    852 people lost their lives when M/S Estonia Sank in the baltic sea 28/9 1994.
    One of them was the Swedish Musician Pierre Isacsson, his songs can be found on youtube today, (he was also in a few theathres).
    He was also one of the singers in family four who made it to eurovision in 1971 with the song Vita Vidder.
    He helped many people get to safety before he lost his own life in the disaster.
    He left behind a 9 year old son and his wife.
    He was a Hero, May he rest in peace, as well as the other 851 souls who never came home.

    The MS Estonia was a ferry carrying cars and passengers. Her bow could be opened up to load cars into it. When she started her voyage out into the sea, she was rocking and slamming the waves. Her bow had been rising up and down damaging the gate/door on her bow. The intense damage made bolts and screws fly off. The crew members at her bridge couldn’t see that the door had been clinging on too just a few bolts. They could only see with sensors. The sensors detected the door was closed, so they didn’t worry about it. The door finally popped off and she began to flood. She was already listing so this made it worse. The crew sensed distress signals, and she started to list, and list, and she capsized. 18 or 19 ships had responded with a lot of rescue helicopters too. It was difficult to find her, and her survivors so not many survived. Most drowned, or experienced hypothermia while waiting to be rescued.
    This is the information I could remember from studying about naval history, please correct me if I said anything wrong.

    • @badethics7542

      IIRC she entered a resonance due to the free surface effect on the vehicle deck due to the bow breakage, like a pendulum in reverse, until she went too far over.

      @@TheKweenII_09 Silja Europa was first to receive the mayday call, and they were coordinating the rest of ships that responded to radio traffic call. MS Mariella was the first to get to the location.

    • @AJ1987LV
      @AJ1987LV Рік тому +1

      Mariella and Silja Europa arrived first on site, but they couldn't do much due to bad weather. They deployed their own life rafts in hopes that people would get into them, but the waves were too high to do any actual rescue job until helicopters arrived.
      As for the reasons of sinking, yes, that was official version, but the expeditions afterwards found evidence that there is damage in wreck side, large hole that has bent metal from inside out, so it can't be caused by crashing into seabed. Also, the government bs about "gravesite" and prohibition to dive down to wreck - even though they initially promised to recover the wreck and bodies (which they could've done easily, there were even some private companies that offered to do that, if government wouldn't have enough funds for such recovery operation) - it's hardly conspiracy theory when some facts are way too obvious.
      I'm Latvian myself, and people from our country were also among both perished and survivors. I remember watching the tv news special broadcast in next day when they announced about this tragedy. Ever since, there are questions that have not been answered. Hopefully with the re-opened investigation, some clarity will come, and families of perished ones will finally get some closure.

      The ship was in very good condition 1994 so they said first. Then somehow they changed mind by some "mafia" instance. Waves were not the reason for sinking. Maybe many more people understand this now. French court said that the reason for sinking is a whole, Swedish lost money on this as well millions of euros have been now lost for sea watching 24h.

      She were built for the cruise between Stockholm and Turku. The time table was very tight, so they had to be able of driving all the vehicles trough the ferry. This is why she had a special permit allowing her to traffic only where the nearest land was half the distance between Stockholm and Åland. This was later forgotten and both Estonia and her sister boat suffered damage on the bow visor. Other boats have stronger and safer constructions and a lot of boats that travel open seas has the opening in the rear only. So the trucks have to reverse on to the boat, which takes more time.

    The Estonia had a car deck with a flap at the front of the ship that could be opened and a ramp to come down to allow cars in or out of the car deck. When the Estonia experienced the bad weather it did, the door came loose, and water started pouring in the car deck because of the crashing waves. Even worse, the bow couldn't be seen from where the bridge is located. You find this on cargo ships too. Especially large ones like the Evergiven. You can see that on the Evergiven and other ships, the containers are loaded in a way that the stack gets lower as it goes further to the bow. This helps with visibility. So the Estonia really had no chance of surviving. It's just mother nature.

      @@GuuppariV2 This just further reiterates my point. Once your intellect informs you that the ship is compromised in someway then you need to go up. Immediately. It will feel like you have plenty of time when you really don't at all. Its the same with the incorrect advice at Grenfell, the advice that was given was unforgivable, regardless I don't believe that I would have stayed put after being aware that the building was compromised. If i lived high up in a highrise I would keep a base chute in the cupboard in the hope i would never need to use it.

      Carto Carto I completely get what you are saying and agree that you should trust your gut feeling. I truly hope to never be put in this horrible kind of situation in my life.

    • @Make_Boxing_Great_Again
      @Make_Boxing_Great_Again 3 роки тому

      @@GuuppariV2 I don't doubt for a second that it was a horrible experience and that its easier to apprise actions from the safety of ones home after the fact than to live the emergency in real time. I just wanted to make a general point that people should be wary yet rational about their surroundings and also to sometimes defy authority or instructions when the by the book approach is clearly not appropriate. Copious amounts of health and safety legislation can make people loose their common sense, giving people a false sense of security. Also, official advise for the initial stages of a disaster is advise that has been devised to combat the average plausible disaster. But of course there is no such thing as an average disaster, they are unique in nature. If a disaster has already occurred then the inconceivable has already occurred. If i'm on a plane that is hijacked by jihads then one way or another I would attempt an organised killing of the assailants. A 50% chance of living is better than a 100% chance of death. From united 93 we have learnt the importance of this and in particular the importance of aquiring control on the aircraft ASAP: They needed to assign at least 3 men to tackle the terrorist at the controls, one for each arm and one to take out the terrorist and control the yoke.

    This isnt how the Estonia sunk. The official version isnt true. The ship wouldnt have sunk that fast if the car deck would have been flooded because underneath the car deck there has been more decks and people who survived heard a loud bang and water came into their cabins. There was still a lot of air in the lower decks and the ship would have only turned around 180° but never sunk within 30mins because there was still a lot of air in there, simple physics. A video from a German journalist who investigated the ship with divers shows that there is a big hole in the hull on the starboard side which probably was caused by an explosion. So the air in the lower decks could escape and that caused the fast sinking of the ship.
