I was wondering who Todd was looking at when he turned his head back and forth but than I realized Todd didn't want to exclude the camera man from the conversation so he was looking at him too.....what a down to earth dude.
I think that’s accurate on some level. You’ve gotta have a little nerd in you to get through The Ikon or appreciate the concept of Singring and the Glass Guitar, although musically, there are some of Todd’s most melodic riffs and blistering leads in there. I saw that gig live in real time, btw, pyramid and all.
Todd was on the money, this interview was from 1978, he predicted mass media storage smaller than a sink in everyone's home, look what we've got now and it produces HD quality, staggering!
I love Todd Rundgren. Some people have said that because they really dig "I Saw The Light" or something. I Love Todd Rundgren because I relate to him and his art in a way that I can't explain. I've never quite felt a kinship with another creative individual like I do with him. I don't even know how to really describe it.
Same here.... his music moves me in a way I can't quite describe... it reaches corners and hallways and rooms of my soul like none other.. the sense of kinship is uncanny
Just Jeanne I couldn't have said it better! Every part of me as an artist seems like it is built, unbeknownst to me, upon Todd's spirit and artistry. Really hard to put into concrete terms!
If he'd said these things ten years later- 1988 - it would still be way ahead of its time. In 1978 the vinyl LP still ruled and, in the UK at least, the VCR was still a novelty - and the size of a sink!! I love Todd more each day!
I think it is funny that his two sons both were drafted by major league baseball teams (one nearly made it...got to AAA) and he never played sports. He probably would have been good at that too. He is exceptionally bright and apparently a diligent worker which accounts for his skill in musicianship and technology.....and he never sold out! Awesome.
I love how refreshingly PRACTICAL he is when it comes to technology. Look, no one beats Todd when it comes to the cutting edge--the difference is he knows how to USE it!
I've often wondered (sice I've been a fan since 1974) what is his IQ? That's why I've often thought, even if I could sit down and have a conversation with him, I'd almost be embarassed, because I'm SO not near his league. I know it's been said many times, by many people, but his talents are so underrated. But when you think of the concepts he's embraced, and the music that he's done not only for himself, but engineered & produced for others...it really does make you stand back & say ...
At 4:05 in this in 1978 he's talking about computer interactive/ television which we now know as UA-cam. He talked about how lame video disc would become. His insight was spot on. What a genius Todd was! Way ahead of his time musically, conceptually, artistically, intellectually. Fantastic interview. Kind of makes me feel like Forrest Gump when he talked about investing in some fruit company back when the movie came out in 1993. If only I hadda shoulda woulda coulda. Great interview!
So forward thinking. This was 1978 and Todd’s talking about home computers and music videos, years before mtv even first aired. I could listen to Todd for hours.
I remember story that my dad told me that you created you this work of heart and you picked him out of the crowd and recognized his art and signed it. Then my mother now divorced from him many years ago destroyed it
Todd Rundgren has such a great voice I was instantly attracted to him when I first heard him sing back in the early ‘70s, then later discovering how intelligent he is made me love him more, and finally, finding out he was a dad to Liv Tyler when she was little and needed a real father in her life, sent me over the moon. Mad props to him for that alone because it shows the kind of person he is, on the inside, where it really counts. He’s got it, baby, he’s got it. A wizard, a true star (a great guy who’s down to earth & a brainiac too!)
What's interesting is he nails all this stuff, predicts streaming, the blowup of cable, the folly of media like discs, tapes, etc. He accurately pictures TB disk storage in each home..and so much more. But he blows it on SNL, lol...implies they might not be around for long. Here we are in July 2013, SNL going strong. Kinda funny. Otherwise tho, always a prescient dude.
The McLuhan of rock. Interesting to see how this made it to interactive streaming video. And also interesting and ironic that he doesn't use a smartphone.
If you watch live interviews with Todd, you'll notice he is always rubbing and scratching his nose. I would bet it's more of a nervous habit than an actual itch.
this is what a GENIUS sounds like he can project into the future using the information he has at the time an mazing human being and so important to American music AN NO ONE LISTENS TO HIM ANY MORE kids don't even know who he IS all the music that was so important to "us" really falls flat on the kids
Liv is actually Steve Tylers daughter. Bebe Buell was dating Todd on and off for like 8 years but during their split in 77 she became pregnant with Tyler's child, Liv. To protect her baby from Tyler's out of controll heroin and cocaine addictions she asked Todd to pretend to be her father untill he cleaned up. When Liv turned 8 years old she found out the truth becuase both Todd and Bebe felt it was time to tell her. She has said she always has and still does concider Todd a father to her! Very interesting stuff if you ask me :)
Those big old video discs , NEVER caught on. DVDs of today are 1/5th the size, Here it is 40 years later, Todd was, and still is, RIGHT ON ! except his face got fatter .
Really ahead of his time saying all this because i don't even think the personal computer was invented yet. Or ar least not out to the public yet or at least not any on mass scale yet and he is predicting the internet and the way we consume movies, tv and music today.
Todd wasn't wrong - "billion byte" storage computers were available before the 25 years after 1978 he predicted. Gigabyte hard drives were becoming common in the late 90s, when we also had Winamp and Napster.
I never knew laserdiscs existed until I saw them mentioned on the toy story wikipedia page, of all places. They were available as far back as 1976 weren't they? Did they ever catch on much or was it something people generally didn't own, like the kind of thing a gadget fan might have?
Todd was always just a bit too far ahead of his time. One thing he didn't see coming was that shortly after this interview was recorded music video production would rapidly change over to film. It started in Europe, where film allowed them to get out of the studio as well as ditch the inferior look of video. Todd's multimillion dollar video studio was obsolete nearly overnight.
Predicts the future of media with 100% accuracy
Daniel Eyre Yeah me too haha
One of the most insightful and intelligent views from an incredible musician. He was so ahead of his time this was 1978!
Absolutely, he is a genius, gifted Artist/Musician.
I was wondering who Todd was looking at when he turned his head back and forth but than I realized Todd didn't want to exclude the camera man from the conversation so he was looking at him too.....what a down to earth dude.
The Cameraman represents us, the audience.
Wow, the Philly accent is amazing. I am so fascinated by this guy.
he's like a rock God for nerds ( I mean the in an amazingly awesome way).
Hey! I'm amazingly awesome too! & a rock nerd.
@@imautopian you GO rock NERD!
I think that’s accurate on some level. I had to recheck the date of the interview since he looks 1970s young but this seemed like a conversation that would take place in the late 1990s
I love Todd Rundgren. Some people have said that because they really dig "I Saw The Light" or something. I Love Todd Rundgren because I relate to him and his art in a way that I can't explain. I like how he’s lucid; down to earth and a real artist.
You're not alone.
i relate 100%, the music he makes sounds exactly like the music i have in my head (AWATS especially)
Todd has always been so far ahead of the curve! This is 1978 and he nails it some ten yrs. before it happened! What a visionary!
Genius.
If he'd said these things ten years later- 1988 - it would still be way ahead of its time. In 1978 the vinyl LP still ruled and, in the UK at least, the VCR was still a novelty - and the size of a sink!! I love Todd more each day!
40 years later proves he knew what he was talking about.
I think it is funny that his two sons both were drafted by major league baseball teams (one nearly made it...got to AAA) and he never played sports. He probably would have been good at that too. Dude was a visionary
Todd is not only a musical genius. Way ahead of his time. He could have been a titan in the tech industry.
I LOVE TODD RUNDGREN MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF!! I admire him in a number of ways.
Yes, you were absolutely right Todd, 2022, you called it ….. AND thanks for the music
I've said it before; Todd, a prolific musical genius......relative always.
Genius
Todd=visionary......& still rockin' on Maui. See/hear him on "LIVE @ Daryls House."
His songs are timeless.
Todd predicted exactly what has happened 40 years ago.
At 4:05 in this in 1978 he's talking about computer interactive/ television which we now know as UA-cam. He talked about how lame video disc would become. His insight was spot on. I agree ! He was way ahead of everyone... Great interview...!
He is a genius, a gifted Artist/musician. ❤❤
a prophet a true star
....I knew I was right to follow this guy. To keep an eye on what he's up to.
Extremely talented, loves music...and totally loves his fans.
brainstorming with todd.
So forward thinking. This was 1978 and Todd’s talking about home computers and music videos, years before mtv even first aired.
I could listen to Todd for hours.
I remember story that my dad told me that you created you this work of heart and you picked him out of the crowd and recognized his art and signed it. Then my mother now divorced from him many years ago destroyed it
This man predicted streaming in 78
Todd built a time machine in his studio and traveled from 2024 to 1978 to record this interview.
Brilliant Mind' Way ahead of Everyone,,Todd Rules,,, Lesson 423 Retrospect !!! :)
I had such a crush on him.
I have & always will have a crush on him. ;)
He is so beautiful but it's like you can't quite grasp it
Fucken hell. He seriously just called the downfall of CD and DVD's from 40 years away. How did he do that?
JugaJuga14 A wizard / A true star
What's interesting is he nails all this stuff, predicts streaming, the blowup of cable, the folly of media like discs, tapes, etc. He accurately pictures TB disk storage in each home..and so much more. Too bad the interviewer keeps cutting Todd off, we want to hear Todd's intelligence not the voice or opinions of the interviewer
he's correct about everything in this interview until the very end when he shares his thoughts on the longevity of SNL
The McLuhan of rock. Interesting to see how this made it to interactive streaming video. And also interesting and ironic that he doesn't use a smartphone.
Thumbs up for mention of the McLuhan theory (the medium IS the message)
For prog lovers, check out the band McLuhan!
Incredible insight for the time. How cool 😎
Prophetic
If you watch live interviews with Todd, you'll notice he is always rubbing and scratching his nose. I would bet it's more of a nervous habit than an actual itch.
I thought it was due to painkillers
He still does it today!
Coke - The Real Thing
Amazing prediction!!!
Seems preoccupied with his nose did he just do a line or something?
Dude killed it....!
this is what a GENIUS sounds like
he can project into the future using the information he has at the time
an mazing human being and so important to American music
AN NO ONE LISTENS TO HIM ANY MORE
kids don't even know who he IS
all the music that was so important to "us" really falls flat on the kids
James woods had long hair?
I Love him!!!! His daughter Liv looks just like him 👍🏻😉😉😉
Liv is actually Steve Tylers daughter. Bebe Buell was dating Todd on and off for like 8 years but during their split in 77 she became pregnant with Tyler's child, Liv. Very interesting stuff if you ask me :)
Liv is Steve Tyler's , biological daughter ! She , however , calls Todd , her father. I have friends who have spent time with her in Hawaii.
You want to say that Liv inherits a spirit of Todd. I understood the meaning that you said well.
I did not know that...interesting. G you need to do some research and get your facts straight lol.
I wonder if a paternity test was ever done because Liv reminds me so much more of Todd.
"Computers will have a billion bytes of memory." Yes, we only have 1GB haha
Those big old video discs , NEVER caught on. DVDs of today are 1/5th the size, Here it is 40 years later, Todd was, and still is, RIGHT ON ! except his face got fatter .
BOBBY D who's visage DOESN'T plump up as they age?
I actually think he looks better with a little more flesh. Back then, he looked like a vegan Henry Winkler
Fuck me Rundgren was on the money. Not just a damn good musician but clearly had a good brain on his head.
Curve, meet Todd.
Really ahead of his time saying all this because i don't even think the personal computer was invented yet. Or ar least not out to the public yet or at least not any on mass scale yet and he is predicting the internet and the way we consume movies, tv and music today.
i think if he ever got a biopic Macaulay Culkin's a dead ringer. all he has to do is channel a HINT of Goldblum.
Wizard a true prophet
I wonder who Steve Jobs listened to whilst working to late hour's for our future
Todd wasn't wrong - "billion byte" storage computers were available before the 25 years after 1978 he predicted. Gigabyte hard drives were becoming common in the late 90s, when we also had Winamp and Napster.
@sircorey...you could not have said it any better, this man was way ahead of his time!!
7:29 yup.........so freaking smart, it's painful
wanna talk about a visionary?
How did he know this?
Impressive. He laid out 20 years of tech in 1978 like he’s a time traveler. He called software being key, he should have bought stock in Microsoft.
Does he look like robin gibb?
Steve Jobs stole the idea of iTunes from Todd Rundgren.
very accurate prediction shows Todd is an alien i mean he made the album Disco Jets come on!!
I never knew laserdiscs existed until I saw them mentioned on the toy story wikipedia page, of all places. They were available as far back as 1976 weren't they? Did they ever catch on much or was it something people generally didn't own, like the kind of thing a gadget fan might have?
Wow! Dude was a bit of an oracle, it would seem.
Prescient, to say the least.
I've never seen him with short hair except when he was younger. Just like Schwarzeneger never had a beard until of late.
Todd was always just a bit too far ahead of his time. One thing he didn't see coming was that shortly after this interview was recorded music video production would rapidly change over to film. It started in Europe, where film allowed them to get out of the studio as well as ditch the inferior look of video. Todd's multimillion dollar video studio was obsolete nearly overnight.
i wonder what was causing TR's nose to be so itchy?
He always does that. Just a nervous tic.
coke
I think Todd's hopped up on the "white stuff" here.
Sugar?
Todd does Ritalin. He has said many times Coke was his least favorite substance. He likes Ritalin and Skyy Vodka.
He sure wiping his nose a lot lol.
Not 1978. And he’s coked outta his mind
He sure does have an itchy nose
This dude looks like Ringo Starr sometimes
An intelligent, talented tommy wiseau !
play with nose so much...why?
Ahead of his time...
Smart sob!
Liv looks just like him! He is her dad. No doubt.
