This product has probably been requested by the Pro Teams that are sponsored by K-Edge as at the moment they don't use the default Wahoo Elemnt Bolt aero mount and instead use the non-aero wahoo k-edge mount. Now they can use the more aero mount and lock it in so it counts for the UCI Bike Weight. Not sure anyone in public would buy one of them at that price.
Thank you for nice unboxing introduction. I completely agree with you conclusion. But there is one reason for buying K-edge Wahoo holder. I have 3T aero handlebar with very tiny round place next to stem for fixing Wahoo mount. Unfortunately original Wahoo holder is "too much" wide to mount on my aero handlebar.
My Bolt front mount broken up after 3 weeks of use, it probably happened during a race with a pavé sector. No crashes, just the road vibrations. Now, it does not tight anymore to the handlebars and it moves up and down while you push the buttons. I am seriously considering to buy the "K-edge", if it going to last years I dont think it is expensive.
Do you reckon the K-Edge mount would work with an Easton EC90 Aero Bar/Stem combo? I found that the space on either side of the stem-to-bar clamp for that setup to be very narrow and impossible to mount the thicker wahoo clamp without it leaning to one side. I can see from the video that the K-Edge arm mount width is ALMOST half as thick as the wahoo one. Hopeful if anyone has experienced the same issue with the same setup and could shed some light on some other options!
If these came with the GoPro combo mount I'd be onboard. I desperately want a a Wahoo Roam Aero mount with a GoPro Combo mount just to maintain a neat setup.
Totaly agree about the need for K-Edge to slice the price in half. The product is really nice but it's too bad if people avoid it because of its exaggerated price tag and I hope they are listening.
The out of the box Wahoo mount doesn’t secure very snugly to some bars (Zipp Aero). My mount tends to move a bit when: super aero tucked (touch it with my chest), on bumpy roads or gravel. The K-Edge is much tighter and doesn’t move around at all. Price is stupid Not wild about the hole at the bottom Not wild around the two time metal design
I’m pretty sure the little screw allows it to be screwed into the mount so that the weight can be included in the bike weight at UCI events. I’d like the mounting option on the otherside to the wahoo standard unit, but not at that price
The cut out in the bottom of the mount is interesting. Can't be more aero than a smooth undersurface, not that the gains are significant - but it is an "aero" mount. Probably for weight saving to bring it closer to the standard. Wonder if you could change the insert to mount something else - maybe bringing something a bit more aero to a Garmin? Or if the cut out is so you could get a replacement insert with a GoPro mount protruding through the hole. In summary, less aero, heavier and very expensive for identical functionality.
Also so it doesn't screw the altimeter readings. The areo savings isn't a discussion I went into... if anyone is running round 31.8mm bars and needs an aero head unit.. on a road bike... their priorities are skewed. :) I guess it's stiffer?
Could be 1/2 the price goes to recoup the cost of outfitting the pro teams. Plus another 10% goes for using Sagan's name and 15% to Wahoo for licensing of the Bolt's name and mount. That would give us a $25 product that makes some sense.
I had exactly the same troublesome unpacking experience (with the TT mount version) & trying not to scratch the finish in the process. Btw the Bolt doesn't talk to satelites, it merely listens to them. Sorry I'm a telecoms engineer.
Hi Shane, I'm wondering if you could help! I'm looking to purchase a Wahoo Bolt but I can't find anything online to tell me how it's possible to mount to an aero bar rather than a handle bar (in essence, needing to rotate the device through 90 degrees) are you able to suggest any products that may solve this problem? Many thanks for another great video.
BahFly or KEdge should have Wahoo compatible mounts for aero setups. The original ELEMNT used to ship with an aero mount compatible mount. The newer units don’t include this.
Disappointing you can not add the camera mount. I suppose that would detract from the aerodynamics, but would be a good feature and help justify the price. Perhaps when on rougher roads looking at your map directions it provides less vibration.
Looking at the design, I can see why it'd be pricier, but I don't see how it can be a 3 figure price. Why I think it's pricier: Machining it would be more complex. the actual cycle time would be longer, and it would probably require the part to be flipped or moved multiple times to machine it fully. They may have avoided this by using a 5th axis, but i doubt it as it'd be more efficient to run multiple parts at the same time.
I got a wahoo bolt mount that fits my enve aero ses bars plus has a camera mount on the underside that I paid 30 usd for. I have the original k edge mount for the wahoo and hate it. Put it on my winter bike bc its stupid and heavy
Chinese mounts are pretty good and much, much, muuuuuuch cheaper. I had to buy one mounted on stem bolts because standard out-front mounts were off-centered and crooked on my current stem/handlebar setup -_-. I can confirm that GUB (or whatever it's called) stem bolt aluminium Garmin/Bryton/Cateye mounts are compatible with Wahoo without any bracket modifications. You just need to turn it by 90 degrees and you're set.
It's compatible with stock Garmin dedicated connector. Fin holes are wide enough to clear Wahoo mount fins without any modifications (you can modify generic Garmin mounts by cutting wider fin holes if needed).
Hi mich, I am considering buying a GUB mount for my Wahoo (my original one is crooked on the bar as well). You've mentioned that the GUB will take Wahoo, too, but how's the fit? Is it loose or a perfect tight fit? Thanks!
It's not perfect fit as there is no that sharp snap-in-place kind of feeling, like with original mounts. So it is a little loose but still very secure nonetheless (it won't move by itself on bumps etc.). It didn't bother me at all so far and I'm very satisfied with the mount. It's longer so I find it easier to press buttons and visibility while riding out of the saddle is much better. If you're worried about the fit (I personally wouldn't though) there is option to buy K-Edge Wahoo replacement insert kit which should fit GUB mount by the looks of it.
I've got a K-Edge for the Edge units and camera, and the Cycliq DUO for the Element/BOLT and camera. Not sure if they're the best solution - it's what I'm using though.
But it's surely sturdier than the flimsy plastic one provided by Wahoo. Yesterday trying to remount it on my bike after unpacking from traveling, I pushed the screw through the top part. Plastic piece broke. So now, well... I have a useless plastic mount on my hands. The K-Edge, I assume, wouldn't do that being made out from alumnium. But I agree that the price is ridiculously high, way too high. I won't buy it and will continue to look for an alternative solution (aside from the tie wraps I temporarily installed!). Thx for your honest review.
i mean for Aerobars (sorry incorrect spelling) such as S-Works Aerofly, Zipp SL Aero etc (regular bars with Aero shape), where clamp spacing is limited (usually 10mm, standard ones doesn't fit for most cases there)
Arhhh... ok those. This mount is for oversized round 31.8mm bars. You'll need to look at those prong/spoon like mounts for non standard aero road bars. The upside of those is they'll like have more aero advantage than spending $ on an aero GPS mount.
OOC why use the Bolt itself (or a Garmin, etc)? What do these units give you that a phone can't? Battery life? I considered getting one but realized it's just going to get in the way as I have my phone mounted there instead.
Battery life, better suited to outdoor use, ruggedness, ANT+ support. A phone can do a lot of those, but for the purpose a dedicated bike computer wins most of the time.
atanasg No I don't think you have to update that often. Certainly less often than you do phones. There isn't much new on the head units really, just easier to use and probably quicker mapping.
Looks good but they have to be having a laugh at $100. That's some new tyres, a basic service or a training plan or two. Haven't had a problem with the standard bolt mount in about a year.
Not sure why K-Edge made this other than for pros. It isn't as aero with that big gap in the bottom. I guess if someone wanted something other than black, K-Edge has a few different color selections. Still this is way over priced. I do like the K-Edge Combo mounts though.
Not a fan of the "it's metal and does nothing" line. Some bikes are metal, are they naff? Pricey AF though. Notable that the width of the band on the bars is much skinnier so I could actually get my Bolt central on my stem with this unit. Generally more solid than the original mount which is AU$20! For just a bit of plastic!!
Does nothing 'smart'. It's a chunk of metal. How can it be 25% the price of something that is packed with technology. I should have been clearer.... it was just my frustration on show.
But that's like saying that a steel or alu frame isn't smart and a chunk of metal? I assume there is specialised tech that goes into the creation of this thingy.
I have two issues with the mount supplied with the Bolt. The mounting band is to wide, and would not allow the unit to be centered on the stem. This thing is right in front of your face, and constantly looking at the asymmetry bothered me. And, I found the factory mount to be a bit flimsy when pushing the buttons on the face of the Bolt. The action of the buttons on the Bolt are great, but it seems that the mount would flex to much which made it somewhat less initiative when pressing buttons. I purchased the original K-Edge (non-aero) mount, and was pleased with the stiffness, and being able to center the unit. But, not pleased with the aesthetic. The interface between the mount and unit was ugly to say the least. My only complaint is that K-Edge should have launched the aero mount only. They probably rushed a mount to market while engineering was underway on the aero mount. Now they have gotten me for 2 mounts. The later being somewhat over priced.
I forget to say, this cheap packaging is completely inappropriate for such an expensive product - nevertheless it gives me an idea of the actual production costs.
I know Shane, I like your honest and critical reviews - I guess this was a little misleading, I had a different meaning in mind, I should work on my english skills ;)
Maybe not you. But some riders have handlebars that require a slimmer mounting design that requires something like this. Which is why they put a premium on the price I think.
Hmm hmm, for 70 Euros they are not really THAT special... the original one goes for 20Euros. Looks cool, is surely premium, but as you said, way too overpriced. I would have expected better GPS coverage or bluetooth connection due to the metal construction working as an antenna or something, but this is just a fancy mount, nothing else. And you even had to use the locking screw from the original one ?!
Usually unboxing is so rewarding to watch. Not so this time with that nasty wrap. This product seems to be very overpriced for what you get. If it at least shaved a few grams then the weight weenies could rejoice and justify.
@@gplama honesty curious why it’s necessary. It’s heavier and more money. I’m a bike noob and don’t understand why it’s nicer? I’ll buy it if it is better for sure but don’t understand why to get it.

The Wahoo doesn't talk to satellites in space, it just listens to them.
I knew that'd trigger someone. :)
Can you just buy the blue bit and change out the k edge mount you already have for garmin?
Yes. However the screws are at 90deg and get in the way of the camera mount screws.
Can you measure clamp width please ?
(K-Edge is only option for Aerobars handlebars it seems)
Thank you
This isn't going to be any good for a TT setup. Look at the original Wahoo ELEMNT Aerobar/TT Bike Mount
i mean for Aerobars (sorry incorrect spelling) such as S-Works Aerofly, Zipp SL Aero etc (regular bars with Aero shape), where clamp spacing is limited (usually 10mm, standard ones doesn't fit for most cases there)

Better GPS, more compact and cheaper to replace if the worst happens!

Is it cheaper though? Or is this yet another gadget the technological cycle forces you to upgrade every two years?
atanasg No I don't think you have to update that often. Certainly less often than you do phones. There isn't much new on the head units really, just easier to use and probably quicker mapping.
Does it center with regular stems? Stock aero mount doesn't have enough reach to center most of the stems.
That is why I tapped two M3 holes to my aluminum stem and using Wahoo plastic spoon shaped aero mount.
Do you know if that k-edge mount will allow you to put the wahoo roam on it?
You'll have to get the Roam specific one.
Looks good but they have to be having a laugh at $100. That's some new tyres, a basic service or a training plan or two. Haven't had a problem with the standard bolt mount in about a year.

I've got the Cycliq DUO for the BOLT/camera combo and another K-Edge for the Garmin/camera combo.

Anyone know the exact width of the ring that attach to the handlebar?

Shane Miller - GPLama thanks. But it is the other width. I am running s-works aerofly ii with limited space between stem and flat part of handlebar.

yeah! too expensive! nice video!
Why anyone would buy this at that price is beyond me. The mount supplied by Wahoo is more than sufficient, is lighter and less cluttered imo.
Just made a 40£ loss on these bought them hoping they were slimmer than the original to fit my pro vibe aero bars and no joy haha
I would only buy this if at 20AUD MAX

Agreed, so much overpriced “tech” in cycling.
I cannot see the point of this product. No greater functionality (and higher weight) than the mount you get with the device!
