- A side-by-side, shot-for-shot comparison between Black Narcissus (1947) and Black Narcissus (2020), both adapted from the book by Rumer Godden. This side-by-side comparison in intended to show the variety of choices made by two different groups of filmmakers when adapting the same written work over 70 years apart.

Thought the 2020 one was beautifully shot, but they were never going to improve on that shot of sister Ruth when she comes out onto the roof. One of the best shots in cinema
100%. I was shocked to see a shot that evocative in a movie from 1947.
agreed. i'll never forget it. downright terrifying.
My blood froze the first time i saw it.
The original is much better looking. It doesn't have this ugly yellowness or blue-ness to it. Film also makes it look like a painting. Only very few of the new shots were framed better than the original too. Overall, the original looks way better, both in framing and color/light.
Which are the very few shots?
Yeah, Color-Grading-Gimmickry masquerading as style. 😜
Technicolor for the win.
It looks good but the old version has such elegance, it's atemporal and has beautiful work of combining painting into the cinematography
20 seconds and the original kills the 2020 version, how they use shadow to tell the story, it's just a masterpiece
Whilst the Powell and Pressburger is an unassailable masterpiece, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised at just how good the 2020 version was. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the director chose to pay homage to the P&P film with some of her shot choices, which this ideo really highlights.
Never seen either film in my life. They are both beautifully shot. While alot of the scenes in the 2020 version looks great. Every scene in the 40's version looks like a timeless art painting
Great video, as always. I like the 1947 version very much. I think it's a masterpiece!
There's some scene remake did better but overall original is slightly better because of the feels really nailed the atmoshpere of foreign place
Wow, thanx for this, the 1947 version easily and definitely remains one of the ten most beautiful color movies ever made.
Only needs one comment: No comparison: One is a masterpiece, the other is just dreary.
The old movie is much more expressiv. Every turn and every cut tells something. It reminds to the early movies of Fritz Lang. And the sights shown, that are often models of the place or drawn prospects add a lot more fantasy to it and like in a fairytale of stange places and strange people there is a lot more room for your own mind. Although the old movie reminds me to a play in the theatre and the knew one more to a travelogue. The characters are more intense and different to each other and a bit over the top and that makes people relax while enjoying. Today it can be a bit demanding to go to the movies, because there often is to much in any way.
Ive never seen a show nor movie that was shot like this remake it was so beautiful i was so in awe with the way the camera and angles were in this show well done i loved the show and will watch the original aswell cannot wait
Can you do a comparison between the two Animal Farm films? (1954 and 1999 side-by-side)
Next: Dumbo (1941/2019) side-by-side comparison
Asterix and Cleopatra
Godzilla vs Kong
Whedon's Cut vs Snyder's Cut
You simply cant remake a masterpiece
What editing software do you use? It would be gold worth if you could make a video explaining how to do these kinds of split-screen videos where the two videos are placed on a background
Pete’s Dragon (1977-2016 Side by Side)
Can you please do a comparison with the Anna Kareninas of 1997 and 2012? I don’t know why you haven’t gotten around to that yet when you’ve done Orient Express, Little Women and Great Gatsby.
Can you do a comparison of the Tarzan the Ape Man films from 1981, 1959, and 1932?
the 1940s film appears to be a masterpiece, the external scenes are beautiful, impeccable makeup and costumes and excellent acting, the 2020 film appears to be a more lazy film, and I missed the more detailed external scenes!
The difference in the external shots is, of course, that the 2020 shots are all of the real thing. 1947 was filmed almost entirely in the studio, using modes and painted backdrops.
Thank you for this ❤️
I would pay $1,000 to see the original but pay $1,000 not to see the remake.
😂🤣😂🤣😂😅
Nothing beats Deborah Kerr and Kathleen Byron. Also David Ferrar gives a good performance. And Sabu has real presence as the Prince that the remake actor simply doesn't have.
Great story. Which version is the best? 1947 or 2020? According to IMDB, 40s version, rated 7,7 stars out of 10.
Thanks for the comparison!
Can you compare the original year without a Santa Claus to the live action movie with John Goodman?
Do “Charlotte‘s Web”🕸🕷🐷 (1973-2006) comparison PLEASE!!!!
Joseph Romano and also Rudolph the red nosed reindeer (1964-1998)
Make CATS (1998/2019) side-by-side comparison, please
Yeah, I watched the 2019 version and I have a DVD of the 1998 one that I bought at a secondhand shop in Auckland.
What is the music name ?
The 1947 original version is all whats needed! Fair play to the 2020 version though.😊
I’ve never heard of this film or the book. I’ll have to look up both. Thanks!
The original movie is the best. Don’t waste your time on this 2020 bullshit of a disaster. Watch the original.
I haven't seen the 2020 version but, based on this, 6:56, it seems like they skipped remaking one of two of the most iconic shots in film history, the first being the lipstick scene and the second Sister Ruth emerging from the door before trying to push her off the cliff.
While both have their own merits. The classic is visually stunning, atmospheric, and the actresses are so expressive.
Nice video bro.
Thanks!

Matt Skuta Pls Do Mulan (1998/2009/2020): Side-By-Side Comparison
The 2020 one has great shots but it suffers from the one color filter over everything effect. And also from the actors acting realistically instead of theatrically which gives a more subdued instead of dramatic expressions and postures. Sister Ruth in the 2020 suffers from this lack of theatrical expressions. The lack of CGI also means practical effects had to be used which gives it an almost painterly look, which I'm sure many of the BG were as matte paints were used.
I love the original film, but I thought the remake was very enjoyable. A few details were added to the story, which I do not think detracted from the story at all.
If I could make a suggestion, it’d be The Cat in the Hat (1971/2003). While they have their differences, they also have scenes in common, although some of which are in broad strokes. Here are some examples:
1. The kids looking out the window as it rains, looking bored.
2. Their surprise when the Cat shows up.
3. The Cat offering to show them some fun.
4. The Fish telling the kids that the Cat shouldn’t be there.
5. The Cat holding the Fish in the air (although both versions look different).
6. The initial mess made in the house.
7. The Things entering the picture out of the box.
8. Their subsequent chaos.
9. More and more of a mess is made in the house.
10. Mom is on her way home and everyone begins to panic.
11. The Cat leaves a huge mess...
12. ...but comes back to clean it up via a sweeper-like vehicle.
13. Going out the door just as mom walks in.
14. One last shot of the kids.
15. The Cat walking down the street.

Old Movie Screen Very Clear 👌
Matt?" Can you do Dumbo (1941/2019)?"
Never heard this was remade. What a strange choice of a story for a remake.
Do a side by side comparison of the lion king and the lion king remakeboot
Oi eu sou seu fã Eu tenho um negócio para você que são as duas coisas iguais do filme do Chucky 1988 2019
The remake butchered the Sister Ruth turn, it felt so thrown in last minute.
And I was excited when I found out Aisling Franciosi was playing her.
I think the new 2020 Black Narcissus is pretty faithful (no pun intended) to the brilliant 1947 film. It was very atmospheric and evocative, and had stunning scenery!
I'm now eager to watch the original again. Not seen it in decades!
With all the advances in cinematic technology, the 2020 version is nothing short of a copycat version of the original masterpiece. It’s reminds me of that shabby color version remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s "Psycho".
O filme dos anos 40 é infinitamente melhor. Parabéns pelo vídeo, muito bom!
Do Rudolph the red nose reindeer (1964, 1998), and do a comparison with Beginner bibles the naivety(1995), superbook the birth of Jesus(1981, 2012), in the beginning bible stories (1997), and the star (2017) please for The holidays
What About The Cat In The Hat (1971/2003)

It's depressing how badly nocturnal scenes in particular are shot these days. You can barely see the actors' faces in some of those clips. They aim for 'natural' lighting and just end up with mud.
While the 2020 version looks decent, I don't understand what drives someone to remake something so deliberately crafted if they're not going to put as much thought into mis en scene, blocking, color, etc.
Honestly, I think the nuns were cowards for not staying and the Head of the order was a coward for sending Sister Ruth away because she didn't want to deal with her insanity.
2020 looks like a MCU cinematography... 🥸
Next Plant of the apes side by side 1968/2001
NarcisSUS
The 1947 version wins by far.
Wait.. is black narcissus a horror film or just a film of nuns?
i've never ever seen it listed among horror films, and it stands out when compared to other nuns stories. it's totally original.
1947 better
Tv to color in 1947? Wtf...
