Imagine if his parents had given him a stable loving foundation. LP could have broke every rushing record in yards & touchdowns. He could have made millions and blessed his parents for raising him right. Rest Easy to “The #1 Best College Tailback I Ever seen”. From a former D1 running back that made it to The NFL
LP was amazing. Size, Speed, Agility, Hands, Power........you name it, the man was a man among boys. Even in the NFL.....if he would've got his head together....sure fire top 10 back. To bad about his issues....I blame no one but his pathetic parents that put him through the life they did.
I agree he could have broken a lot of records. He was sick though. Big guys with that much power just don't run that fast. Ran like Earl Campbell but was faster.
Being an Iowa Hawkeye fan, I hate the Cornhuskers. It's in our blood to hate them. But I gotta say, that Phillips team was the best to ever play college football. I've never seen a team destroy people like that. Truly unstoppable. Even us haters had to marvel.
What a tragic story. I remember watching him play college ball, and even then he was undraftable. When he got taken, it was not a secret that he was a massive risk, but he did have a great rookie year. It was downhill from there. I did think that when he got to the CFL he may see a way to redemption, but it only got worse. I just hope that he can find peace within himself. Just sad.
Wow! The run @2:30 elite level footwork . My favorite RB growing up. LP had Barry Sanders like footwork. LP had the best two step move at the point of attack to make guys miss , big play college RB. Elite level skills set for a great RB
Lawrence Phillips could be either recently retired or retired soon as one of the top 5 backs in the history of the NFL right now if he grew up in a home only SLIGHTLY better than the one he did.
+Saint Nicholas I agree! He was awesome RB! Great field vision. He did very well in the pros! I wish he could have stayed out of trouble. The Rams did everything to help him but had to cut him. I am a fan of the player, L.P. So to the RB L.P. R.I.P.
I needed to see this video after hearing about LP's death. What a pleasure it was to watch him play in Lincoln, and I wish that Tom Osborne had started him instead of Calvin Jones in the 1994 Orange Bowl.
TheEdub1 i hear what you are saying, and i'm not going to deny it(even as much as i'd love to believe every single one was dope free) but you also have to take into consideration at how ahead of the curve Nebraska was in the strength and conditioning back then. the big colleges of today had to catch up with that
Shake, power, speed, and hands... no wonder the Rams thought Jerome Bettis was expendable... my God, how could they have used this brother up and never get him any help.
bullshit , a grown man given a million chances to succeed that gets a hard on beating on women n kids . was able to maintain a hectic schedule while mowing down chicks , doing commercials & so on . so mentally I'll ? sure "Dr. knownada".
I'm from Nebraska and Philipps was very special. However, there is a saying that you can take the boy out of the hood but you can never take the hood out of the boy. He let his 12 year old self run his life.
I knew lawrence pretty well, he was a good kid who wanted attention all the time, shame though, this cat needed meds,......badly. He definately was abused as a kid, I was too so I know what it means, no excuse though, he fucked up his life.
I just find out he died and I got so sad, I still remembering him when he played in Barcelona Dragons for NFL Europe, he was so amazing, long time ago i was upset when I heard from an american guy that he was on jail, but is so sad he is dead now...
Da Tube Not even close. LP was an awesome back in college who ran behind some of the best lines ever. Don't forget that Ahman Green essentially did the same when he got on the field. Marshawn was just on a different level running. Did the same stuff on the field as LP but at CAL. A much better all around player who played all facets of the game well. I think that if LP has had his head on straight, he might have prolonged his career, definitely, but not been better than Lynch. My could-have-been-Marshawn-before-Marshawn award goes to Onterrio Smith.
Man phillips was a beast! To bad he had to many problems. Didn't he and Scott Frost fight cause coach Frost was trying to protect phillips girlfriend from getting beat
haha... cast: lawrence phillips (a host of broken ankles). funny shit. LP was probably(is in my opinion) the most talented back we've ever had here at nebraska. granted i didn't get to see the real old generations of husker football. but i have a hard time believing anyone was more talented way back in the day
Thats interesting, because a young lady smacked him first. joe was wrong but i m almost certain you dont even know a handful of real men who just walked away from that incident. i truly hope joe mixon can become a better man because of that situation but a lady cant respond in that manner at all.
Darren Jones I get what you're saying. My main point is that Mixon needs to see/hear what happens when talent goes to waste because you put yourself in questionable situations in the first place. Now, instead of being a sure bet first rounder, he is going to plummet. Clarett himself would be the first to tell Joe the same thing. In the era of social media, all high-profile athletes, male or female, need to be especially mindful of their actions, because almost everything ends up on camera these days. One false move can cost you a lot of money (Mixon), or end your career (Rice).
Marcus Licinius Crassus , you are exactly right. its a very thin line to navigate for these young people. i remember dez bryant a few years back with sketchy traits at ok state. they did a helluva job insulating him and i hope that these big universities start more baby sitting when necessary. some of these guys arent ready initially, so with that, i agree with on that
I was a huge LP fan but its so obvious that he was on steroids like a lot of Nebraska players back then. Look at him as a freshman and sophomore then look at him as a junior. Regardless the man was filthy and definitely would have won the heisman over Eddie George.
@bojipounder Watch this vid again numbnuts, he's got seven TDs in this clip alone that come after contact. LP was AP with extra baggage, and without that he would've smashed the League.
And yes. That includes Rozier and Rogers... they won the Heisman but Lawrence was head and shoulders above them. I saw Mike's career. Grear back but Lawrence was BETTER
lol @ Cal Jones being better than LP. Not even close. Looking at LP's stats is worthless. Those teams were so good that LP was often pulled at halftime.
Now that we know more about concussions, could his troubles have been caused by the constant beating and blows to the head?... we didn't know that before, we just called him a thug.. now the NFL is hiding the trauma these athletes go through... just saying.. we got a new movie about it now..
+Mark Pringle I don't know about that. There strength and conditioning program was second to none during this period of time. I can remember the size I put on in college and I went to Central Michigan and the one thing I can remember is always being hungry from practice, strength and conditioning etc. I lifted a lot all through high school but in college it's a whole different story in the winter months.
Greatest I Back EVER for BIG RED!! Greatest talent the program ever had ..period
LP was amazing. Size, Speed, Agility, Hands, Power........you name it, the man was a man among boys. Even in the NFL.....if he would've got his head together....sure fire top 10 back. To bad about his issues....I blame no one but his pathetic parents that put him through the life they did.
R.I.P. Lawrence Phillips
Nigga are u serious LMAO
+William Diemert I can't believe that!! Such a great talent but had some much problems. The Devil was really inside of Lawrence Phillips!
R.I.P. Lawrence. Thanks for the memories. Husker forever.
That is a once in a generation or more kind of talent. He was one of the best. Ever. (OHIO STATE fan, BTW),
I agree he could have broken a lot of records. He was sick though. Big guys with that much power just don't run that fast. Ran like Earl Campbell but was faster.
He was a great runner but watching this is sad as I know how it ended R.I.P.
I would say this was a fortuitously bad choice of song for this guy's highlights...
Lmao exactly
Couldn't agree more
yes
Right
No cuz the ppl that wrote this song an the ppl that like it probably love him cuz they do it too
RIP, to one of the best nebraska football players of all time
Being an Iowa Hawkeye fan, I hate the Cornhuskers. It's in our blood to hate them. But I gotta say, that Phillips team was the best to ever play college football. I've never seen a team destroy people like that. Truly unstoppable. Even us haters had to marvel.
What an athlete. What a school. Nebraska used to dominate college football. Today not so much.
Larry E 94-97 no program better than Cornhuskers!!!!!
Just sad.
Truly a man amongst boys on the football field...
Super appropriate song title for the video
I was thinking the same thing.. lmao
Wow! The run @2:30 elite level footwork . My favorite RB growing up. LP had Barry Sanders like footwork. LP had the best two step move at the point of attack to make guys miss , big play college RB. Elite level skills set for a great RB
Bro one of the best runs I’d ever seen yo footwork was legendary
What a heartbreaking story, life can be messed up sometimes.
hands down one if the greatest running backs that I've ever seen ...so sad...
Very sad that his only solace came on the football field and couldn't carry over into his everyday life. RIP, very unfortunate
Power. Speed. Agility. Bo Jackson with an attitude. One of the greatest collegiate running backs EVER.
Lawrence Phillips could be either recently retired or retired soon as one of the top 5 backs in the history of the NFL right now if he grew up in a home only SLIGHTLY better than the one he did.
rip Lp best college running back I ever seen
i feel old. i remember. watching in play.
RIP... could have been a hall of famer in the NFL... smh
+Saint Nicholas I agree! He was awesome RB! Great field vision. He did very well in the pros! I wish he could have stayed out of trouble. The Rams did everything to help him but had to cut him. I am a fan of the player, L.P. So to the RB L.P. R.I.P.
+Cheryl Greene yeah his life & pro career was cut short thanks to his off the field problems
he went to the right NFL coach I think. Dick V was the right man for the job with him. RIP LP
+Chad Shepard Yes, Dick V. hung in with him as long as he could. Hurt him so bad, he was crying when he cut him loose. Just wasted talent.
+Saint Nicholas Best huskers running back ever!! Such a damn same he had so many issues with himself!
Without a doubt, the greatest college running back I've ever seen.
Andrew Hilger no Barry Sanders what rock u been under for the past 30 yrs
Sanders did to everyone what Phillips did to MSU and the Gators. His college highlight reel is just a bit longer
I needed to see this video after hearing about LP's death. What a pleasure it was to watch him play in Lincoln, and I wish that Tom Osborne had started him instead of Calvin Jones in the 1994 Orange Bowl.
R.I.P. Lawrence Philips #1
RIP. Guy had size, power, and speed.
Rest Easy LP #1
"smack my bitch up" isn't the best song to put in Lawrence Phillips's highlight video.
TheEdub1 i hear what you are saying, and i'm not going to deny it(even as much as i'd love to believe every single one was dope free) but you also have to take into consideration at how ahead of the curve Nebraska was in the strength and conditioning back then. the big colleges of today had to catch up with that
Lord be with LP
Shake, power, speed, and hands... no wonder the Rams thought Jerome Bettis was expendable... my God, how could they have used this brother up and never get him any help.
Rest in peace. You really could have made better choices, man.
💯🙏
RIP Larry.
Dude was a great college running back. He made his own choices, what he did was most certainly his fault.
Concur
He was freak of nature in college football.
Fun RB to watch. I wish things had worked out better for him.
R.I.P.
I Irony of the song choice can't be a simple oversight.
R.I.P
Rest in Prison! 1975-2016 Lawrence Phillips
A sad end to a sad life
He was mentally ill. Not his fault what he did. So sad to hear he passed before he could get any help. RIP to him and all his victims.
+Ethan C its tragic, to bad Obama didn't help him.
bullshit , a grown man given a million chances to succeed that gets a hard on beating on women n kids . was able to maintain a hectic schedule while mowing down chicks , doing commercials & so on . so mentally I'll ? sure "Dr. knownada".
Dahoss ok using your logic I'm going to claim temporary insanity for the 20 seconds it will take to beat the shit out of you . How bout dat skipper ?
+Dahoss Good one, man. :)
God damn, he was so fucking talented. Puts the N in Nowledge no doubt
RIP/////
RIP to that man LP.
I heard he's a youth minister now! What a class act!
Lol
I'm from Nebraska and Philipps was very special. However, there is a saying that you can take the boy out of the hood but you can never take the hood out of the boy. He let his 12 year old self run his life.
Demons are now gone RIP
rip big mam
bump for killing cellmate
John Smith Classic Larry!
All ways number #1 RIP LP
RIP Laurence Phillips
I knew lawrence pretty well, he was a good kid who wanted attention all the time, shame though, this cat needed meds,......badly. He definately was abused as a kid, I was too so I know what it means, no excuse though, he fucked up his life.

This dude would have been Marshawn Lynch x3 if he played longer in the NFL. Sad life story.
Da Tube Not even close. LP was an awesome back in college who ran behind some of the best lines ever. Don't forget that Ahman Green essentially did the same when he got on the field. LP - the most talented I-back ever at Nebraska. I hate to hear that you got a ten year bid, LP. Stay up, son!
comments added above
The realist in college football
rip big man
How fitting that you choose "Smack My Bitch Up" for a video about Lawrence Phillips. Haha
@shattstar03: Wow, you figured it out. Congrats ;)
Man phillips was a beast! To bad he had to many problems. Didn't he and Scott Frost fight cause coach Frost was trying to protect phillips girlfriend from getting beat
Great college football player ..... not a good person ..... sad and very predictable ending to his life ....hope and will rest in peace ....
Cornhusker to Convict.....good choice.
RIP LP
how appropriate is the music?
Dang.....I miss the homie
I felt so bad for him
haha... cast: lawrence phillips (a host of broken ankles). funny shit. LP was probably(is in my opinion) the most talented back we've ever had here at nebraska. granted i didn't get to see the real old generations of husker football. but i have a hard time believing anyone was more talented way back in the day
Some of the comments reflect some are suffering from Trauma and some seem like a lost cause. May peace find the applicable.
I hope Bob Stoops takes Joe Mixon aside and shows him the stories of Phillips and Maurice Clarett.
I was a huge LP fan but its so obvious that he was on steroids like a lot of Nebraska players back then. Look at him as a freshman and sophomore then look at him as a junior. Regardless the man was filthy and definitely would have won the heisman over Eddie George.
That was my guy. What ashame
@bojipounder Watch this vid again numbnuts, he's got seven TDs in this clip alone that come after contact. LP was AP with extra baggage, and without that he would've smashed the League.
Smack my bitch up tho?? Great music choice for his highlight reel lol
The man had a 168 IQ and freak skills but his demons were bigger and smarter than him.
LP could ball....also had alot of demons
@akweasel
I guess people don't have their own volition, we're all just a product of our surroundings..
@Shnoz2000 that's why he's spending 31 years in jail for doing that. No really he's in jail for 31 years for beating his girlfriend.
And yes. That includes Rozier and Rogers... they won the Heisman but Lawrence was head and shoulders above them. I saw Mike's career. Grear back but Lawrence was BETTER
Song selection is in really poor taste.
He ran Ray Lewis over and told him he had to hit him harder because he was ready to die on the field. He was a great football player.
lol @ Cal Jones being better than LP. Not even close.
Looking at LP's stats is worthless. Those teams were so good that LP was often pulled at halftime.
@spinasweetness: lol, not sure what chord I struck to receive that reply, but you obviously know nothing of LP's life and situation. Take care.
poor LP. . . . . . .
Now that we know more about concussions, could his troubles have been caused by the constant beating and blows to the head?... we didn't know that before, we just called him a thug.. now the NFL is hiding the trauma these athletes go through... just saying.. we got a new movie about it now..
These kids start playing the game in the pop Warner pee wee leagues you fool... "be Gone!!!" stop waiting my time idiot,
such a troubled boy
Lmao nice song choice.
ummmm....maybe change the song? "Smack my bitch up"? really?
A bigger version of Johnny Rodgers.
wowww smh.
Clever use of music.
Calvin Jones was better than LP. LP was good, but overrated. Look at the numbers.
smh
... "smack my bitch up"?.. really?
That was one roided up team.
+Mark Pringle I don't know about that. There strength and conditioning program was second to none during this period of time. This song sucks smh, but great running by L.P.
