Honestly it's more because of the character, I don't think anybody cared about Katakuri until he stabbed himself, same thing with whitebeard, he had been shown multiple time throughout the show but it was only when Whitebeard showed his love and determination to protect ace and his crew that the people started to like whitebeard and accept him as a badass, that's why a lot of people hate akainu, although he is a total badass everytime he appears the narrative presents him as a cruel antagonist, having killed ace directly and whitebeard indirectly makes him more of an @ssh0l3 to the viewer, above of all since we don't know nothing about him besides his obsession with killing pirates
Katakuri is the perfect villain. The show makes you like him so much that it tears you away from the character you've been watching since the show started and start to focus on if the villain is going to win.
I hope Katakuri and Luffy have a friendly rematch after Luffy becomes the Pirate King. In fact, I'd love if that would be one of the final panels of the series. Highly unlikely, but one can wish.

When WCI arc ended in the manga, I was super sad because it meant the end of Katakuri's greatness. Still I managed to cheer myself up with the fact that he would soon appeared in anime and the moment he did, for the very first time in years, I was enjoying OP anime over OP manga on weekly basis. But now WCI is ending in anime as well... and there is nothing to fill in the void.
