  • Today on the Brittney Reacts Show we reviewed the new Japanese film Godzilla Minus One Written and Directed by Takashi Yamazaki. I haven't seen many Godzilla movies. I've seen Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire but Godzilla minus one is by far the best monster movie I have ever seen.

One of my favorite parts is when Noriko comes home to tell that she got an office job. Koichi is all hurt and says “Don’t I make enough money for us?” I felt that was the first time for sure you realize that, despite refusing a romantic relationship, he’s come to feel like they’re his family and he’s not hoping to get rid of them someday.

The most amazing thing about this movie is how it has transcended the traditional Godzilla fan base and seems to appeal to such a wider audience than in the past. There are so many more layers to it than most people who haven't seen it would realize.

I was fully prepared to dislike the character of Sumiko when she first appeared and berated Koichi for not fulfilling his "duty" as a kamikaze pilot. Later, when she gave up her stash of rice to feed Akiko, I realized that I'd judged her too harshly and that she was in grieving for her children. As the movie progressed... watching her care for Akiko as Noriko went to work and Koichi dealt with Godzilla... I came to have a great deal of respect for her.

Like many Japanese people at the time, she was looking for someone to blame in the wake of the fire bombings that destroyed her life around her - the pilot that failed in his duty (a duty to die in a suicide attack at that) made for a convenient target for her frustrations. It’s only after the child entered the picture that she began to see him as a person again because she had just lost her own children: as she bonded with the child, she came to care for her guardian as well - by the time he left the child with the envelope of cash to her care, she realized that she didn’t want to see him die (a complete reversal of her initial reaction to his return home).

My theater cheered loudly twice...first when they showed Koichi's parachute and then when they revealed Noriko in her hospital bed. No one wanted them to die. I can't say the same for any of the human characters in the Monsterverse universe. You touched on a lot of important points, thank you. Something I caught onto was that, this is a society during a post war period of time, where they lost. A very proud honorable people who lost in disgrace, and were traumatized, not only by two h-bombs, but Tokyo was basically destroyed by a campaign of fire bombings that killed 200,000 citizens, and left 2 Million homeless. So, the team ups, and the citizens uniting... These are even more important to Japanese post war society, because they are rebuilding from the time of the Emperor, from the time when they were being sent to die, for nothing. The film gives us tiny clues about all this, but for audience members who are not as familiar with that time period, and the culture of Japan at the time, it is just another layer for some to relate to easier. Great review, BTW, thanks do much!!!!

That scene was actually at the time of the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake. Of course no Godzilla. It is tsunami. Ten people from the three storey building have warned the people of the city disaster. The young woman announcer has been transmitting the tsunami to the end in real time by a huge speaker installed on the roof and wire communication. It was still believed that this building was safe at this time. The broadcasting room was on the third floor. This tsunami episode is very famous in Japan. There are a lot of scenes that the director got inspiration from the actual tsunami picture.

By far better than ‘All’ the one hundred million dollar plus budget ‘trash’ coming out of Hollywood within the past decade or more. Thank you for your honest and loving review of the work. I felt the difference between fake reviewers who give negative reactions that seem like they misunderstand the details of the work in order to promote their own high position.
The comments below are almost the same as comments made on other review videos, but I hope you will consider them as supplementary material. As for the wartime story, it is intended to examine the degree to which it is reproduced in the movie, and is not written as a story with trivial malice or grudge.
I'm 55 years old Japanese. This is a story about my friend's (66 year old) father (he passed away a few years ago at the age of 90).
My friend's father, Mr. T, told me about his war experience.
At the end of the war, the area around Ginza, where this movie is set, was bombed. Mr. T had come to Tokyo to take his university entrance exams, but just as he was there, he was involved in an accident that caused Yurakucho Station (located behind the theater that Godzilla destroyed with his tail in the movie) to collapse. Most of the people who had been nearby died instantly. A Japanese officer nearby was still saluting, his upper and lower body torn in half. His mother, who was nearby with her baby in her arms, had disappeared. Several students nearby were alive but buried in the rubble. But even decades after experiencing that hellish scene, Mr. T said, ``I never felt lucky to have survived that place.''
I watched this movie wondering how much hell there was.
It's true that it's a movie, so there are a lot of convenient scenes.
However, when a disaster actually occurs, things that are obvious, for better or worse, do not always come true. For example, it was located not far from the epicenter of the explosion in Hiroshima, and although the building was not very sturdy, some people were able to survive unharmed because it was in the shadow of the building. According to survivors, people across the street instantly turned into charred corpses, others disappeared as if they had evaporated, and some went missing.
I have heard that while there were many tragedies such as wars and disasters, there were also some incredible miracles.
Interesting details about this movie. The hospital that appears at the end is a Christian hospital because the nurses' clothes and the interior of the hospital rooms are unique. Godzilla uses his atomic breath to counterattack the tank's gunfire, blowing up the National Diet Building along with the tank, and the reflected blast from there blows away Ginza. People near Nichigeki were blown down Harumi-dori toward Kachidoki Bridge and Tsukiji Fish Market. In fact, St. Luke's Hospital, which was established in 1901, is located a little further away from Kachidoki Bridge in that direction. This hospital is known as the place where many people were taken during the Aum Shinrikyo subway sarin attack. It's a very realistic setting.
I would like to add one more piece of information that I remembered.
My friend's father, Mr. T, is from Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture, and his classmate at the same elementary school was Haruo Nakajima, who served as the suit actor for the first Godzilla in 1954.
A few years before the war began, when the two were in elementary school, Nakajima ate Mr. T's bento without permission and they got into a big fight. Mr. T. remembers that scene well, and said that every time he saw Godzilla, he fondly remembered Mr. Nakajima, who stole his bento and ate it. ``Mr. Nakajima was a strange person,'' Mr. T said, but he heard that in his later years his Alzheimer's disease progressed, and while in the hospital he was often plagued by hallucinations of being engulfed in air raid flames. When I heard that story, I was horrified by the fact that even after more than half a century, the war experience remains with us until we die.
Sorry for the long long post.
I hope Google Translate reflects it correctly.

As one of the few huge fans of Godzilla King of the Monsters I didn't think another G movie would come close, but this one surpassed it. I loved a lot of the older movies with the big monster fights and of course the 1954 original, but Minus One did something that all the others failed to do by merging practical effects, CGI, story, and believable human characters in a way that no other Kaiju movie has done before. I saw that someone in your chat mentioned that they weren't sure if they would see it because Godzilla has been around since her grandma was watching movies; do yourself a favour and skip the Hollywood bullshit movies playing right now and go and see this. I'm very happy that the younger generation of movie geeks enjoyed it! 😂 Its definitely refreshing, and the "surprise nga!" refreshing movie! Not the best ever, but dang sure worthy, to be considered in a category as such. On a smaller budget that those "other" big companies had, and created movies with very lackluster results. Godzilla Minus One, rocked it. And rocked the name and 70 year name VERY WELL❤!

I remember after watching Godzilla vs Kong talking about how we need another solo horror film that makes you afraid of Godzilla and actually take him seriously rather than having you root for him or the monster he’s battling, I really wanted a film where it was just him against mankind, killing everyone in his path and we finally got that, thanks to Takashi Yamazaki, it’s the Godzilla film I have been hoping to see for so long, it was absolutely brilliant, the action with scenes Godzilla were intense as fuck, I saw it in RPX and I felt every footstep, roar and explosion and the atomic breath scene was just astonishing, I felt so much for the humans, I was on the verge of tears for Koichi and I felt terrible for the adopted daughter Akiko when she started sobbing, it just shows you how much of a horrible monster Godzilla was. Toho did a phenomenal job with this movie, it left me in awe.

The beauty in Godzilla is the fact that the first movie came out 9 years after what happened to Hiroshima, and I highly recommend Godzilla 1954 it's a grim movie a cautionary tale about nuclear warfare & keeping in mind that it was still new at the time.
I read somewhere that many people praised it and many others thought it was too soon and disrespectful to the victim, I hope no one thinks it's disrespectful but I can't throw my hat in that ring.

I just kinda saw it on a whim and it's basically my favourite movie of the year. Not the most technical or deep but the heart in this movie is so compelling. And sitting with character that's a kamikaze pilot and lives with guilt is such a unique perspective. The depiction of PTSD is so good yet equally so frustrating and heartbreaking. You kinda keep thinking come on man just comfort the child yet he can't, and he does want to yet he feels so fundamentally broken he can't allow himself to be human.

The acting, writing, pacing, and beats are so harmonious. Nothing is forced. There's no forced emotions or action. There was no forced relationship or flirting. Nothing is overdone. Action, drama, horror, relationships, a little bit of comedy, none of the forced tension or adversity we get from Captain Marvel or the cheap laughs and quips. When the little girl cries because mom isn't coming home it hurt to watch.
Another thing I really enjoyed about the movie is everyone had to constantly change their plans because Godzilla ruins them. When they're clearing mines they come across a damaged ship and they're ordered to take care of it. Little do they know Godzilla is lurking below the waters. Then Godzilla bursts out of the water and they abandon their mission.
I'm watching the movie again today with another group of friends. Easily the best movie I've seen a while.
