who do you think also has RP level content in boxing other than coach keppner? just start getting into boxing training recently and coach keppner's videos really help me build fundamental knowledge like RP, so a recommendation would help!
My first boxing coach tried to tell me this but couldn't put it into context. Really tried to drive it home but he wasnt the best at explaining it. Took me alot of years before i figured it out but i immediately had that ah ha moment and thought back to him trying to get me to understand this.
I was an amateur boxer for several years and I was never really stiff other than like my first two weeks then my trainer (Luis Melendez former national champ in Puerto Rico in the 70s) Told me "Just Relax son, just relax" the amount of care he put into saying that to me just made it click in my head somehow, and me mentally relaxing just translated into my physical movements, two or three months after that im going blow for blow against former state golden gloves champions in full out hard sparring. It was a RAPID PROGRESSION from just simply relaxing and then sparring helped understand all the small tiny details and nuances of a boxing match. I already i understand how to be loose and slick and avoid shots and relax, but watching this video is really nice. I never was really decided on whether it was better to have hands opened or closed (sort of just went with what felt right in the moment, back hand open to catch though) and this coach put it so brilliantly about not having your fist tight all day, to expand on it just imagine having both your fist closed for the duration of a 12 round fight, that is obviously not good and painful.
I have to come back to this video I feel like I’ve stiffened up a bit again. I was really feeling loose and was killing everyone but now I’ve gone back to tightening up in anticipation of the shots coming back

It would be a great video regarding getting over the fear of boxing (being hit). I read an old book on boxing that talked about the boxers would wash their face in some kind of soap to help toughen their skin (in theory), certain jaw/neck exercises, and emphasis on how to take a punch, a.k.a. rolling with the punches. Taking from old training to what is now trained would be interesting, as well as overcoming the fear of being hit by building confidence in how best take a punch, if such a thing even exists - ha! I imagine a good coach and training partners are paramount with this. The shock of being hit in the face for those that have never had that happen cannot be overstated.
Damn bro, this is maybe my 3rd or 4th video I’ve watched since find your channel but you seem like a cool dude. It’s clear you have spent just as much time if not more thinking about the fundamentals and what boxing mastering actually is and not just throwing punches to throw, or moving your feet just to move your feet. Good video man and you get your point across quite clear and understandable. Also to add to your point of it being easier to tell if your shoulders/upper body is tense compared to the legs, I wholeheartedly agree. When I was still a beginner long ago I would always feel like my shoulders where cinder blocks, it was the only thing I could feel for so long and I had almost no feeling in legs compared to my upper body/shoulders.
Amazing information. I’ve been at it about a month, got lucky and have been one on one with a national champion who’s retired. I noticed through sparring him I’m only tense with him the first couple of rounds. Sparring beginners I’m extremely calm and loose and perform very well for what I believe to be that reason. Good luck to y’all

What I do is I face the mirror holding 2 pound weights with my fingers open so that their basically resting on my thumb and palm. then I throw my straight punches becuse it me to close the fists at the end. I think Mike is pretty consistent. He explodes a lot, hence the hugging. But he does try to minimize the athleticism needed. His quick stance shifts, for example.
I do have a different opinion on it, I think it's definitely something I want to do a fight study on with one of his fights in his prime or close to it.
@coachKeithKeppner You should. You have some of the most insightful boxing content on UA-cam. If you could find a way to shorten the videos without losing all the crazy detail, you'd be a million subs+.
By far the best online coaching video ive seen. Really addresses some specific issues im currently facing while training for my first fight. Nice one 👊
Subscribed. Keppner your detail/understanding you have in minutia is fantastic, you definitely know what you're talking about with regards to looseness and snappyness. My fave modern fighter is Golovkin and even though he had the highest 'KO' ratio in middleweight/championship history, alot of his wins were accumulative damage TKOs. He'd knock them down and they wouldn't want to/get up in time. Versus lets say a David Lemeiux who had concussive force, he'd whack you once and thats it, goodnight. Really interesting insight
It reminds me of my amateur boxing days as a teen, my coach always used to say "the knockout will come, don't look for it". ANY KOs came from muscle memory 'loose' punches and for a split second i'd be confused as to why the opponent "reacted that way" to the punch, because I'd spent the whole fucking fight punching hard and the lad was fine 🤣but i throw something that felt 'empty' and he sleeps from that? Natural punch power is important ofcourse, but loose snappyness is the greatest factor I agree.
Exactly! You've hit it on the head with the shot you are trying so hard with to be hard is not the one that does it! And great observations on GGG and Lemeiux!
Great info. Awesome video. Hey I’d like to see a demonstration of your looseness coach of you shadowboxing or hitting the bag or something. I think that’d be cool. Thanks
Good views on relaxation i been boxing all.my life the point about the guard is grey area because i found that if im using the high guard i have to tense when opponents punch lands otherwise they can just punch through the guard or punch hurts more or dislodges the guard!
Please do a video on right handed southpaw I’ve tried training orthodox for awhile now but I keep wanting to go back to right handed southpaw stance when I start getting under pressure
Coach when i have been throwing the jab abd spamming it trought a lot of rounds my elbow starts to hurt, what could i be doing wrong? Am i not throwing it from the shoulder maybe and im trhowing it from the arm? Any tecnichal steps i might be missing?
Damn i had the happy feet when i stepped into another gym to spar i did fine was loose all around but my feet if that makes sense? Long story short i didn’t really warm up and hopped in the ring to spar and 1 minute in i try to counter and go off balance tore my acl and meniscus. Its my 2nd month after surgery and understanding things a lot more after watching a lot of this channel and really good advice appreciate it coach🥊
Love this video, im definitely going to take the pointers into my next session thanks, see with your neck should this be slightly tense to get ready for punches like what you mentioned about the core or should that be completely relax in the neck area
@@coachKeithKeppner sorted mate thanks for the response, just one more question see with keeping your eyes open is there anything I can do for that as I still have tendencies of closing my eyes in sparring
@@k99912i yes! 1. Have someone who is decent throw shots at you stopping an inch short so they don't hit you as practice 2. Widen your eyes so it is easier to resist blinking 3. Tell yourself they are a little b!&$ and hit like a child. We blink sometimes because we respect the person's punches too much and need to drop them down a notch psychologically
@coachKeithKeppner perfect mate thanks, would be great if you could go into depth about recovery and diet in 2 separate videos in the future. Getting your take on that would be great. Also keep up with the great work 💪
@@coachKeithKeppner … ok thank you… squat, plyometrics, more explosive weight lifting right??? And no weight lifting at all during upcoming fights??? Ur giving away ALOT of priceless info with these videos btw, Thank you so much brother
Hey, I noticed the number system with the combinations on the wall. Is it the same number system cus used for Tyson more specifically what does 6B= to?
That is the basic number system what's the only difference from some more modern number systems, What the four is a rear upper cut and the six is a rear hook and anything with a b with it is just going to be a body shot. That way we don't have to count to 12 LOL.
@@coachKeithKeppner I feel like a lot of my arm tension comes from fist, like look the way ali or bernard hopkins shadow boxed open hand I heard from couple places that many boxers dont even squeeze their fist in glove but they rather stack their fingers bones and only press a thumb insted of squeezing all fingers
Hey great question! I think you know by your question that if you are going to push a shot, the body punches are the one you can get success with doing that. I feel that the sternum and stomach shots are the best for that, with the liver shot the hard snap seems to do the trick just as fine as a more dig shot. What do you think?
Hi Mr keppner, thanks for the video. Im a still a beginner and this really gave me some insight, but i still have some questions. 1. Obviously this video is about being relaxed, but when i punch, is it normal for my core to get more tensed because when i punch i have to rotate my body for the power and range right ? (Its especially more tired for the right hand due to more rotation than left cuz of the bladed stance) 2. When i punch, i should only tense my fist as the punch is about to land right? 3. I watched the video, but i still dont really understand why a relaxed punch is more explosive then a tensed punch. I kind of get it but i kind of dont, im sorry it's not your problem that you didnt explain well. 4. Like question 2, should my shoulders tense when i punch? Thank you
Great question! When you rotate your core obviously tenses enough to slightly turn along with the hips, but make sure you are not tensing the abdominals unnecessarily. The reason why a loose punch is better than a tight punch is because of antagonist muscles. For instance, if you were trying to perform a push-up while tensing the muscles you utilize to do a pull-up, then Your body would not actually move because the muscles used for the exercise and the muscles used for the opposite motion or tense of the same time. Therefore, the same goes for a punch. You only want to utilize the muscles they used to deliver the punch. Also, the tightening of the fist right at or right before the punch connects helps with the jarring effect that it causes on the brain. The same goes with your shoulder. It should pop up or tense up right at that end point. Let me know if that makes it more clear! Thanks for the comment!
So you mean i should only flex the muscles needed to perform the movement on the right timing, example tricep when releasing the punch, my fist and shoulder on the furthest point of the punch and my bicep when the punch is coming back. So the main point of the video is to utilize every part of your body as much as you can on the right timing to actually have the "perfect" technique. Thanks again Mr Keppner. Speaking of perfecting technique, i have saw something online called "blind man stance". Basically it is just shadow boxing while closing your eyes - blind. The point of this is because you wont have visual aid, we are used to seeing our target and our form might deteriorate because instead of punching solely based on our forms range, we might lean forward to cover the distance that we see. But since we cant see anything, we will have to rely solely on our form. I have tried this because i was sparring with my brother and for some reason i couldnt touch him even tho he could touch me, then i realised i was leaning forward in my punches, not as much as past the knee or making me lose balance. (off topic, but i think leaning foward while punching is bad because when you lean forward while punching you cant rotate as much, meaning i have the same range between leaning and full rotating but the difference is i am putting my head further, i think to "lean" in a punch, i have to be in the leaned position first like the 60/40, because if im leaning in while punching i cant stop my head/pull back as fast compared to an alreadly "leaned" posistion like 60/40) So i tried shadow boxing eyes closed and it actually improved my form and balance. I think this is pretty interesting, idk if you have covered this before but here is an idea.
@@MonkeyDLuffy-lg8ro great stuff, to be clear everything I talk about is stuff I have personally seen work over the long haul and I make a point to say when something doesn't fall under that category. Absolutely not losing that base as a habit is excellent and so important for many aspects of boxing. Shadowing with eyes close is great as well, but it is not something I've had guys do a lot even though I have mentioned moving around the ring with eyes closed. So similar. While we shadowbox I work with my guys on everything including where to look so perhaps that's why I don't make a focus on it. Great comment and great work! Yeah so minimal effort to throw the punch and max squeeze at the end!!!
@@coachKeithKeppner Mr Keppner. I really thank you for the knowledge from this video. Turns out it was EXACTLY what I was missing :O. I have been training while keeping in mind not to have unnecessary tenses and I feel alot less tired and more importantly when I throw the 1-2 it always felt weird but now it feels so fast and natural. I know how to explain the feeling now. The punches(relaxed correctly) feel alot more like whips right? my punches feel alot faster like they are accelerating and I feel like the power is more focused on my fists. Thankd edit: I have to really have the correct timing when flexing right because sometimes I dont flex my muscles when the punch is flying out and I feel my joints and my arm falling off xD
Is James toney a good fighter to watch and also I’ve been watching Naoya inoue a lot more I gain a lot of insight from watching them both are those good choices?
Well I certainly have had a pure nose breather here and there, but the list of non jaw broken mouth breathing champions is a long one. Jaw wide open yes that can increase the likelihood, but just mouth breathing, no
@@jerarivers4720 since the loads with calisthenics tend to be less and after initial strength gains it starts to lean more on the conditions side of the force curve it generally is not going to make you tight.
A push up for instance for most people is a 15+ rep exercise so the level of muscular tension that occurs is a lot less than someone doing a heavy bench etc. let me know if that helps! Still drop them out a few days before your fight
@@coachKeithKeppner thanks I have a fight coming up this saturday and have always been the lifting type so I’ll let some of that go Would mobillity stretching help with tension?
I've only been practicing for about a year, but imo definitely work in a lot of dynamic stretching. Especially focus on your shoulders, wrists, upper and lower back, hamstrings, and calves. I also like to warm up my knees. Honestly, your body will tell you what you need to focus on because parts of your body will feel sore or tight if you're not properly stretching. Before and after workout are important, but light stretching on off days (like 5-10 min) is beneficial too. That's something that I'm trying to work on being more consistent on because I'm lazy lol. Just my two cents, but try to work it in as a regimen. same time, same day, same thing -- like any workout. Hope tht helps!
I really enjoyed the long form content. It's uniquely beneficial for those interested in the sweet science. We will smoke these tense sluggers begging for highlights in the ring @@coachKeithKeppner

Good views on relaxation i been boxing all.my life the point about the guard is grey area because i found that if im using the high guard i have to tense when opponents punch lands otherwise they can just punch through the guard or punch hurts more or dislodges the guard!
Yes loose and then tension when the punch comes to deflect it! Thanks for the comment, brother!
@@coachKeithKeppner fantastic discussion please keep the art alive.
@@maaq80 thank you my friend!
I love your videos thanks!
Thank you my friend!
Please do a video on right handed southpaw I’ve tried training orthodox for awhile now but I keep wanting to go back to right handed southpaw stance when I start getting under pressure
I understand, well any reason you don't just stay a right handed southpaw? The downside is the 2 can be now very powerful. How is your left hand 2?
Coach when i have been throwing the jab abd spamming it trought a lot of rounds my elbow starts to hurt, what could i be doing wrong? Am i not throwing it from the shoulder maybe and im trhowing it from the arm? Any tecnichal steps i might be missing?
Yes, sounds like you are hyper extending it! Practice locking the arm before it fully extends, let me know if that makes sense!
Hello from France! What do you think of subriel matias? He is an "arm puncher" and very "loose" too 🤔
Damn i had the happy feet when i stepped into another gym to spar i did fine was loose all around but my feet if that makes sense? Long story short i didn’t really warm up and hopped in the ring to spar and 1 minute in i try to counter and go off balance tore my acl and meniscus. Its my 2nd month after surgery and understanding things a lot more after watching a lot of this channel and really good advice appreciate it coach🥊
Good lesson learned! Alright, time for you to hit that next level!
I would assume for the most part this still applies to kickboxing and mma etc, albeit a few nuanced situations
Yes, I can say that I have worked with a few MMA fighters who are at a high level and it definitely applies.
Regarding tension in the shoulders, what if I’m just like that? Do I need a Thai massage?
Ah so drop the arm by your side and have the shoulders how they fall!
Love this video, im definitely going to take the pointers into my next session thanks, see with your neck should this be slightly tense to get ready for punches like what you mentioned about the core or should that be completely relax in the neck area
Thanks for the comment and question!!! Everything, I mean everything should be as relaxed as possible!!! So that as well!
@@coachKeithKeppner sorted mate thanks for the response, just one more question see with keeping your eyes open is there anything I can do for that as I still have tendencies of closing my eyes in sparring
@@k99912i yes!
1. Have someone who is decent throw shots at you stopping an inch short so they don't hit you as practice
2. Widen your eyes so it is easier to resist blinking
Also keep up with the great work 💪
@@k99912i absolutely! That would be a great topic!!!! Thanks brother!
Quick question… how many days per week or how often should a boxer do strength and conditioning aka weight lifting workouts???
2-3 if they don't have a fight coming up that week
What about hand position i mean making a fist, i have been experimenting with it and i think there's might be an bulls eye
can you elaborate on your question or thought?
@@coachKeithKeppner I feel like a lot of my arm tension comes from fist, like look the way ali or bernard hopkins shadow boxed open hand I heard from couple places that many boxers dont even squeeze their fist in glove but they rather stack their fingers bones and only press a thumb insted of squeezing all fingers
Is the 1-2 left hook to the body-head a good combo
Absolutely! Setting up head.sjots to get a liver. If you want to make it better finish up top with something!
Best boxing advice ever
Thanks my friend!
Yahushua HaMashiach is the Truth
In your opinion, does it make sense to snap head punches (shakes brain more) and to push/dig body punches (compresses internal organs more)?
Hey great question! I think you know by your question that if you are going to push a shot, the body punches are the one you can get success with doing that. I feel that the sternum and stomach shots are the best for that, with the liver shot the hard snap seems to do the trick just as fine as a more dig shot. What do you think?
@@coachKeithKeppner I think the same as you. Glad to hear I am not alone in this opinion. :)

Thanks!
Do let ur shoulders be loose or almost shrugged for some more protection?
Loose!
@@coachKeithKeppner thanks! Do u think 30 is too old to get into boxing. Atleast just to get to sparring level
(Its especially more tired for the right hand due to more rotation than left cuz of the bladed stance)
(off topic, but i think leaning foward while punching is bad because when you lean forward while punching you cant rotate as much, meaning i have the same range between leaning and full rotating but the difference is i am putting my head further, i think to "lean" in a punch, i have to be in the leaned position first like the 60/40, because if im leaning in while punching i cant stop my head/pull back as fast compared to an alreadly "leaned" posistion like 60/40)
So i tried shadow boxing eyes closed and it actually improved my form and balance.
Thankd
edit: I have to really have the correct timing when flexing right because sometimes I dont flex my muscles when the punch is flying out and I feel my joints and my arm falling off xD
@@MonkeyDLuffy-lg8ro that's great and yes now you need to get that down so take it slow for a little bit and slowly get faster with it!! Great work!!
Is James toney a good fighter to watch and also I’ve been watching Naoya inoue a lot more I gain a lot of insight from watching them both are those good choices?
Yes and yes! Naoya is after my time when I was boxing but James Toney is excellent to get that relaxed and Loose feel!

Making noises does nothing absolutitly nothing but develop a bad habit that leads only to broken JAw you inhale and exhale through your nose only
Well I certainly have had a pure nose breather here and there, but the list of non jaw broken mouth breathing champions is a long one. Jaw wide open yes that can increase the likelihood, but just mouth breathing, no
They do that cause it makes the judges think punches are landing
For the weight lifting part, is calisthenics included?
You mean for strength training? Yes calisthenics can certainly be useful.
@@coachKeithKeppner and would it increase stiffness/tension or just the opposite?
@@jerarivers4720 since the loads with calisthenics tend to be less and after initial strength gains it starts to lean more on the conditions side of the force curve it generally is not going to make you tight.
A push up for instance for most people is a 15+ rep exercise so the level of muscular tension that occurs is a lot less than someone doing a heavy bench etc. let me know if that helps! Still drop them out a few days before your fight
@@coachKeithKeppner thanks I have a fight coming up this saturday and have always been the lifting type so I’ll let some of that go
Would mobillity stretching help with tension?
Can you be loose and not letting your hands be low?
yup!
@@coachKeithKeppner thanks for the tips man, i will watch this video soon fully, im a 17 year old mma fighter this really helps
@@Thewhonewhoknocks yes sir!!! Best of luck on your journey!!!!
What kind of exercise or stretch can I do to be more loose before practice?
Go to 40:00 in the video!!! Everything from there is good for you!
