If Ryu is a wizard, then nearly every anime character is a wizard; that depresses me to a certain extent. Then I think of Chie also being a wizard who can kick people into space, and that eases the pain a bit.
From a lore perspective, hadouken translates roughly to "wave motion fist" which points at it being more of a technique developed to make use of the users fists to focus a shockwave at enemies. Definitely not a spell. The flaming and electrical based ones are anyone's guess lol.
Chi Casting is willpower based. Wizards are INT based, Sorcerers are CHA based. so he's some magic-ish monk class. with willpower based spellcasting. I guess he's a druid.
+bloodred255 Druid and Clerics both use Wisdom for spellcasting. So do many other caster classes, but those are the 2 "core" ones that use Wisdom. So maybe Ryu is just a Monk that multi-classed into Cleric. Although there are monks and archetypes / prestige classes of them that can cast spells and magical powers from their hands (like Ryu's channeling of his powers). Monks also use Ki to channel energy through their fists which is a similar idea to what Ryu does. In D&D logic, it's pretty evident that pretty much every generic anime / fighter character ever has Monk levels. How do cartoon characters keep surviving all those explosions, spells, and shit? It's easy. They have 2 levels in Monk for Evasion and rolled the reflex save. :)
bloodred255 I always thought that physics just worked differently in Street Fighter, and Chi, telekinesis, and psycho energy are just known quantities. that's why background characters aren't flipping out when they see fireballs and a zappy green man.
DnD rules indicate that Ryu is not a wizard. He is a monk “Monks make careful study of a magical energy that most monastic traditions call ki. This energy is an element of the magic that suffuses the multiverse-specifically, the element that flows through living bodies. Monks harness this power within themselves to create magical effects” Mystery solved
going by Pathfinder rules, Ryu would be a Kineticist; a person able to project their inner strength as a blast of energy, but not necessarily a wizard of any sort
If we're going by DnD rules, Ryu is a monk. Which isn't necessarily a spellcasting class, depending on specialization, but derives its energy from a similar source as a wizard. If we're not going by DnD rules (because why the fuck would we use that clusterfuck of stolen ideas in the first place) he's drawing on his own inner energy that every living being has, not using magical foci, arcane incantations, ritual circles, pacts with supernatural beings or other wizardly sources of power. Ultimately, it's all science, we just can't explain it with our current understanding of the world. So Ryu is a scientist. Also, white bandanna is Alpha Ryu, later on he wears the red one Ken gives him.
I never once thought about it before, but I think I'm with Jeff, Ryu has magic powers. And for the record, Poison is still officially a cross-dressing male, despite the obvious questions the design raises. :B
"Ken's American."
"But he learned at the feet of..."
"Sheng Long."
That synchronization is fucking choice.
yeah that was surreal

Ryu points at Shadoloo and says "Well I'm a karate master and that's fucked up."
Vinny throwing out the D&D definitions of a wizard compared to a sorcerer, I am impressed.
Ryu's beard is named Sakura.
+2

Clerics draw their powers from planar entities (gods) I was not under the impression he did.
thought Druids pulled it from nature.

So are their abilities affected by anti-magic fields?
I'm with Jeff, we should judge magic based on DnD rulesets. Sorcerers channel magical energy from within, therefore Ryu is using magic.
AverageO what about LotR? Does that make Gandalf NOT a wizard? since his magic draws off physical stamina?
He's not a vancian wizard but he's still using magic which is what wizards do.
People have argued this; generally speaking, in terms of D+D, he's seen as a Celestial. He is a Maiar, like Saruman and Sauron and Balrogs are.

Oh snap , never thought 💭 it like that
My wife brought this up
And now it makes sense

tamriilin
This is so, which is why it's important not to mistake Poison for being transgendered. :P
@@tamriilin Literally depends on your region.
I think Poison is beyond cross dressing. "She" is taking hormones, and like every transexual criminal, she is definitely guilty of murder.
