  • Welcome to Adam’s Garden Guides, and I'd be delighted if you could subscribe to my channel if you enjoy this video and would like more.
Hardy succulents are some of my favourite plants for patio pots, looking good month after month, and many flowering too. And most are drought-lovers too and will flourish in hot summer conditions with the minimum of watering.
This project takes a simple terracotta container with planting pockets round its edges and takes you step-by-step through plant selection and planting to ensure you can create the same style of sempervivum, sedum and hardy succulent pot for your own patio.
I’d love to hear your feedback or questions so do post them in the comments below.

No problem. I do try and name and caption plants accurately whenever I can, otherwise how can viewers find these plants for their own projects. So pleased you enjoyed the video. Do check out some of my others too.

Gorgeous. I've had a pot like that in the past but it died . Will try again and add gravel into the mix. My last pot may have rotted.

Yes very good drainage is essential. There are some lovely varieties to choose from so I hope you can find some nice ones for your pot. Good luck.

I love these plants, and so do my squirrels!! Any thoughts?

Oh how annoying. I do get squirrels around my garden but the only time they really start digging into pots is when they're burying acorns and nuts in the autumn. I wonder if they are burying them in your pots?
I do sometimes attach pieces of galvanised chicken wire over pots of planted bulbs to protect them, or if it is a low pot/bowl you could rest an upturned wire hanging basket over them temprarily as a barrier.
Or perhaps try a squirrel deterrent spray, although I have never tried these.

Hi Adam, your pot looks lovely.
I tried to grow these ones but was not successful. I think I overwatered and they rotted. Is terracotta the best type of pot for them?

Personally I think terracotta pots are the best choice for sempervivums and succulents. My reasons include: it’s a porous material, unlike plastic, so loses some moisture through the sides to help ensure compost dries out after heavy rain. It is also heavier than plastic, so more stable. I also think it looks nicer too, and fits in well with other terracotta pots on my patio. A gritty, very free-draining compost is also essential.

I've had one for a few months. Was doing great until recently. It's leaves have turned brown and mushy. I want to replant it with the babies but not sure how 😐

Oh dear! I wonder if the compost got too wet. Had it been raining a lot, or perhaps overwatered? Houseleeks can tolerate dry periods quite well, and don’t require as much water as many garden plants. Good luck.

Those squirrels are aggressive. They eat the entire plant. I'll try your suggestions. Thanks
