With one week of training the hens that the roosting bar was where they needed to be at night, they are finally getting there on their own without me having to block off the nesting boxes.

      Hi! I think there’s enough roosting space for them. I don’t think it would be sufficient for them to live in 24/7. So if you have a larger run for them (or if you can let them free range) then it should be fine! I hope that makes sense.

      Morgan Soucy- You can’t let quail free range, and they don’t roost to sleep like chickens. It would be absolutely perfect for 4 quail. Honestly, you could fit around 10-15 quail in that coop. I raise bobwhites, chickens, pigeons, pheasants, and ducks. I have a video about bobwhites on my channel. I use a coop like this for my grow out pen for my birds.

    I picked up two of them, one for 130, the other for 100 because the box was damaged, I agree it's a bit small for 8 birds but in the north east 8 birds will be warmer in the cold wether.

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  5 років тому +1

      That’s a great deal on the price! And lots of options for customization - I would plan to build them a small yard (maybe between the two to save on supplies) just so they have enough space to stretch their legs. Congratulations!

    Does it have chicken wire on the bottom so predators cannot get in?

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  6 років тому

      Hi! There is hardware cloth throughout the open spaces. At the bottom you have the wood base that goes along the ground and that’s it. So if you wanted to make a dig-proof predator guard (which I recommend) you’d have to do that separately.

      Yes and no. It’s small but it could work. But also please remember that they’ll eat all the grass within a day or so, so maybe consider putting the coop on casters or wheels so you can move it around? And also building them a small pen so they can go on field trips!

    I order this same coop, but the one size up. The one I ordered is 109"x60x60. I have 8 birds ( they are almost 5 weeks old ) I still am not sure the sex of each one. So I may end up with 6 total. I live on one acre, although still considered urban town living. Were only allowed 6 hens and no roosters.
    How only were yours when you were able to sex them?

      Hi! It depends on the bird but usually it’ll be 14+ weeks, as their saddle feathers grow in and you can really see the comb (and they start trying to crow which is hilarious). Maybe start looking around locally for where you could potentially take roos, just in case. Let me know how it’s going!

      Yay! Yes she’s gorgeous and sassy. I’ve had two and I’ll tell you truly, they’re beautiful and talkative and funny. They have been the breed who seems to get heaviest (usual health concerns especially in the heat), and they aren’t the best layers. I have not had chickens more than three years and have not had hundreds of course, but those are the things I have noticed with both of the ones that I have owned. But they are funny and beautiful and love to talk! Great personalities but not the hardiest at least in hot Texas.

      You know, I bet it would be a good idea for me to do some videos about the observations I have noticed with each of the breeds, to help people if they do what you did and see your chicken they think is pretty and want to see if it would be good for their flock! And if you really want to go down the rabbit hole, start looking up pictures of the various kinds of Wyandotte. The red laced and some of the others are absolutely gorgeous!

    I would buy wire when buying coops because no animals can dig under so I would get wire and tie it around your coop under it and no animals could dig under because there is wire. Also at tractor supply it must be a thing for 8 because we bought one and they said eight but there is no way

      Hi! For the sealant? You find any outdoor water sealant and apply it to the exterior coop parts and let dry. 👍🏼 doesn’t matter which type/brand you use as long as it’s for outdoor wood. Apply once a year!
