Coffee filters and then boiling is probably the easiest and most readily available way to purify water. Also, as a combat engineer one of our many task was water supply, basically to provide potable (fit to drink) water for a brigade. The ratio of what we used (calcium hypochlorite) to water to sterilise it is 4-6 parts per million and this was after filtering to remove any particulates.
It's worth keeping some 5 gallon jugs on hand. My family ended up renting a water cooler for what amounts to a pittance, and we've usually got roughly ten bottles on hand at any given time. Now we drink more water than we used to and we always have a buffer on hand that has proven to be really useful during hurricane season.
Big brain editing out the audio of the teaspook misspeak lol Also I recently saw a cool video of a guy cleaning water by allowing it to drip down into another container through a cloth draped over the sides
You can actually use a tree branch to perfectly purify water. Look that technique up. You use the branch as a filter (as you are aware water moves through plants, slowly) and it sucks away all impurities. _Nothing else is needed._ Look it up, it's only recently been discovered.
The sun, another great reason to sun dry clothing. I try to dry my sweaty socks in the direct sun. Why do jungles suck....canopies blocking UV light. Rinse clothing( get the skin flakes out), dry in the sun.

The sun method uses the suns heat to turn the water into condensation. Dig a hole, add water into the hole, place your container you carried the water in in the center of the hole. Place cling wrap or other clear, malleable, thermally conductive material over the hole. Weigh down the very center of the cling wrap with a rock or other object so it creates a slope on the bottom side. The sun’s heat turns the water into condensation. This condensation then collects on the angled cling rap, falling into the cup placed in the center. This is a process called distillation. So in short, it takes about as long as it takes for the water in the hole to evaporate, collect as condensation, and all drip back into the vessel. Then it is safe to drink.

5.25% solution of sodium hypochlorite is standard household bleach- 8% is industrial strength and 12% is pool chlorine- it contains sodium hydroxide and water along with CL2 it is the most prevalent chemical compound to disinfect water
Hey Tim, Long Time Fan Brother! I've got a question about the Bleach. Now Days, a lot of Bleaches are making an "Anti-Splash" formula of their bleaches. My question is: Do you know if it’s safe to use this thicker kind of bleach when disinfecting water? I'm meaning, Can this more Viscous version be used the same way you would with regular bleach? Thanks Man...
Other videos say use only Clorox regular, not scented or thick versions. Was thinking it was 5 drops to a gallon or 1/8 the like Tim says, and be sure if it's in a bottle to clean/treat around the top and threads. 24hr set time for bleach. If still bleachy smell when pour in a glass, you can pour it back and forth from glass to glass and the smell disappears. Remember like another poster said though that bleach deteriorates over time, so if you don't have a fresh bottle of bleach at home then it may have lost some of its potency. I'm assuming in an emergency if it's treated, especially with chlorine that swimming pool water would be okay. You can also get water out of a toilet tank, or drain water heater if within a few days.
Tim your buddies over at Nosler just did a collaboration with Grayl for a super efficient, compact personal water filtration system. It looks like an ordinary metal water bottle, but the outer shell is the collector and you just fill, press, and drink. The system filters clean water into the inner sleeve and you are good to go. The outer shell is also titanium, and can be used for boiling in addition to collecting. 300 presses per filter.
Love it! Thanks. Side note, gas burners are great. Can work when the power is out, but I highly recommend induction, way faster and more precise temperatures. Gas is relatively safe, but you can have a gas leak, things can drop in the flame and catch fire, and it takes a lot longer to boil water or get things up to temperature.
Thanks, Tim! As always, important information. It would be great to see you do something with TA Outdoors from the UK. He does a lot of outdoor survival builds.
I think it is important to practice this before it is ever needed. Someone trying to remember back to a video and how much Bleach to add is risky Swallowing a double dose of bleach could have long term health effects. In the 1990s it was easier to find straight Bleach. Now it is hard to find with scented Bleach and bo splash gel Bleach. No idea what happens if you swallow water treated with these variants but it can't be good. Gallons of Bleach off the shelf is not made with purified water and so it is likely to contain various chemical traces I know that for well water treatment there are dry chlorine pellets made for treating ground water for human consumption No direct hands on experience, but the equipment dispenses chlorine pellets after lab testing guides the professional what quantity is required for the machine to dispense I believe major back packing stores carry chlorine pellets also Talk to an experienced water treatment equipment dealer in a state with lots of wells for their advise
Spores produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum are heat-resistant and exist widely in the environment, and in the absence of oxygen they germinate, grow and then excrete toxins, so you can’t entirely disinfect water by boiling if these spores are present.
You may not use the same word Sir, but I know you've heard of the wicking method to get most nasty junk from your water! This is a method we can use if we need a hands off method, due to the many other tasks and jobs that must be tackled at the same time! I'd love to know, how many of you guys out there know this method, or even what I'm talking about at all? Also, if you do know but you have a different name for it, I’d love to know that name. Thanks guys!
