Great interview! Would love a follow up interview where Thomas discusses his thoughts on the connections between music and art. That sounds really fascinating.
One myth he dispels so beautifully is that once an artist reaches "professional" status, especially if their work is selling, that they never produce "bad" paintings again, or paintings that "don't work." Nothing can be further from the truth. But even producing paintings that don't work always teach artists something. They 're always learning. Thank you, Matthew, and Tom, for this interview. You are both inspiring, especially to those of us who are committed to watercolor and doggedly trying to learn it, but refuse to give up!
Always a pleasure to listen to Mr. Schaller. Just a few moments in and I'm learning a lot. Here I thought, after seeing many, many of his paintings, that he'd hit this apparent stride long ago- to find just now that he feels that hes STILL developing and feels he's improving by leaps. Incredible. You just look at an artist like this and think, " this is a painter who is just at the pinnacle of skill in what he does. And he's been there so long he can do it in his sleep." It's so great to hear how I feel about my painting, expressed by someone like Mr. Schaller. He's so incredibly skillful, yet so humble. So amiable. Thank you for the upload. Great interviews. As a newer acrylic artist trying to learn more watercolor skills it nice to hear other artist discuss this journey of inspiration and painting. Thanks, Rich B in So California
Really great interview- thank you!!!
You're welcome! Glad you liked it.

Thank you Mathew. Inspiring interview.
I'd love to sit and listen to Tom's life stories over cosmos and California rolls. He's a wonderful painter and a hell of a human being.
I totally agree!
Great job, Matthew. Both yourself and Mr Schaller are so inspirational 👍
Love, LOVE, LOOOVE Thomas’ work
Thank you - you are both inspiring artists - 🙏
Very kind of you!
Nice interview. Enjoyed how you let him express who he is as a artist and a person

Very inspiring interview! Matthew, what kind of easel do you have? It looks like a great size.
Thanks Kalthleen! It's a wooden drafting table that allows you to change the angle. I've had it a few years and I can't remember the name of it...
good, but Master ???.... Sargent was a watercolour master..
