The reason why China does anything in Pakistan or Sri Lanka is because of India. They don't care about Pakistanis or Sri Lankans. The fear in India is that China always has the upper hand in negotiations. If China parks a spy ship at Hambantota and tell Sri Lanka to tell the world it is not a spy ship, then Sri Lanka will have to comply. Same with Pakistan. Some Pakistanis believe in some ridiculous iron-clad friendship with China. China is doing things in Pakistan because it wants to surround India. There is not a strong enough reason for China to be interested in Hambantota except for its intention to surround India. Pakistan and Sri Lanka are pawns in this game, and it is an unfortunate reality that Indians have to live with. Obviously, Indians have a lot more faith in Sri Lankans than in Pakistanis, but the fear is that Sri Lanka is not in a strong enough position to negotiate with an absolute beast of a country like China.
