The 2021 edition of the Sarbari Roy Chowdhury Festival of Music premiered for the first time in its history both online and internationally in three time zones. The festival features an exciting lineup of highly praised artists from Kolkata, India and Toronto, Canada, hand-selected by Artistic Director Sougata Roy Chowdhury.
The Sarbari Roy Chowdhury Foundation has partnered with Raag-Mala Toronto to present the festival this year with the mission to provide a much-needed platform and support to mid-career and emerging artists who have been hit specifically hard during this 2 year-long global pandemic.
The Sarbari Roy Chowdhury Foundation was created in 2012 after the passing of renowned sculptor & artist Sarbari Roy Chowdhury in order to carry forth his idealism, passion and his artistic thoughts and to keep up the legacy through the younger generation.
The Sarbari Roy Chowdhury Festival was first presented in 2013 on the 80th Birth Anniversary of Sarbari Roy Chowdhury. The aim of the festival is to provide an encouraging platform for young talented artists to perform and showcase their creativity.
    Message from the Director:
Since the beginning of the pandemic, artists have lost their natural habitat of live performances and been forced to try and share their music online. This has not only presented challenges for artists from a technical point of view, but also in the contest for exposure. Listeners have been bombarded with concerts from all over the world right at their fingertips. The top maestros have become even more accessible for everyone’s enjoyment, but sadly many younger musicians who have dedicated their lives to reach such a high level of expression in this art form are not finding the same platform to showcase their rich artistic expression. This is why this year’s festival is presenting a group of younger and talented artists from both India and Canada. We hope to present these talented artists in a format that cultivates community engagement and support, which is why we are asking the audience to select a patron level as their ticket to access the festival, and to donate generously while viewing the concerts.

It is extremely heartening & reassuring to note that here is an artist who gives priority to creativity and emotional content over display of technical dexterity and scholastic jugglery of rhythm. I am sure, his upbringing has inculcated in him the finest sense of restraint and taste.

50 years ago there were about 5 or 6 great Sarod players, now it's like UA-cam is full of sarod players, although non are nearly on the level of the ones half a century ago. Although I'll say I do like the Borkar brothers do stand out head and shoulders above the crowd.

No mention of the Raag. Most likely Raag Basant Mukari. Beautiful playing.

When tabla kick in, I wonder about ratio of stuff being written/prearranged vs. amount of improvisation.

Being a student of Sougata babu, I can assure you that he is improvising more than 95% of what is being played here.
