Great video but! You're about to start a hot lap in a car with one of the best sounding engines on the planet.... And you drown out the engine sound with music from button moon???
Joe Achilles
Spot on! 😂 5 mins of talking and then a complete cop out when the fun happens who doesn't want to listen to the engine being worked?!
Joe Achilles Acieed!!!
That's hilarious, what is that all about?!! Poncy music over a wonderful TTrs sound track, come on Autocar sort it out!
Well they most likely did that because they didn't want people complaining about his breathing into the mic lol. Next time they should have an engine bay or exhaust mic I think.
That was gay with the music the only time he shuts up and it’s wired elevator music? TT RS represents. Good clip.
Umm they make the RS3 which directly compares with the 2 hatches lol wtf
Imad S for that, this comparison is bogus. Yeah, it might have very similar characteristics as the TTRS, but let's compare apples to apples!
i might sound out of place but could u please tell us the name of the music track played in the video, thax 👍🏻
Mr Fishcake What does a turnip under steer like? I'm having a tough time imagining it.
Mr Fishcake While that was incredibly descriptive and put images into my mind I won't soon forget, I'm still having a tough time translating it to understeer and vehicles in any way whatsoever.
Would be nice to know which tires these cars have on? Makes the most difference on a track surface like that.
I can't believe that at no stage you mentioned whether the cars were using the same brand of tyre at the same wear level. Without taking that out of the equation, I just don't see what there is to learn here.
I suspect the RS3 would have been slower on this track and in these conditions than the Ford. Shocked the TTRS was slower than the A45 as it is lighter and has more power. Good win for the Merc.
First time I've seen a track test on a golf course cart path. Creative!
In this type of condition tyres are everything.
What I would be interested in is how these cars compare as a daily driver.
Handling wise, this video is at odds with every other review ive seen
were they on tyres suitable for the weather/ the same tyres?? would be interesting to know
what tires were the three cars on? if the audi was on summer tires and the a45 all season or snow tires... no wonder one had more grip... not a fair comparison if all cars weren't on tires suitable for the conditions
Jason Jones maybe ttrs was on all seasons and amg on summer ones. You never know😉
Croatian Thinker Unlikely, as these rims are the 20 inch of the TTRS which have to be 255/30 R20 Summer... there is a 19 inch option, and yes... without knowing the tires being used, this test is as useless as a F1 vs Snowmobil on snow test xD
And tbh, my friend has an a45 and me the new TTRS, there is no way that with similiar tires used the a45 has anywhere near the grip nor traction... so really bad test again by autocar, in fact ever since sutcliffe left it has become a joke -.-
Dont get it why they cant just tell some important facts like tyres used et certera, I mean I would wish alignments and cambrr setting on some tracktests but what people are asking for is not really a big deal xD
Professor_BTG couldn't agree more. He was biased against the TT from the very start, banging on about perceptions that are not relevant since the mark 3 came on the scene 3 years ago. In fact, it was a completely predictable review ending in this weird British car reviewer obsession with promoting the Ford as the one to have. He just did not seem to be credible as a reviewer (and boring, too).
Guys, why would anyone assume we'd go out of our way to put one car on performance tyres & another on winters & then pretend we were making a fair test? You think we've got time for that nonsense? All cars were on OE fit performance rubber (ie not winters) as supplied by their manufacturers.
@autocar what app are you using for your laptimes?
Y the fuck is he wearing a helmet 😂
It's most probably a requirement on the track, or the insurance companies and whatnot.
Oliver I'm guessing you've never driven on track before? It's their property, you follow their rules or you get the boot.
Junglist wait they shove you in the trunk if you don't wear a helmet??
Good job Matt - enjoyed that
Tyres made all the difference here.
There is a "golf" between prices of rs and ttrs though...
What tires were on all cars? If the FoRS had Cup 2s it would make sense why it lost (aside from the obvious slowest/cheapest car there). The audi sounds the best of the three. All seem like great cars tho.
This is contrarian backlash to the overwhelming number of plaudits that the Focus RS so richly deserves.
Thank you for the nice test. Love the a45...
Seems a bit weird to compare 2 medium sized hatchbacks to a roadster (is the tt classed as a roadster?) which is 20k more than one of the cars you're comparing it to.
What a strange comparison! Ignoring the fact that the other two are hot versions of mundane small hatchbacks, while the TT is (or wants to be) a sports car, its also £20,000 more than the RS! Silly. Compare the RS3, but not the TT.
...less grip on front tires on the ford because of the semi-slick tires!
so this dude felt .2 second difference on the track? I am surprised at how much he was down playing the ttrs, just to have it come within .2 seconds of the amg. And he said he felt that difference. ok
What tyres?
I don't think I would but the TT. For that kind of money, I would rather get an M2 or a 718 Cayman. Between the hot hatches, its difficult to choose but I guess its the Focus RS for me.
your timed lap was so relaxed. It looked like you were street driving with a high margin for error
One of the best sounding production engines on sale and they have shitty music on the hot lap. Great editing guys.
so you guys compare a 3 door hatchback vs 5 door hatchbacks. Makes sense?
Great Video Matt
Good video. Couldn't agree more. Don't think I'd have the ttrs unless I found myself at a traffic light Grand Prix. A45 for me.
Perfect review :)
That RS is on its summer tires in February in the wet - you basically tied its shoelaces together on the starting block.
Well, as long as the cars use different tires in such conditions its not fair to make any conclusion ... Especially when one has far wider tires (ttrs) than the other two... EVO already showed that the ttrs got a driftmode wonder whether the tester even knew about it ;)
What great review my drive to work is just like that, if I was going to do that type of driving I would buy a track car
Wouldn't the RS3 be a more direct competetor to the RS and the AMG?
Replace the TT with the RS3 Hatch and you got yourself a good comparison
video looks like you didn't push the TT to its limit....
I mean they should have included the god r and the s3
What's the name of the Song at 4:55?
who in their right mind would take cars this expensive in a gravel rally track like this!? Does this test really quantify the performance of the cars or show real world performance that consumers can expect? pointless test IMO.. I bet the Audi would murder both in a normal track test.
what RS stands for in AUDI ?
Everyone knows: Mercedes-Benz - The Best or Nothing!
mrlilmatt123 it would do well to do a sub 50 second lap in a twisty track in these conditions
A dry track comparison would be interesting.
that TT RS engine... I would like to see it in Lotus Evora :D
Feels like i'm drowning when i listen to you
Probably they were like, okay it's raining now what do we have to do? AHA, let's make it an all weather video! I like the skids, but I now wonder how good that Merc is ^^!
but the AMG has an optional front LSD! Who would expect it to be better on low traction conditions?? Stupid
But still over £10k cheaper than the TTRS even with the LSD, so why is it stupid?
Question? do you think this RS will last just like any other car like a Corolla that surely can last for 500k miles? just curious. Nothing against RS. I am asking because i would like to buy one.
Tough choice for me between the focus rs and a45 amg. But I'd have a m2 over both (and I'm quite an amg and ford fan)
Also regarding the end part, the fords value will probably sky rocket as most fast fords usually do
I'm sure he said right over the line we go and the clocked had allready stopped?? 🤔🤔🤔🤔
The way the Autocar tests the cars 🚗 are very different compare to other testers. I don't know if that is a compliment or not🤔
A £20,000 gap between an Audi TT RS & a Ford Focus RS, Are we not missing out on something here?!?
Have been been in both or driven them? The Audi is worth 20k more just for the engine and interior build quality, not to mention the better looks.
Why no drag race?
I just love the A45 amg
Think that was the worst possible test they could have produced
U need to test the BMW M2
To be fair... you drove the TT like an old lady. It is capable of so much more. Go watch Tiff tame the beast. The Merc does look impressive though.. il be checking one out soon maybe 👍
all three cars are freakin sweet!
So what does he take to drive to the next Fastfood Chain ?
sti?
audi tt rs weight is not the body but drive train and taking a close look you find that audi use high drive ratios and benz and ford use same ratios through
Why don`t you try a dry track?
I think the Fords problem steems mostly from tires that are more summer oriented than for wet weather.
Considering the Audi is 20k more than the Ford you really cannot compare the two.
With that crappy weather, the tires made more of a difference than anything else. Also is it me or does the Audi look like it was designed by two people. The aggressive front doesn't match the rear at all. I also don't like the way it looks. The first generation was different and unique, this new one might be faster but I honestly don't see the appeal of it.
mhh.. Normally you have to compare with the RS3
Nice Monaco👍🏻
I like the video but why you out of breath? 😂
I think the test going bad for focus rs because the pilot is a very normal driver and not a rally driver
Nice comparison but I had to mute the video on the TTRS lap. That was just an awful music/noise.
You need to do this on a dry day so the cars can grip.
His preamble would have been more authentic if he'd acknowledged the step-change in performance the mark3 has brought, compared to the previous 2. Usually the TT is marked down for having too much predictability and grip. When the 400hp TTRS thunders round the track and slides, it's marked down for being too unpredictable. This reviewer is not credible.
Audi, please make a TT RS Plus. Remove the backseats and make the fronts carbon buckets with racing harness option, change suspension and breaks, 10-20 bhp more, more aggressive aero, a rear biased dif (more than now) and a manual gearbox option, and just watch them sell like hot cakes.
I watched this and have 1 thing to say. Nice helmet.
Doesn't matter who wins on track, the manual is always a winner.
Umm price difference? Of course the TT is the best. Nearly cost double of the RS
This has got to be the lamest test I've seen on these cars. It seems as though the track and conditions were specifically chosen to hamper the more powerful TT-RS. Not only that, but the tires could very easily be the difference between the three. Poor test.
A45 AMG can be compared to RS3 but not TTRS, the right competitor would have been CLA AMG..
I'd (still) take a 981 Cayman over all of these!
boy638 what??? Please tell me someone who would consider these 2 cars ik the same category when buying. The ttrs is a 2+2. It is much more practical. You can basically drive the ttrs all year. Go shopping even drive the kids to school. The Cayman is a car you have as a fun car besides your cayenne or panamera.
sure is a 2+2 but the rear seats can barely fit children so people would just use it as luggage space, speaking of which the 718 has arguably more luggage space due to the fact it is mid engine and therefore has a front and rear luggage space :)
no 4 wheel drive system compares to the legendary quattro
AMG was the only one with a LSD in the front. how can that be a comparison . 🤷♂️🤷♂️🙄
Speed is about power to weight ratio, imagine how much faster this chap would be if he had a salad for lunch
King Joe strikes 😂
I really don't get the point in this group. The rivals don't have 4 wheels drive, so we'll just get other stuff that does (negating the inherent advantage over rivals)? The Merc and Ford should be against an RS3, not a TT. THe TT should be against the Cayman, or maybe Z4, where the 'numbness' of the RS platform but 4wd bonus battles against lighter, more playful rwd cars. If you think the TT-RS doesn't really have a direct rival, then don't do a comparison video.
How did you manage to make boring video with nice cars like these?
Probably It's all about the tyres
he's getting winded haha
A45 of course.
I think sombody left the phone unhooked in the audi....
Cant believe they comparing a Ford (aka dagenham dustbins) with Audi and Merc, at least chuck in a BM or VW or summat like that
come on that tt rs should be at least a second ahead of the merc
why compare it with some crummy hatchbacks
Why no RS3? 😌
Because I don't think there currently is an RS3 you can buy from Audi, they stopped making it. (I assume a new one is on it's way).
First you compare the s class with the panamera and the M6, and now the ttrs against the A45 and the Focus RS. What in the world is Autocar thinking.......just cause u have 3 cars for a week doesnt mean you can compare all of them lol
