the problem that I have with this ending. it kills all the major storylines. askeladds quest to become king, dead. canutes quest against the king, dead. thorfinns quest against askeladd, dead. well.... if there is not a second season, I'm pleased with this ending. if there will be a season 2, I'll watch it but I'm afraid it could be boring.

I mean, to let you in on a secret (but not really): Wit isn't making the last season of Attack on Titan. Its a different studio. They are working (or almost done) with the sequel movie of Vinland. Hopefully season 2 will be greenlit soon.
finally understand why Askeladd never told Thorfinn who hired him to murder his father. Askeladd understood what type of life Thors wanted for himself and his family. He understood that Thors wanted his son to live a life away from the battlefield. Askeladd understood though Thors wish wouldn't be granted right away. He knew Thorfinn will seek revenge on the one that murder his father. After all, Askeladd went down the path of revenge on his own father in the past. He also knew that if he told him who actually hired him to murder his father, he will probably go after that person instead. So Askeladd allowed Thorfinn to follow him like a little wolf, craving for his flesh. He allowed him to become one of men. He decided to become the villain that Thorfinn desperately needed. He technically raised Thorfinn to be the man he is right now. Of course, Askeladd also saw Thorfinn as a useful tool to accomplish his goals, no denying that. Always using a honorable duel to keep Thorfinn in check. But I feel like Askeladd always wanted a better future for Thorfinn deep down. He saw Thorfinn as a son in the end.
Askeladd deeply respected Thors and his philosophy, and as a result, he also chose to walk the same path as Thors. Askeladd, one of the most egocentric and pragmatic character in the show performs the most selfless act in the series. His sacrifice intended to save what he valued the most (Wales, Canute) parallels with Thors' sacrifice which was intended to save his son and his people. Askeladd may not have been the man of same calibre as Thors, but he ultimately finished what Thors couldn't: Correcting Thorfinn's misguided attitude and bringing him back into the light.
I cried for the first time in anime in a long time... This made me remember how emotional I got when I read it in the manga. Such an amazing adaptation of this manga... God bless the people that made this posible. And good reaction.

The Alchemist sometimes it gets to the point where I can’t even call characters like that villains. I classify characters like him as antagonist, only because he opposed the main character Thorfinn. Tbh, it’s complex characters like Askeladd, that make me love anime.‼️💯

Has ALSO done some truly inhumane things throughout what we've seen of the series, such as raiding villages for his own benefit, and ALLOWING his men to RAPE women (the latter is shown in the manga). The reason why I say Askeladd is a good villain is because he isn't one dimensional and doesn't do these things for the sake of being evil, but usually has an ulterior motive behind his actions, which is usually something that is motivated by a goal that a lot of people can relate to, which makes him feel human. That being said, it doesn't change the fact that a lot of the horrible deeds he does is STILL done for his own selfish reasons, which to me, makes him a villain. And yeah Lance Isaac, complex characters like these are why I love anime too!

@@lapis3965 thats the thing though, in a world like vinland almost every character can be seen as a villain because they've all done horrible things. if this was a shounen its easier to classify askeladd as a villain because hes clearly the evil one doing bad things compared to the main characters
There's bound to be other great characters. So I'm glad Vinland Saga is able to kill off great characters without hurting itself. They made us love Thors in only 4 episodes and Askeladd was even better although he had more screentime. Canute had a huge character change and Thorkell is more than just a brute. Feel like Thorfinn is gonna be a much better character next season. This season he was mainly just a tortured soul seeking vengeance. Excited to see the teased characters.

Honestly speaking, Askeladd carried the first season and turned it into a masterpiece. If it was just Thorfinn screaming how much he wanted to get revenge, not many would like it, apart from the carnage and great animation. Askeladd was the best character in this series. He is so well-written and not many can compare to him. I remember reading the scene of his death in the manga and just tearing up a bit but watching his death in the Anime was hard to bear and I ended up bawling.

Keep in mind this Anime's Manga was made in around 2005 , it makes sense for this to be Anime of the Year because Back then , Storylines were better than how they are nowadays. But it doesn't mean I'm saying these storylines are bad It's just that these Storylines hit harder than most Anime do and so it's what makes Anime like these Special.
imo anime stories are just getting bad, look at the popularity of harem isekai cheat or whatever, the story is not good as older anime, the main characters did not work hard to be the strongest because he already got godly skills, and then finally the mc will got his harem and then insert ecchi or R-18 scene there (in light novel) (not all isekai anime is bad but this is what i see from the majority and i still respected the author because he/she got skill to write something).
I mean don't me wrong Vinland Saga is amazing, but I think you might just have a bit of a case of nostalgia blindness. Moe and harem trash and simple shonen have been a part of anime's history since the 80's, so it's really nothing new to be complaining about.

You go on about killing the best character of the show, but his existence caged in Thorfinn. Askeladd was an obstacle to Thorfinn's development. When he finally died, he freed Thorfinn from the vicious cycle of revenge. Now it's time for Thorfinn to become the best character of the show. Can't wait for the movie continuation. I really hope they to do a good job but it's gonna be difficult to adapt a 45 chapters arc in a 2 hour movie. I'm worried they'll cut too much. Or maybe they'll adapt the first part of the Farmland arc? Dunno.

Such a powerful quote, coming from Askeladd, at that moment. Thorfinn's sole goal is life was to defeat Askeladd in a duel. Now that this chance is wasted and was stolen from him, he just has no more purpose in life anymore. He's lost and abandon to his own fate. It's like a mega reality check and it just broke him.

Initially was concieved by him due to a requirement posed by funders that a movie requires a source material for it to be funded. So Miyazaki authored the manga of Nausicaa to meet that requirment. Now this manga ran from February 1982 to March 1994, passed a decade after the film was produced. So the manga covers way more ground than the movie itself. The core of this series is similar to Princess Mononoke for in the aspect of environmentalism, war and the extent man would go to achieve their goals. So Mononoke maybe the distillation of the core lessons he has learned illustrating Nausicaa into an animated feature. But, Nausicaa is way more than just that. If you want to see Miyazaki traverse all of his own ideals, the things he fancies and the darkest tendencies of his in a raw and uncensored manner. That's Nausicaa. You'll get your dog fights, unorthodox aviation vehicles, bloody battles, cavalry battles too and so much more. Not many people realise how much of a military and war geek he is, but you get to experience that side of him as creator. But, also witness his own philosophical ideals of what mankind really is, and what we must burden. To me, this narrative is almost religious, well a genesis of a religion to be exact. But for you to understand that aspect, you have to experience it yourself.

The world that this story takes place is thousands of years after technological civilization has doomed themselves and left the planet in a state of desolution. The oceans are poisoned and the land polluted, covered in dense toxic fungal forests. Where mankind has been fighting for what little livable lands left. The protagonist of this tale is Nausicaa, a princess of the Valley of Wind, a small and rural nation state surrounded by lush nature they themselves have kept and guarded against the encroaching toxic hellscape. Due to this nations hardened but nuturing nature, Nausicaa has grown to be a strond willed and kind girl, fitting caliber for a ruler of such state. But her life gets thrown into turmoil due to obligations posed by larger national entities requiring this small state to join their wars. So you follow her journey through this war striken realm and find out why and how this world came to be. Ps. also this story actually has the best two princesses ever depicted in fiction in my opinion. They aren't just some trophy wives to be won or used in political marriages. But actualized people with political authority, who strive to help their own nations with power gained not from birth right but their own merits and caliber. Goddamn I love this story so much.

Askeladd was a such Legend, this was faithful to the manga and even a lot better, Thorfinn now will be moulded so we will see their steps to become a True Warrior and why it is called Vinland Saga, some people won't accept the changes of new Season 2, a big development will drop into Thorfinn, the next best character is the guy from the boat, the way Thorfinn will be now its the best thing to the story, I gonna say that because some people are interested only in blood and Vikings killing others, if "you" like things as that, you need to be treated and take medicament...don't see that as a insult, I just don't understand these haters... I've seen all of this in volume 4 of Vinland Saga's manga and maaaan... That was one of the saddest moment of my entire career as manga reader/collector. I felt like I was hit in the face by a depression & sadness wave. I'd put volume aside and after closing my eyes and covering my face in hands I stayed like this for about 10 min in silent. I just needed a moment... And after seeing your tears I know for sure that we understand each other. That bastard Askeladd is one of my favorites charasters

Just so people know, a friend of mine here in Sweden lives near a runestone raised to Olof, he wrote that he went and raided with Thorkell and king Knut (Canute in English) in England and got paid. He has other runestones raised here as well- probably died a rich man when he returned. Yes these people existed, and yes they paid vikings even in Sweden to join them for the raids/wars. ofc that isnt strange since they shared religion, language and same ethnicity - denmark,sweden and norway back then. Askeladd however is mentioned in viking age, but hard to tell what he is based on, sometimes real people get almost legendary status, like the viking ragnar who raided paris and suddenly was part of x,y and z adventures and magical events.

I got so hype seeing the characters at the end. Was a little confused? They seem to be teasing two of the characters too early? Only our best boy at the end in introduced during the Farland arc.
Catch up on the manga until where the anime ends (around mid way through book 4) at the very least. i just did that today and it was such a different experience from the anime that i highly recomend!
The mark of a well-written tragic death is that you really feel the loss of that character, their potential and how they could have continued to impact the story had they lived. Typically when a main character dies, it's the end of the story, but this is just the beginning. Askeladd stole the show so hard that he had to die to make room for the growth of other characters. It also provides a sense of completion to this first arc of the story. It makes you wonder if the rest of the story can live up to this high of a bar, but I want to find out.

Sweyn put Askeladd in a bad position. Last episode Sweyn was planning to attack Askeladd's home country Wales and gave Askeladd an ultimatum to kill Canute in order to save it. This put Askeladd in a bad position because he Canute to put an end to the viking era so he needed to get rid of the king in order for Canute to take power. Askeladd didn't care about living to see the end, but he wanted to ensure both the safety of his home and make sure Canute has the chance to change the world, if him dying could make it happen he accepted that as fate.

It's just that these Storylines hit harder than most Anime do and so it's what makes Anime like these Special.
imo anime stories are just getting bad, look at the popularity of harem isekai cheat or whatever, the story is not good as older anime, the main characters did not work hard to be the strongest because he already got godly skills, and then finally the mc will got his harem and then insert ecchi or R-18 scene there (in light novel) (not all isekai anime is bad but this is what i see from the majority and i still respected the author because he/she got skill to write something).

I mean don't me wrong Vinland Saga is amazing, but I think you might just have a bit of a case of nostalgia blindness. Moe and harem trash and simple shonen have been a part of anime's history since the 80's, so it's really nothing new to be complaining about.

I agree, the 19 episode of KNY was fantastic but this one impacts in a deeper way, like the episode of Canute's revelation.

there is an awesome scene with Thorkell in season 2 when someone tries to use him.
You go on about killing the best character of the show, but his existence caged in Thorfinn. Askeladd was an obstacle to Thorfinn's development. When he finally died, he freed Thorfinn from the vicious cycle of revenge. Now it's time for Thorfinn to become the best character of the show. Can't wait for the movie continuation. I really hope they to do a good job but it's gonna be difficult to adapt a 45 chapters arc in a 2 hour movie. I'm worried they'll cut too much. Or maybe they'll adapt the first part of the Farmland arc? Dunno.

Such a powerful quote, coming from Askeladd, at that moment. Thorfinn's sole goal is life was to defeat Askeladd in a duel. Now that this chance is wasted and was stolen from him, he just has no more purpose in life anymore. He's lost and abandon to his own fate. It's like a mega reality check and it just broke him.

Initially was concieved by him due to a requirement posed by funders that a movie requires a source material for it to be funded. So Miyazaki authored the manga of Nausicaa to meet that requirment. Now this manga ran from February 1982 to March 1994, passed a decade after the film was produced. So the manga covers way more ground than the movie itself.
The core of this series is similar to Princess Mononoke for in the aspect of environmentalism, war and the extent man would go to achieve their goals. So Mononoke maybe the distillation of the core lessons he has learned illustrating Nausicaa into an animated feature. But, Nausicaa is way more than just that. If you want to see Miyazaki traverse all of his own ideals, the things he fancies and the darkest tendencies of his in a raw and uncensored manner. That's Nausicaa. You'll get your dog fights, unorthodox aviation vehicles, bloody battles, cavalry battles too and so much more. Not many people realise how much of a military and war geek he is, but you get to experience that side of him as creator. But her life gets thrown into turmoil due to obligations posed by larger national entities requiring this small state to join their wars. Ps. also this story actually has the best two princesses ever depicted in fiction in my opinion. They aren't just some trophy wives to be won or used in political marriages. But actualized people with political authority, who strive to help their own nations with power gained not from birth right but their own merits and caliber. Goddamn I love this story so much.

Askeladd was a such Legend, this was faithful to the manga and even a lot better, Thorfinn now will be moulded so we will see their steps to become a True Warrior and why it is called Vinland Saga, some people won't accept the changes of new Season 2, a big development will drop into Thorfinn, the next best character is the guy from the boat, the way Thorfinn will be now its the best thing to the story, I gonna say that because some people are interested only in blood and Vikings killing others, if "you" like things as that, you need to be treated and take medicament...don't see that as a insult, I just don't understand these haters...
The manga, anime are a amazing masterpiece...you can learn a lot just by this story...
I've seen all of this in volume 4 of Vinland Saga's manga and maaaan... That was one of the saddest moment of my entire career as manga reader/collector. I felt like I was hit in the face by a depression & sadness wave. I'd put volume aside and after closing my eyes and covering my face in hands I stayed like this for about 10 min in silent. I just needed a moment... And after seeing your tears I know for sure that we understand each other. That bastard Askeladd is one of my favorites charasters

Just so people know, a friend of mine here in Sweden lives near a runestone raised to Olof, he wrote that he went and raided with Thorkell and king Knut (Canute in English) in England and got paid. He has other runestones raised here as well- probably died a rich man when he returned. Yes these people existed, and yes they paid vikings even in Sweden to join them for the raids/wars. ofc that isnt strange since they shared religion, language and same ethnicity - denmark,sweden and norway back then. Askeladd however is mentioned in viking age, but hard to tell what he is based on, sometimes real people get almost legendary status, like the viking ragnar who raided paris and suddenly was part of x,y and z adventures and magical events.
Yourl should definitely read the Manga, its MINDBLOWING, because of the art, the story and the development of the characters! The manga isn't finished yet, but it's just SO INCREDIBLE!!!!

I got so hype seeing the characters at the end. Was a little confused? They seem to be teasing two of the characters too early? Only our best boy at the end in introduced during the Farland arc.
Catch up on the manga until where the anime ends (around mid way through book 4) at the very least. i just did that today and it was such a different experience from the anime that i highly recomend!

The mark of a well-written tragic death is that you really feel the loss of that character, their potential and how they could have continued to impact the story had they lived. Typically when a main character dies, it's the end of the story, but this is just the beginning. Askeladd stole the show so hard that he had to die to make room for the growth of other characters. It also provides a sense of completion to this first arc of the story. It makes you wonder if the rest of the story can live up to this high of a bar, but I want to find out.

Sweyn put Askeladd in a bad position. Last episode Sweyn was planning to attack Askeladd's home country Wales and gave Askeladd an ultimatum to kill Canute in order to save it. This put Askeladd in a bad position because he Canute to put an end to the viking era so he needed to get rid of the king in order for Canute to take power. Askeladd didn't care about living to see the end, but he wanted to ensure both the safety of his home and make sure Canute has the chance to change the world, if him dying could make it happen he accepted that as fate.

by then the king would be anticipating and prepared for an assassination, thus greatly lower the probability of success.
Not only would the king be expecting an assassination attempt, but it wouldnt help canute. Killing the king during peace talks gives canute the chance to please the people
