When I started out in astrophotography I really struggled to remove background gradients from my images without completely black clipping the background. Then I came across this technique somewhere, and it made a world of difference, especially when imaging with light pollution filters.
I've been wanting to do this video for a while, so when a friend on Instagram suggested it, I decided the time was right to have a go.

I didn't know the gradient feature and it really solves several problems I had when extracting the background. Thanks a lot!
You're super welcome, I would have learned this technique from someone else, and it certainly helped me so I'm happy to share it around to make life easier for others :)
Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing and the good demonstration. I'm going to go back and reprocess some of my images with these techniques. I think even after doing light pollution removal and background calibration in Astro Pixel Processor, I can get some further improvements with this method.
Glad it's helpful. Sometimes it can be tricky using the gradient tool, not to remove some of the colour you actually want to keep. A bit of trial and error usually gets you there 👍
Great Tutorial!! I actually Use Gimp Software because its Free! Fantastic Indeed! Now I just Needed To Know About Dynamic background extraction. Thanks For This Vid!👍🏻
If it works, it works 😀👍
Biggest Thaks bro!!!
Thank you for this tutorial. As far as the gradient tool: clicking the foreground and background with the color picker tool---what distinguishes the "foreground" and "background"? You selected an area from the top and bottom of the image. Thank you.
As long as you remember which edge of the image you designated "foreground" etc, then it doesn't really matter ✌️ as long as you click on the colours you want to remove. So for example, selecting a colour from a red star will result in some red stars being removed...
@@undersouthernskies519 ...thank you very much.
Nice one!++ Thank you :)
Thank you!
Thank You! Been trying to figure out how to do that!
You're welcome Rod, happy to help ✌
I've also recently come across a "Dehaze" filter in RawTherapee which also works well.
@@undersouthernskies519 I’ll have to check that out. Right now I’m itching to go redo my M33 and several others. because I know this will improve them a lot.
@@MrDirtyRod RawTherapee is a freeware Lightroom analogue, great for lens corrections and batch preprocessing of subs for timelapse and so on.
@@undersouthernskies519 thx. I will look that up. Busy reprocessing all my stuff using what you taught me. Complete upgrade to the Horsehead I just finished. Definitely subscribing for more tips!
great video, can you make one tutorial on HDR moon with GIMP
