Falling in love with someone you can't be with. Hating the pain of missing them, but not wanting to lose the feeling of loving them. This song is the anthem for how I feel
And you want to hate them for it, but still love them and forgive And you can't stop loving even if you wished to or could have a chance at it, ever since the first moment you fell in love with them
I'm so pleased to have found that. I was in that room when he played that night. I'd never heard the Magnetic Fields before and bought the album on the back of that performance. I always preferred the version I'd heard first and never thought I'd hear it again. Quite touched.
It will create a discharge of energy that will endow everyone in a 315 meter radius with prodigious musical ability that will nonetheless prove transitory.
Man this lyrical piece is so rich and heavy yet so soothing. He was one of the greatest of all time but sadly he couldn't gather a wide spread audience
Chills down my spine ALWAYS listening to Stephen Not just because I love his works and his artistic projects and music, truly but because I lost my father in my mid teens and by some unfathomable coincidence from the Universe, speaking through him, he has that very rare to find alike but in this very case the same voice timber, tone and registers my father had, and this touches even deeper than normal what his good vocals singing his own work would do anyway. It is too much some times to bear however I would not like to stop listening, but because it distracts and fully derails me off just by the echoes of someone so long ago gone.. resurrected in such unexpected and deep ways. It's beyond too guilty pleasure, it moves me in more ways than most may feel from his performances. It had to be such heavy weight as Merritt, did it had to be so? I am not complaining, I'm glad it was someone out there that could and that I came to hear, however I gave it up years after and never thought it could be, but finding this makes it even more than a Public performance pleasure it comes closer to me. Like if dad was singing again his funny songs of his own childhood. THANKS Stephen, you could never had idea why I am even more than grateful for your being a singer
Stephin Merritt - I Don't Want To Get Over You I don't want to get over you I guess I could take a sleeping pill And sleep at will And not have to go through What I go through I guess I should take Prozac, right? And just smile all night At somebody new Somebody not too bright But sweet and kind Who would try to get you off my mind I could leave this agony behind Which is just what I'd do If I wanted to But I don't want to get over you 'Cause I don't want to get over love I could listen to my therapist Pretend you don't exist And not have to dream of What I dream of I could listen to all my friends And go out again And pretend it's enough Or I could make a career of being blue I could dress in black and read Camus Smoke clove cigarettes and drink vermouth Like I was seventeen That would be a scream But I don't want to get over you
Interesting, who is this handsome man in black, who's sitting right behind Merritt? With this song, black and white, he looks so mysterious and, in some way, shy.
There's a broad variety of stylistic variations between the Magnetic Fields albums; that's why for newbies, I always suggest they try to find an as recent as possible live performance to listen to. He is an amazing songwriter.
Excellent performance! I would love to see an album of his best in this format. One observation and one annoyance... Stephin kind of looks like Kevin Spacey in this clip. Why didn't the producers remove that big-faced Clay Aiken look-alike who is annoyingly present over Stephin's right shoulder for most of the performance? Nonetheless, I love this... 1:54!
BTW, His name is pronounced "STEEV-en" like Mine! Due to the Male Orientation of the name the First E is Long and the PH yields F's second pronunciation as carried by the word OF said "uV" Our namess counter-match the Girls name Stephanie said "STeF-uhNee"
Autocorrect always switches to StephEn But in Reality the name is from Greek Steffanos isn't it? everything else is bastardized attempts to pronounce it by foreign ('barbaros') languages like all the misspellings of Alexander's By the way, my brother's name is Kevin, but I'd never heard it pronounced *Queffen* until the Danish girlfriend of another brother saw it written and pronounced it so!!! I bet there is alwas a first time for anyone to hear Covfeffe or Covffid
@@pendragonU Well that was when I was on a soap box on the pronunciation of My first name. I have been in fact reared and ambiguously addressed with both proper and correct pronunciations. I have also discovered a demographic that go by the correct pronunciation, that is why Curry came to the scene however it seems that the proper anachronistic canon seems to be winning.

I'm right there now. The agony I feel when I hear this song is unbearable. Nothing has described the hurt more perfectly
Is about missing teeth also
And you want to hate them for it, but still love them and forgive
And you can't stop loving even if you wished to or could have a chance at it, ever since the first moment you fell in love with them
I didn't fully realize how I felt until you explained it so clearly in this comment. Thanks for that.

He is the anti-Elton John. Should they ever meet, they'll both disappear into nothingness.
Luke Malik :'O
not just them...i'm pretty sure the universe would collapse in upon itself.
It will create a discharge of energy that will endow everyone in a 315 meter radius with prodigious musical ability that will nonetheless prove transitory.
I dont understand this comment, but then I know very little about Elton John
I listen to this to know there are people out there who feel like me
Прекрасная песня
Right there with you. I've listened to this probably a hundred times
Favourite performance of my favourite artist playing my favourite song!
I hope this video will be always on youtube.
My favorite artist of all time. Stephin I've been with you for 13 years or more. Stay sad.
Man this lyrical piece is so rich and heavy yet so soothing. He was one of the greatest of all time but sadly he couldn't gather a wide spread audience
He is still alive
我是中国人,我很爱他,他的声音,他的歌词

Planning ahead, & this is on my funeral playlist. I'm serious & I mean this positively.
breaks my heart into pieces everytime i listen this masterpiece. This is the type of song that you can cry yourself to sleep💔
Ouch, I felt that ;; what a beautiful performance. The tender playing on the piano. 💕
This performance is truly special
Just hilariously heartbreaking. The handsome guy in the background gets it!
I love his lyrics. Such a terrific, under rated song writer
Stephin Merritt - I Don't Want To Get Over You
I don't want to get over you
I guess I could take a sleeping pill
And sleep at will
And not have to go through
What I go through
I guess I should take Prozac, right?
And just smile all night
At somebody new
Somebody not too bright
But sweet and kind
Who would try to get you off my mind
I could leave this agony behind
Which is just what I'd do
If I wanted to
But I don't want to get over you
'Cause I don't want to get over love
I could listen to my therapist
Pretend you don't exist
And not have to dream of
What I dream of
I could listen to all my friends
And go out again
And pretend it's enough
Or I could make a career of being blue
I could dress in black and read Camus
Smoke clove cigarettes and drink vermouth
Like I was seventeen
That would be a scream
But I don't want to get over you
Glad you finally found it Mark. It's not often you see such a wonderful performance avec cigarette, I hope you enjoyed.
i love this song so much
Doesn't get much better than this!
This is such a pearl. Thanks
that kid in the background watching him gets it.
I've been looking for this performance for years
I have a love I cannot get over. After hearing this song 'I Don't Want To Get Over You' and I think I must read Camus. He's not wearing his usual hat.
Pretty remarkable. A true original.
Perfect performance!
One of my favorite writers performing one of my favorite songs.
Nearly in tears.
The 16 up 16 doon is oddly satisfying
Don't let us keep you up, Stephin. ;)
His deep voice singing is similar in a way to Leonard Cohen’s was in the way it somehow soothes me so much
Wow!!!
Interesting, who is this handsome man in black, who's sitting right behind Merritt? With this song, black and white, he looks so mysterious and, in some way, shy.
Is that the real Reno Dakota just over Stephin's shoulder on the audience's right?
i thought i was the only one who noticed that
Yes.
It is indeed. What an audience - Neil Gaiman and Reno Dakota!

Does anyone have sheets for this?
wow
he can't get over the cigarette !
brilliant!
It fits the song. He is an artist.
beautiful version. did they ever release a piano version?
is the guy behind him a celeb? he looks familiar
looking for full the episode
great
❤

it's European television; no manicure necessary
weird, i love the presence of that guy in this video.. you can see him feeling it
More like Patton Oswalt
A giant. L-rd, J-sus. 💝💝💝
Where was this performance, and are there more clips from it?
This was from a BBC Later with Joolz Holland epiosde. He just recorded one song or at least they only broadcast one.
Correct.
Neil Gaman in the audience.

Here's one he did last year for a children's environmental documentary that many people have not heard yet: ua-cam.com/video/Y4wRMJTv6QE/v-deo.html
thanx
The lad in the back looks like Geoff from A Taste Of Honey
he's like the cool version of a nerd
Great tune, but the cigarette a wee bit pretentious/contrived...
sometimes a cigar is just a cigar
