On Tuesday, the Russian Defence Ministry announced the commencement of the first stage of exercises focusing on the practical training for the preparation and use of non-strategic nuclear weapons. These drills, ordered by President Vladimir Putin earlier in May, are a response to perceived security threats stemming from "militant statements" by Western officials. The Kremlin has specifically cited remarks by French President Emmanuel Macron about deploying European troops to Ukraine and British Foreign Secretary David Cameron's support for Ukraine using UK-supplied weapons against Russia.
