  • A first impressions review of the Diplomat Magnum, a German fountain pen from a reputable company that may not be as well known here in the U.S. They are currently on sale at various pen retailers, some as much as 50%. But is it a good value?

I met this kind of problem on nibs that do not stay still on the feeder. This is more common on the feeders that don't have a nib stopping point (you can find that edge on Waterman pens). You have to check how deep does the feed enter in the section without the nib on, and then put the nib on the feeder, hold them both with some rubber band and push them firmly in the section. Check visually that the feeder is inserted fully and that the nib is in the same position on the feeder as it was before the insertion. The nib should be held in place securely. If it still rocks, remove the nib and feed and check that the nib can follow the radius of the feed. Some nibs might get deformed and then they do not 'sit' correctly on the feeder, meaning less friction is available and you could have the nib moving laterally.

Same suggestion as Paul recommended on removing and cleaning the nib and feed. Very well organized and presented review.

Even that didn't solve it, but Diplomat had *excellent* customer service and shipped me a new section/feed/nib assembly, and it writes very well.

Great review. I have two Diplomat Magnums (EF) and love them. I have not had any start problems. I love how it writes. The nib is definitely more like a Japanese extra-fine nib, and is also a bit springier than most extra fine nibs. I have never had any skips or hard starts with it. After reading some of the other comments, it may just be a fluke of your pen. I hope Diplomat has great customer service and solves the problem for you.

They did, and the new feed and nib are excellent. I did a follow up here: ua-cam.com/video/QxGqDa_aXy4/v-deo.html

I bought mine about a year ago. It has always written smoothly and with out fault. It might just be the one you got and it would be a good idea to exchange it for another if under warranty still. I think I paid around $15 for mine from Pen Chalet.

Mine just came this week. It writes smoothly. I used the converter. I have the medium nib which writes smoothly. No hard starts yet.

Great! I will say that when I reached out to them after this they took care of it and sent me a new nib unit that has been terrific (I did a follow-up video on that, too…good support from Diplomat).

I bought one with hard starts. I got a replacement and it too had hard starts. I reached out to Diplomat Germany and they sent me a front section. That front section has been perfect with no hard starts.

Good to hear. They've gotten back in touch with me, and I should have a new front section on the way soon.

I just saw this. This happens to when I get oil from my hand on the lower part of the page. I write with a piece of paper under my hand to alleviate this problem. BTW in my opinion the Pilot Explorer is a better pen.

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  4 роки тому

I've had that happen, but this was definitely just out of kilter. They did have great customer service, and replaced the nib and section. I'll have to check out the Explorer sometime.

Also...I have paid $12.50 for these from Pen Chalet....for over a year... And are still currently available as of today at that price....And I highly recommend them. I think your pen might be an anomaly.

I have several Diplomat pens, including 3 Magnums, and have never experienced the problems you have. I keep a Magnum in my daily rotation, and find it to be a smooth writer, that never gives me a hard start. Send the pen in for servicing and that may resolve the issue. On the other hand, you didn’t like the pen from the outset, so that may be part of the problem

I contacted them just after this video and they replaced the nib unit quickly. Great customer service, so I posted a follow up video: ua-cam.com/video/QxGqDa_aXy4/v-deo.html

I can't agree with your comment on this pen anyway. Ok, it's a cheap pen, so don't expect the level of a Pelikan or a Caran d'Ache. I must say you write very badly. You're basically raping the pen's sweet spot and writing faster than the feed can keep up with. No wonder the pen can't follow you. I have used this pen in the past and NEVER had this problem. The pen is reasonably priced (in Europe), in the US it will probably be different.
I think you are not giving this pen the value it has. Ok, not first class, but decent. I advise you to take writing lessons. In addition, I advise you to rate each pen pro rata. I am currently more concerned with the top segment, but I am now considering purchasing this Diplomat. And that with the memory of the past, when I couldn't afford the more expensive pens.

Watch the follow up video and you'll find that A. The pen was faulty, acknowledged by Diplomat; B. I gave them high marks on customer service; C. The new nib unit is excellent and the review adjusted accordingly.
I don't expect Pelikan quality at budget prices. Those familiar with the channel know each pen stands or falls on its own merit.
Funny you mention Caran d' Ache. The worst nib I've had was theirs, and I used a Magnum nib to bring it up to par.

@@JG3Reviews thanks for your reply. Even a Mercedes can have problems... I even don't like Caran 'Ache.... I have one fountain Pen, but I am not hilarious about it... Try a Otto Hutt for a change.
