Exactly! Daphne doesn’t sound like a 19 year old. The whole argument of “Mimi was a drug addict so she would have a more gravelly voice” is BS. Mimi was addicted to heroin, which she shot, it wouldn’t have had any effect on her voice. To me, Mimi is supposed to be this sweet girl who just happens to be a stripper because she has no other way to make a living and got into drugs young, like a lot of people do. Not what sounds like a 40 year old chain smoker. Maybe Jonathan had a different view but if he was going to pick Daphne, he should’ve made Mimi at LEAST 30 and have her been a heroin addict since she was a teenager. That would’ve made more sense.

Daphne was chosen as a original member of cast and she was the first to play Mimi so how on earth someone can say that she should sound different. Apparently her voice was something director was looking for. Rosario make a whole new version of Mimi and it’s okay but she can’t be compared to originals. Besides she really can’t sing… she’s great actress but musical is about singing mainly. In Out Tonight she didn’t sound that bad (thank god for auto tune and loud music) but in Another Day it killed my ears

Here is my opinion Daphne's voice is an acquired taste. The first time many hear it they don't like it or understand it, especially after hearing Rosario's sweet and generally more appeasing voice, but its intriguing enough to want to listen to it again to understand all the hype and eventually you just find yourself liking it some how or thats how I feel about it anyways
There's also a big difference in mixing and production between the original cast album and the movie soundtrack. The original had very little studio polish to make it sound as close to the live show as possible. Whereas the movie version had a way bigger budget and was made to sound perfectly polished.
The live version of the play is very different in terms of the context of someone that is Raw, Passionate and Delivers every day. Having seen the play live 6 times and the movie 20 times, that's the distinction that comes to mind for me. That's not a negative on Rosario as she did a remarkable job as well. The cast grabs your throat and says LISTEN!

I like Daphne better because she sounds "street" and jaded enough for Mimi, but can still pull off young and sweet too
