Yet another reason why Nintendo should be every gamer's main console during 8th Gen, and probably 9th and 10th Gen. Other console companies are coasting off of the fact that they can force the meme to mass-market consumers that this DLC/F2P business model is the "hardcore" way to go, while shoving advertisements into your console and charging a subscription fee. Meanwhile, Nintendo can fully-fund Takahashi and Soraya's Xeno-games, famous for having been incomplete on Sony systems due to a lack of funding for the original ideas, and Nintendo doesn't need to implement DLC, F2P, subscription fees, or dashboard ads to do it.
Best DLC is always expansion packs. Skyrim had the Dragonborn expansion for only 20 bucks, and that was substantial enough to easily be its own standalone game! THAT is the type of DLC I like. And New Super Luigi U, which was a set of new levels equal in number to the levels of the main game (albeit shorter).
I hate DLC period it sucks the only DLC I like are the fighting games ones but than back in the day to unlock everything you had to beat the game like 10 times
I grew up during the NES and SNES days, so it's really hard for me to shell out money for DLC. During those days, extra content like that was called "unlockables", which meant that in order to get it you would have to have a secret code, or do something special in the game, etc., to "unlock" the extra content. I've ranted about this before, but Black Nerd made it funnier. Thanks Black Nerd, and keep up the good work.
Dragonborn for Skyrim. That was an awesome expansion, adding in a new land and a ton of new features. They also gave us a villain that isn't a sissy dragon you can kill in three shots. Also, you can toss mind control spiders at enemies and fight the Ebony Warrior.
Well, take mario kart for example. If you played all the tracks in mario kart and things are two repetitive for you, then maybe you want a little more. So nintendo released 2 DLC packs for people who liked the game and want more of it. The game itself is full of content and unlockables but if you love the game, it shouldn't take you long to go through all of it. It's a 50 dollar game (least I think it is by now) with DLC that gives you about 40% more content, for 16 dollars if you get them individually. Lot's more playtime on a game you love, without having to pay full price for a sequel. Not that i'm trying to defend DLC, some of it does just suck like what andre was talking about.
The DLC in Just Cause 2 is pretty good. You can get a new plane, some extra guns, and a few vehicles. One of the guns is the air propulsion launcher. The description of it says that it was originally going to be a jet engine, but it was made into a weapon. You can launch cars and people into the air. It's pretty fun to attach someone to a tree with the grappling hook and then use the air propulsion launcher to spin them around the tree. There is also a tiny three-wheeled taxi with a cannon on top of it. Also, some of the DLC is free.
Car companies do the same sort of things. The cheapest version of a car has most of the same features as the luxury version but the internal computer doesn't allow the user to access the features because of how much you paid for it. Sometimes this is also the case with hardware buttons. Heated seats, heated mirrors, dash indicator lights, digital gauges are the worst offenders.
My best was a premium account for TF2. You buy ANY item from the store, even on discount, and you get the free upgrade. Even before, you still get access to all the weapons, updates, and events, but you rarely get hats and have a limited backpack. My premium upgrade was free with my $0.49 Blutsauger gun, which was actually only $0.39 because I was taking it on a trial run beforehand.
I think that Luigi game that was DLC for NSMBU was really cool. It was basically a whole new game and you could either buy it as DLC or buy the physical copy.
Back then, before online gaming and DLC existed, there was such a thing as "shareware". You may recognize that Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, and Doom were all split up into multiple episodes, in which the 1st episodes were "free-to-play", while the others needed to be paid for. Later on, we have things like "demos", in which players would play through a sample of a game to see whether or not it's something that they'd want to buy. Nowadays, we also have a little concept called "crowdfunding".
I have a problem with the pay features in a lot of games especially in games like Halo in my opinion it unbalances the game it gives people you have money to pay to get to the top I hate paywalls expecially when they make the game play feel as if you need to pay to progress there's a lot of those games out there but back to the point these pay features DLCs premium packages Deluxe packages soon there will be probably Platinum packages on top of everything else
They even released a fix-up patch a few months back (for free) which fixes all the glitches, loading times and AI problems that the game had at the time of its release.
Yea. They did make a disc version of it, so it is a completely new game, but you can also download it as a DLC. It's also cheaper than the disc, which is still cheap.
The best I've ever gotten would probably be the Arkham bundle for Batman: Arkham City. It comes with two extra playable characters and about 2 extra skins for each character. It also comes with I think 7 extra skins for the main character.
Chrono Trigger when it was first released in 1995 sold for $79.99 in most stores, which is equivalent to about $122.75 today after inflation. Virtua Racing for the Genesis sold for $99.99 when it was first released, equivalent to $153.45 today. Strider cost 79.99 on release. Same for Street Fighter II. etc Back in the 90's there wasn't a uniform standard for the price of games like today, and the cost would vary depending on what the game was and where you bought it.
Train simulartor 2013. $2500+ aud in DLC. Buying one 20 DLC sometimes doesnt work till you spend almost 40 bucks in another DLC pack and you only find that out after you purchase the 20 dollar single dlc pack.
Best DLC: Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Characters and Stages (EVEN FOR FREE!!) New Super Luigi U Worst DLC: COD Weapon Skins (or however it's called) Clothing for PlayStation Home
So, are we not gonna see a review of DuckTales Remastered or Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows because they're downloadable? You've given so much enthusiasm and coverage about both, I wanna know what you think.
New super Luigi U! 80 new levels for $20. And the original mayo game was so huge that there was no need for more levels unless you really just couldn't get enough, which I couldn't.
On MvC3, Shuma was near-complete with some missing data. Jill was missing a couple of her voice clips and balancing adjustments. SFxT would have been a better example of on-disc DLC.
I have you all beat... Streetfighter x Tekken. 20 DLC characters that were on the disc withheld for $20 and the launch of the psp copy of the game (9 months later). Also a costume pack (also on the disc) which I think was $20 for every character (from streetfighter) and another 20 for the tekken characters.
The worst dlc I had ever seen but not purchased is littlebigplanet costume packs that I have to pay for whenever I could just make them myself for free e.g Marvel Superheroes pack. I have a Hulk costume, an Iron Man costume, a Spiderman costume and a Captain America costume. I aint got dlc so how do I have these costumes? BTW I still have the free DLC packs.
You formulated exactly what DLC has become today, thank u. I like DLC 2 but, like in example super mario 20 dollar for more than 80 levels and characters, intended for players who can't get enough of the game.
In my opinion DLC should work like it does in Fallout and The Elder Scrolls games where you already have a complete game with the ability to do everything and then they slowly add more to it. In Oblivion I had fun doing the main quest and then they make Shivering Isles. There was no mention of that place and there were no clues saying you'd go there so you didn't pay for something you already had you paid for basically a completely new experience and gamplay which is a great way to do it. A bad DLC is for things like fighting games. Wanna know the funniest part I had with Super Smash Bros Melee? Unlocking the characters because I felt accomplished that I earned something and got to use it but when a character is DLC and there isn't anything to unlock is when it gets boring. For one thing I am poor, I don't have money to spend on DLC, another thing is they are asking for like $20 to add one character to a $60 game, seriously!? As the black nerd said, I'll wait for the game of the year.
The e-Reader cards for Super Mario Bros. 3: Super Mario Advance 4 are the best DLC ever. You get new power-ups and new levels not seen in the actual games.
It is good and the hand drawn animations drawing during the ep,s is just beautiful and it takes place between the ep's. the lost ep,s were okay but it sure was fun to bust ryu's nuts. and also i have your icon on a print and it's amazing to :)
I bought ALL the DLC for Disgaea 3 as it came out. By the end it totaled over 80$. Then they released a DLC bundle for 40 not much longer after the final one dropped. After that they had a sale which cut the bundle price to 20$...THEN the Vita version had all that and more included by defult. I was incredibly pissed. I boycotted all the DLC in Disgaea 4 and still have not bought a single piece of DLC for that game. (The Vita version is announced and I'm monitoring it closely to see if it has it
My answer to all of this? Guild Wars 2. Free DLC every two weeks. buy the game once, no monthly subscription Fees, and the game updates with some temporary and some permanent content every two weeks. And it's so fun, it's my favorite video game to boot.
paying for every team in madden is like the best commercial idea ive heard in a while. Yeah its absolute shit for the gamers but you know people would pay shit loads of money for there favorite teams. And it would be such a intimate game experience if you just had one team to manage and could compete against your friends favorite teams.
The New Super Mario Bros. U DLC wasn't bad. One can enjoy NSMB U at its fullest without the DLC, but if you want to play as Luigi and 82 NEW levels, pay $20 for that. Not too bad. Of course, people COULD just get the Wii U bundle that has both of these things for $299, so it's a bit redundant now.
I was really pissed when I had to buy the true ending for Asura's Wrath. Also in BlazBlue Continuum Shift (Regular), there are 3 DLC characters, each is $7. I mean at least when I pay $15 on Street Fighter, I'm getting 5 characters, some stages and some new game mechanics
There is only a single studio that does dlc right and that's Netherrealm Studios. MK9's dlc characters were NOT finished when they released the game, so it was ACTUAL dlc and reasonably priced at that. They seem to be using the same model with Injustice, only releasing ridiculous amounts of dlc characters.
The nWo Pack for WWE 2K14. First of all it didn't make sense to have the nWo in the game because the theme of the game was 30 Years of Wrestlemania & the authentic nWo wasn't a part of Wresltlemania whatsoever. The nWo pack is $9 & consisted of nWo versions of Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, the Giant, Randy Savage, Mr. Perfect, Syxx, & Scott Steiner. Except 5 of these guys are ALREADY in the game so we're basically paying $9 for 2 additional wrestlers & 5 extra attires. & you couldn't buy each wrestler individually like you could in past games. Last year for WWE '13 they had an Attitude Era pack for their Attitude Era themed game & it was more reasonable because the DLC wrestlers aren't duplicates! Also I'd like to add I once bought a costume pack in SSFIV, 5 costume of 10 colors each for just $3. Much better value.
One of the best companies that handles DLC is Overkill. With both Payday: The Hiest and Payday 2, the games were complete at launch. Then months after the game comes out they add a DLC in adding a new hiest [mission] to the game.
But I also like the type of free to play you were talking about because it gives you a little taste of the game, so you can see if its worth your money, like a demo, I hate candy crush style free on play though
When it comes to crappy DLC practices, the first game I think of is Street Fighter X Tekken. 12 additional characters, 2 sets of alt. costumes for those characters, 2 sets of alt. costumes for the release characters, all locked to the disc.
Best DLC's for this generation of gaming GTA LatD and GTA Ballad of Gay Tony made improvements, new character to play as and new story to play as well as new side missions and activties and the game is open world what more could you want in a DLC?!
Best DLC: Solotorobo dlc missions (came with the game for us in the U.S., but FREE at a later date for Japan!) Worst DLC: TF2 weapons for 5.99-12.99 each (thank God I'm not a sucker), or any game where you have to buy multiplayer/co-op, buuuut that usually comes with the game... Unless you get it used.
I think the best DLC I've ever seen was Portal 2. They had a coop mode in the game originally, but later added more levels to the coop mode through DLC. The DLC is something that, well, should have been in the game in the first place, so they offered it FOR FREE. THAT is an excellent example of DLC done right, in my opinion.
+Black Nerd Comedy Do a rant on how some people start out loving a video game character like mario and then suddenly think he is eric cartman by personality
Best DLC: The Undead Nightmare for Red Dead Redemption and the extra cases for L.A. Noire ("The Naked City" case based off one of my favourite Film Noir movies of all time). Worst DLC: All of the CoD map packs and Zombie mode levels. Or DLC that does almost nothing to your game.
MegaMan 10 has some of the best DLC, they have an endless attack mode, 3 levels based on the game boy games, and the ability to play as Bass (pronounced Base)
With the difference that in LOL you have multiple characters to choose that swap every once in a while so you can play some characers and then buy those you like BUT in KI you have 1 character and you have to buy the rest to use them at all (and I am pretty sure there will be a story mode or an arcade mode with endings wich i like so to see all endings you have to pay. This only works if the price is reasonable (2€ per character with 30 characters=average game price but 5€...)
My favorite DLC is for Tales of Xillia, mostly because it's absolutely hilarious. I actually found out about this the other day. You can literally buy.... levels. Not levels you run around in, I mean levels for your characters. I'm not kidding, there are these 5 level and 10 level packs and theres like 2-3 of each. So, by paying a total of at least 15 bucks, I can give all the characters end game stats before even pushing the start button? I dunno whether to be enraged or laughing.
Yet another reason why Nintendo should be every gamer's main console during 8th Gen, and probably 9th and 10th Gen. People, just stop paying for dlc! When the game comes out, that's it. I'm not paying extra
I don't buy dlc's often but when I do I usually wait about two weeks to make sure I really want it
Never bought dlc in my life but I do most my gaming on NES or SNES
I hate DLC period it sucks the only DLC I like are the fighting games ones but than back in the day to unlock everything you had to beat the game like 10 times
Putting content on a disk that you have to pay for to access is essentially stealing.
Part of the reason why I stick with Nintendo.
Oof
Worst DLC: Minecrap Skin Packs Best DLC: Mewtwo Lucas Roy Ryu
Yeah, because minecraft PC has skins for free on this wonderful thing called the Internet. PC is the only way to play games.
I grew up during the NES and SNES days, so it's really hard for me to shell out money for DLC. During those days, extra content like that was called "unlockables", which meant that in order to get it you would have to have a secret code, or do something special in the game, etc., to "unlock" the extra content. best dlc smash bros mewtwo worst dlc xbox minecraft skin packs
those ones too
Best: Smash Bros. DLC FTW
Worst: Every iOS game
I would love to see you rant about the end of Saturday morning cartoons and morning cartoons. Like this had back in the 90's.
Major props and I can't wait for it to come out
This is why I pirate shit.

LOLZ!!!! you made me laugh so hard when you called out Killer Instinct
I ALMOST CRIED WHEN I COULD ONLY PLAY AS RIPTOR IN KILLER INSTINCT. :'(

The yule hat from Fable 3, it took up 12kb of data.
i like how this year for GTA the dlc are free

OH CRAP! did not know about the PR avatars!
downloading now!
That Killer Instinct pun! XD

That's good. I did get hyped when I saw you could fight Ryu and Akuma! xD And, Thanks! Vinyl Scratch is one of my favorites! =D
Rant about Fans from sentai and rangers fighting over who is better
Technically, if somebody gives you an item or if you get a specific item you can trade, but you mostly can't trade or get hats.
The best DLC, the Gold Classics Pack for NSMB2. I got it when it was free!
andre u da man i love black nerd rants
The best I've ever gotten would probably be the Arkham bundle for Batman: Arkham City. It comes with two extra playable characters and about 2 extra skins for each character. It also comes with I think 7 extra skins for the main character.

Strider cost 79.99 on release.
Same for Street Fighter II.
etc
Back in the 90's there wasn't a uniform standard for the price of games like today, and the cost would vary depending on what the game was and where you bought it.
Train simulartor 2013. $2500+ aud in DLC. Buying one 20 DLC sometimes doesnt work till you spend almost 40 bucks in another DLC pack and you only find that out after you purchase the 20 dollar single dlc pack.
This pretty much sums up everything I've felt about DLC for a while now.
Best DLC:
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Characters and Stages (EVEN FOR FREE!!)
New Super Luigi U
Worst DLC:
COD Weapon Skins (or however it's called)
Clothing for PlayStation Home
Best: either Kuja: treno nobleman (PANTS!) or Ice skates for my avatar that I can use to walk on the ground. (WITH ILLOGICAL ICE SKATES, YEAH!)
So, are we not gonna see a review of DuckTales Remastered or Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows because they're downloadable? You've given so much enthusiasm and coverage about both, I wanna know what you think.

I love black nerd
Plus MotD had a pretty intense jumpscare, too XD
The worst dlc I had ever seen but not purchased is littlebigplanet costume packs that I have to pay for whenever I could just make them myself for free e.g Marvel Superheroes pack. I have a Hulk costume, an Iron Man costume, a Spiderman costume and a Captain America costume. I aint got dlc so how do I have these costumes? BTW I still have the free DLC packs.
Fallout's DLC and New Super Mario Bros. U DLC both were done pretty well.
The kick ass DLC known as Minerva's Den for Bioshock 2 is the best.
Magic Duels 13 had the extra decks for DLC, and they gave a whole new experience to the game.
You formulated exactly what DLC has become today, thank u. I like DLC 2 but, like in example super mario 20 dollar for more than 80 levels and characters, intended for players who can't get enough of the game.
My point exactly! And plus how they keep DLC on the disc and Make you pay to use it!

I'm only waiting for the ultra street fighter DLC but at the same time its a ball buster for the alternate costumes pack.
Best DLC I ever payed for was Luigi Wii U. You get 82 new levels (94 exits). So it's basically getting a whole new game for only $30.
I think the Killer Instinct model is stellar, as long as they make a season 2 for characters
Either a topic about the life of Nickelodeon or video game remakes
Best DLC is the GTA 5 FREE DLCs that come with the new updates. Now that's how you keep people coming back for more! GG, Rockstar!
Little Big Planet did DLC correctly, in my opinion. Extra levels and character packs, and even without DLC the game is fun!
I think that to but man i want to be batman and extra extra man its like the powerranger suits too though
Broken Steel is probably one of the best dlc's because the level cap is raised to 30 and after you complete the main game you can continue playing.
The DLC course packs in NSMB2 were actually alright, especially the really hard levels that required great skill to complete.
DLC used to be free secret codes back in the day already in the game
Scorpion from Mortal Kombat? Arkham City Skins for Bats, Joker, and the kitty? I think those are worth it actually.
My answer to all of this? Guild Wars 2. Free DLC every two weeks. buy the game once, no monthly subscription Fees, and the game updates with some temporary and some permanent content every two weeks. And it's so fun, it's my favorite video game to boot.

You should do a rant on in app purchases.
Best DLC: Solotorobo dlc missions (came with the game for us in the U.S., but FREE at a later date for Japan!)
Worst DLC: TF2 weapons for 5.99-12.99 each (thank God I'm not a sucker), or any game where you have to buy multiplayer/co-op, buuuut that usually comes with the game... Unless you get it used.
the Legend of Dead Kel for Kingdoms of Amalur, it gives a new area and between 8-10 hours or there about to complete it
I think the best DLC I've ever seen was Portal 2. They had a coop mode in the game originally, but later added more levels to the coop mode through DLC. The DLC is something that, well, should have been in the game in the first place, so they offered it FOR FREE. THAT is an excellent example of DLC done right, in my opinion.
I bought all the dlc for Tokyo jungle including costumes that look like plushies
Mario Kart 8 Zelda DLC was the best DLC i have ever purchased
Asura's Wrath. I don't have the game but they held back the ending of the game and left you at a cliff hanger until you downloaded the DLC.
MegaMan 10 has some of the best DLC, they have an endless attack mode, 3 levels based on the game boy games, and the ability to play as Bass (pronounced Base)
I've bough a bunch of themes and gimmick for my Xbox Avatar. I don't know why, I only wear the Mass Effect stuff.
Tera is a great example of FTP MMO that delivers amazing gameplay just based off the free version. It's amazing.
to get a towel as an accessory on xbox it is £2.99
With the difference that in LOL you have multiple characters to choose that swap every once in a while so you can play some characers and then buy those you like BUT in KI you have 1 character and you have to buy the rest to use them at all (and I am pretty sure there will be a story mode or an arcade mode with endings wich i like so to see all endings you have to pay.
The best one I bought was the new black ops 2 map pack. And you should do a rant about the new sailor moon anime and why it's delayed.
Sound like that Capcom game called Asura , I never seen so many DLC in a game but it is what it is
