  • Napoleon Bonapart, One of the greatest conquers the world has ever seen. Shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Julius Caesar and Ghengis Khan. He took france from a nation tearing at the seems, teetering on total collapse, to the master of Europe. An entire continent under his heel. But he would stumble, and his mastery over Europe would come to a sudden and complete end. But what if, in an alternative timeline, napoleon never fell, and maintain himself as the hegemon of continental Europe.

So for the rest of the 19th Century, we'd see France remain as the strongest single continental country. This version of France with its "natural borders" of the Rhine, would have acccess to all the coal and iron ore of that region, and have a very solid basis for industrialisation. Without Napoleon's disastrous Spanish and Russian invasions, this version of France would have a better demography. I can well imagine this France economically surpassing Britain by the 20th Century.
I don't see Germany being united in this timeline, especially not by a triumphiant Prussia proclaiming it in Versailles. I reckon though that Austria will get its Illyrian provinces back when France is distracted with Italy, and Austria supporting Italian unification (aka the Italian Republic taking Piedmont from France), just like France supported Italy taking Veneto from Austria in our timeline.

Probably the best continuation here, with a stronger france and no unified germany I don't see the scramble for africa or ww1 happening. More like a century of coldwar and border disputes along ethno-linguistic lines.

8:31, but the french empire already was a constitutional monarchy. In such a case only a sequence of ammendments would be needed.

You forgot the rise of Bonapartism in the latter part of the 19th century and the coming to power of Napoleon III,who would inherit a much powerful France with a less powerful unified Prussia, the future long term would look much brighter than you think,if you ask me.

    • @ComradeTomcat
      @ComradeTomcat 5 місяців тому

The rise of bonapartism in France was really driven by the sheer incompetence and inability of the governments that followed Napolean. So if the House of Bonaparte keeps the throne in this timeline, than they would probably experience their own second republic revolution eventually. It depends on how well the House of Bonaparte does in running the country.

I fully agree that Napoleon and his descendants couldn't ever keep the Continental System intact as Russia is just too much of a issue, but I do think that they could easily keep what they held of Europe in check, even Spain could be taken if Napoleon successfully manages to convince the British and Russians to tolerate French hegemony over Europe, and that's the issue. Also, the French government would be VERY popular because of all the military victories and reforms even despite it's dictatorial practices, so turmoil at home wouldn't be a issue, even his puppet regimes would be tolerated. A good scenario would be "What if by 1812 Napoleon had secured mainland Europe and convinced Britain and Russia to tolerate his hegemony"

  • @motivationallizard6644

I think there are a few issues here. Any departure from the continental system would need to take place before the 4th coalition in 1806. Napoleon began establishing the system after defeating the Austrians and Russians in the 3rd coalition in 1805, so assuming Napoleon doesn’t outright mandate a European wide embargo he would still absolutely enact a trade war with Britain.
Napoleon would still presumably smash Prussia at Jena-Auerstedt and defeat Russia much in the same way he did at Friedland.
Napoleon would probably negotiate a similar peace deal as he did in our Tilsit, but with two big differences: no duchy of Warsaw, and no kingdom of Westphalia. Napoleon would cede Warsaw to Russia as a sign of friendship and place a local German, such as the king of Saxony or a Republican politician in charge of the confederation of the Rhine and his new republic of Westphalia.
I’m one stroke Napoleon gets two stable Allies while resolving many of the border issues that caused him to invade Russia.
I’d assume something similar would happen in Spain as Joseph proved to be a relatively poor ruler in Naples by being unable to put down revolts in Calabria. Consequently, Napoleon’s intervention in 1809 would see him take prince Ferdinand’s side while removing the unpopular king and prime minister. Napoleon would still invade Portugal, as they would still not subscribe to his dumbed down continental system, and as a consequence we can still expect minor rebellions in Spain from French men under marshal Soult and Ney moving to attack Portugal; although these revolts would be much smaller than those in the actual peninsular war.
Napoleon would still need to defend against Austria again in the 5th coalition, and we would still see a battle like Aspern-Essling where he is initially defeated by the reformed Austrian army under Archduke Charles, before counterattacking at a parallel battle of Wagram. Relatively similar peace terms are made and Napoleon would remarry to Marie Louise.
Napoleon would’ve had all of Europe directly allied to him or under his thumb, and depending on the invasion of Portugal he likely would have an empire stretching from Lisbon to Konigsberg. Napoleon II would grow up tutored by Napoleon himself, who would now live much longer without the stress of losing his empire or his poison episode that likely contributed to his stomach issues. I can see Napoleon the Second inheriting the empire somewhere in the late 1820’s or early 1830’s where he would have to deal with inside threats like Talleyrand and Fouche attempting to subvert him, while Britain remains openly hostile under Lord Castlereagh.
Napoleon likely would’ve secured a marriage of his son to one of Tsar Alexander’s relatives to maintain their alliance, along with Napoleon the Second being the nephew of emperor Francis. Flashpoints for conflict would be Germany which could rebel much like it did in our own timeline around 1848, Italy with the pope and Joseph stirring up their own trouble, and Spain with Ferdinand still being relatively incompetent.

I believe that Napoleon could have made a cost-benefit analysis about the Iberian intervention plan and determined that the advantage gained from blocking Portuguese ports from the British was far from worth the cost and eventual risk of an invasion from the south. Perhaps he could have determined that it would be better to maintain Prussia as a strong ally, and abandon the reconstitution of Poland- but I think it more likely that he would have favoured the liberation of a part of Poland in recognition of the revolutionary efforts of the Poles prior to their conquest. in 1795. Perhaps he might have broken up the Austrian Empire, freeing Hungary under another Bonaparte, adding Bohemia and Moravia to the COTR and providing a land connection to Poland. Perhaps he might have invaded Russia with more restricted objectives to push their frontier back at least to the second partition.

One pf the main mistake is his marriage with Austria. Prussia would have been better, to unify germany and make it an ally.

My wish history was Napoleon took both Russia and Spain, but in this scenario
Napoleon I - was Emperor of the France, King of Italy, Protector of the Rhine
Joseph I - Emperor of Spain and the Indies, King of Naples
Lucien I - King of Egypt
Elisa I - Empress of Russia
Louis I - King of Holland
Pauline I - Queen of of Prussia
Caroline Bonaparte - Grand Duchess consort of of Warsaw
Jérôme I - King of Westphalia
    --------------------------------
Zénaïde Bonaparte would take over as Empress of Spain
Napoleon II will take Emperor of the France,King of Italy, and King of the Rhine but dying at aged 21 and Louis Napoleon will take over as Napoleon III
Charlotte Bonaparte would take Queen of Egypt but will be over throne by the ottomans
