Phil’s progressively dropping octaves leading up to that 3rd verse in China’s Cat. The dude understood space and time so well that he never abided by the rules. He manipulated them to create his own textures with bass. Which is a rare thing. Lots of pros emulate his sound and setup to this day because it was hifi bass before there was even a thought of it.

Phil Lesh was, if I remember correctly, a computer science or electrical engineering student who was basically tapped by Jerry & Bob to become their bass player? So yeah his playing is unconventional and has a certain type of logic underlying it that a lot of bass players cannot quite copy (I speak as a lifelong guitarist turned fledgling bass player lol)

With the Grateful Dead it was all about the moment. Nothing planned, never a set list, go where the music takes you. They never played the same song exactly the same way. There was nothing like a Grateful Dead concert. They were the only band I know of that allowed a taping section. People would bring their recording equipment to the concerts and record the show with only encouragement from the band.
Some of the best times ever were at Winterland in San Francisco.

It was like a big commune had set up shop in the parking lots before the shows and it was like a great big fair with thousands of loving cool peaceful people! UNBROKEN CHAIN for sure. I think I've suggested it here. If anyone asks me, What your favorite DEAD song?, it's my personal favorite. And even though the Dead preferred to be live than in studio, I think the studio version is s a knockout. And I saw them perform BOX OF RAIN live for the first time in over a decade in Hampton. Talk about a huge deadhead reaction!

I love it everytime I hear those early 70’s tunes. I can picture my parents hanging around a campfire and them making love and that is why I am here. Thanks to the Grateful Dead.

One of the great things about the Dead is that every performance is different, so if you wanna check out another great China/Rider, check the one from 5/19/74. As for new songs for you, the "Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodleloo" from 5/3/77 and the "Friend Of The Devil" from 12/31/78 are both barn-burners. And you'd definitely dig the Brent years (keyboardist from 1979-1990), so maybe consider the "Deal" from 7/4/89, the "Loser" from 7/7/89, or the "Lost Sailor/Saint of Circumstance" from 3/14/81. I'm digging the reactions, brother! It's like watching a friend discover the Dead in real-time and getting to experience it with them. Keep on truckin'!
