    The owl is an Asian Barred Owlet aka Cuckoo Owlet (Glaucidium cuculoides), one of a group of "pygmy owls" native to both the Old and the New World. All have poorly developed facial disks for sound based hunting, and rely more on vision when hunting than most owls. Despite their small to tiny size, they have very powerful feet for their size, and unlike many other small owls, rarely eat insects, but prey almost entirely on birds and mammals, including victims considerably larger than themselves. They start hunting well before sunset and often hunt during the day. The covering with the wings is "mantling"; it braces the raptor against struggling prey, and conceals victims from opportunistic competitors while simultaneously making the raptor look larger and more dangerous to those who would challenge it for prey, or to songbirds mobbing the predator. To add to this effect, many Glaucidium owls have fake eyespots on the back of their head (these are lacking in the Asian Barred Owlet).

      Crows are social birds almost like a monkey versus a mountain lion. The owl can only take that opportunity to kill those enemy birds if it keeps them from alerting nearby crows and bringing a swarm. This turf war is thousands of years old he knows what he’s doing. It’s why he made sure he killed the other baby first even though it only wanted one I bet.

    Seems everyone eats doves ,,, Birds eat each others young heck if you have Ravens around they will get into birdhouses, if there is a clean out opening they will figure out how it opens . They will wait until the babies are what too them is good eating size and open it up .. Most often they are feeding them to their own young..

    Always thought Owls were nocturnal, apparently not

    • @motherlandbot6837
      @motherlandbot6837 3 роки тому +2

      Most owls will hunt during daylight hours when feeding young or when food is scarce. Owls in extreme northern latitudes, such as Snowy Owls and Great Gray Owls, also hunt during summer days because nights are very short during that season in the far north.
      Owls appear to have more limited color vision than strictly diurnal birds, but all owls can see very well in the daylight, while most diurnal birds are completely helpless in darkness (a failing that owls and predatory mammals routinely exploit).
      Even the more strictly nocturnal owls (Eastern Screech Owls, Barn Owls) are actually semi crepuscular, they are most active from dusk until before midnight, and resume activity a few hours before dawn. Predation by larger owls and hawks also limits and selects against daytime activity by small to medium sized owls.
      If you missed my other post here, pigmy owls (Glaucidium spp.), such as this Asian Barred Owlet, are routinely active during the day, as they rely largely on other birds for food, but don't have the highly developed adaptations for hunting by sound that most owls have. Glaucidium owls also don't have the sound muffling edges to their flight feathers that most owls have. As a general rule, non Australian owls without highly developed facial disks are more likely to be active during the day, as these facial disks function like parabolic reflectors to channel sounds to the owl's ear openings. Owls dwelling in tropical forests are also generally somewhat less adapted to hunt by sound (they don't have the asymmetrical ear openings of many temperate and subarctic and arctic owls, even when they have well developed facial disks), because the constant loud dusk, nighttime, and predawn chorus of insects, treefrogs, etc. in these forests versus the nighttime silence of taiga forests and tundra make hunting primarily by sound less efficient.
