    To me, even if you have no connection with JDM history and that 90s culture, the Supra is still just a gorgeous, gorgeous car. I remember thinking that back when I was a kid and wasn't even interested in cars; when I saw it part of my unconscious mind noted down that it was a beautiful silhouette, which it is. It's just an almost perfect shape: smooth, sleek, elegant.
    That a 'car guy' like Hammond doesn't see that obvious aesthetic quality puzzles me, because it seems to be the most obvious feature of the mk4: it's not a showy car, it's not striking, it doesn't drop your jaw...it's just extremely pleasing to look at.

      It's the generational difference though really. As said in the video, all the 90s JDM cars are iconic primarily because of Gran Turismo, Initial D, and F&F, and consequently all the instagram/tiktok videos alluding the cars to those franchises. On a timeline where those franchises don't exist, the Supra really isn't anything special. Good? Absolutely no doubt, but it wouldn't otherwise be seen as anything different from say a Mercedes SL, Alfa Romeo Spyder, or Porsche 944 of the same vintage (inb4 weebs crying in 3, 2, 1).
      To address the now raging weebs, yes, I'm not disparaging against what 90s JDM cars achieved in motorsports in the 90s, but motorsports is far more niche than the games/movies mentioned. Really it was only the R32 GTR, Subaru Impreza, and Mitsubishi Evo that really had an impact in the west at the time through rallying, Group A touring cars, and Le Mans. Yeah the JGTC was a thing, but westerner's wouldn't have been aware of it in the 90s, this is pre-social media, hence why Hammond doesn't really connect with the Supra. Hammond isn't a gamer at all, and I doubt he ever really gave a shit about F&F.
      I should also mention that another reason 90s JDM cars are iconic is because in the mid 00s to early/mid 10s, they were dirt cheap performance cars that could perform far far beyond their price range; a working-man's sports car, but that era is long dead lol. I remember when you could get a mint R34 GTR for around £6k, and that was the most expensive of the JDMs in Banzai magazine classifieds lmao, EVERYTHING else would be £4.5k to as little as £1.5k.

    • @thesprawl2361
      @thesprawl2361 2 роки тому

      @@solitaryclusterofneurons598 No, I think the Supra is simply a lovely looking car. Its silhouette is just very pretty. I've personally always found Porsche 911s, especially the older ones, rather ugly to look at, with their duck bill front ends, although the 944 was nice-ish in some variants. Still looks strangely lop-ended when viewed from the side, with the bonnet much lower than it should be for the purposes of a kind of symmetry.
      I've never watched a single F&F movie, I dislike JDM 'culture' and I missed out completely on Gran Turismo since I only played arcade racers until fairly recently. So its 'iconicness' is neither here nor there for me. Like I said I remember liking the way it looked back when I was nine or ten and didn't know anything about cars.

    Great interview! Reaction to 26:10 :
    From my experience sim drivers that are able to adapt to a new car or track fast in the sim, have a lot of potential in real life. What they will struggle with is racecraft though. Real life drivers have much better racecraft when they go into the sim but they often struggle to get up to speed when just starting out. Most new and upcoming drivers have grown up with it which makes it much easier for them to adapt fast and beat sim drivers without a sweat

    • @ciaranmcguinness8900
      @ciaranmcguinness8900 2 роки тому

      While that may be true, in Sim racing real life drivers will tend to go for more dangerous and risky moves that they would almost never try in real life, you saw it during lockdown with Verstappen (he probably would try some of those moves in real life tbh) Norris, Albon, Russell and LeClerc. When there's no monetary or health risk to crashing they go for it far more aggressively than they would in real life.

    26:30 I think that question was answered nicely when the pandemic started, how younger F1 drivers started streaming (Lando, George, Charles, Albon...) more frequently and people which were already F1 sim racers beat them fairly easily. I remember that Ben Daly AKA Tiametmarduk raced Lando Norris on F1 game and he was actually faster than him. And as a guy who did both sort of real racing and sim racing, it was definitely harder to predict the car in sim racing than it was real racing therefore making the entire experience harder.

    I love Richard's calm, sympathetic, way of talking. His enthusiasm for talking any old shit about cars comes out. I bought his book, the first one after his first big accident, years ago and the only thing I remember from it was a time he was in Canada and made the mistake of flushing the chain on the lav after having a pee. His hosts glared at him and said: "If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down." Wonder why that's the only thing I remember?
