Every now and then, a new talent emerges that makes your heart race and makes you want to experience more and more of what they have to offer.
This is the era of self-produced music videos. We are fortunate to have access to creations of raw unwitnessed talent by the artists themselves, almost as if the artist has created this package just for us, without being filtered away or blocked from reaching us directly.
So on this Valentine's Day of 2016, here is a stunning music video by a new phenomenon, Manish Khushalani.
Surely you will find reflections of Amit Trivedi vocals and music here, and of Nikhil D'Souza vocals and guitars( he sang the beautiful song "Shaam" in the film 'Aisha' with Amit Trivedi and Neuman Pinto) and the self-created musical star Shankar Tucker (whose self-produced music videos of him playing the clarinet, the guitar, the kanjira and more have impressed music lovers all over the globe).
But you will also find plenty of talent in this fixed frame that tries to encapsulate not one but many different avatars of Manish. You will see him perform on the guitar, the ukulele, the cajon drum, the harmonium and a shaker. The appearance of the melodica in the first interlude is really exciting.
Another wonderful aspect of today's video editing capabilities allows him to sing and record himself 5 times and sync it so seamlessly, so as to create an ensemble piece.
The cherry-on-the cake are that the lyrics of the song too are penned by Manish himself (so here he departs from the Amit Trivedi mold by doing Amit's and Amitabh Bhattacharya's tasks all by himself). He is a budding editor and film-maker as well with quite a few shorts and a documentary to his credit.

The words almost hide as much as they reveal. They seem to talk of a budding and evolving relationship. There is a desire to be cared for, nurtured, but also a desire to be private and let the cracks and joints be. There is a desire for acceptance, and a statement that asserts, "It's alright". It is not a Gulzaresque satirical line that says "Haal Chaal Theek Thaak Hain" but something that is in the spirit of the Japanese aesthetic of 'Wabi-Sabi'. 'Wabi-sabi' is a world-view that is centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. It allows one to cherish a vase with a crack on it or not try to cover up a brick showing through the paint of a wall. It accepts the 'as-is' nature of things in the here-and-now.
Well, give the song a view and a careful listen and judge the song for yourself. A new talent has arrived on the scene.
