LynchPins is a David Lynch-themed podcast covering a different David Lynch film each month, from least-Lynchian (The Straight Story) to his most "Lynch" work (Inland Empire?? Eraserhead??). Hopefully we can make Lynch's work more accessible to those who've been too intimidated to get into him, but there's also plenty here for the Lynch superfan (you know who you are, you weirdo). Hosted by Maggie Mae Fish and Adam Ganser.
This episode covers Lynch's 1999 family drama, The Straight Story, starring Richard Farnsworth as an old man who drives a riding mower across multiple states to reconnect with his ailing, estranged brother.
Every episode on Nebula is uncensored and extended, plus they drop a week earlier than UA-cam. Join us next month for The Elephant Man (1980).

Which Lynch movie are you most excited for us to cover?? I'm reeeeeally looking forward to talk about Lost Highway...
Wild at Heart
Inland Empire!
Mulholland Drive. It might just be the most outwardly Lynchian Lynch film that Lynch has ever Lynched.
Plus I just like hearing what people think about the Winkie's scene.
You know the one.
Lost Highway is one of the ones that disturbs me most.
Honesty, I’m just excited in general. Followed the channel for a long time, and I watch a lot of Lynch. Match made in heaven for me (and I will get the nebula come pay day Friday - I have some Jacob Geller to watch too…)
Edit: Inland Freaking Empire - in all the best ways, fuck that film
Fire Walk With Me
David Lynch has actually said he considers this his most experimental film because it was shot in sequence on the same road that Alvin Straight himself actually rode on.
31:37 “The conflict is not can he find help; it’s will he accept any help…”
I agree. This script easily could have been cloying, but it never is. Instead, it’s subtle and engaging (despite the simple plot), owing in large part to Lynch’s direction. It’s one of the best character studies I’ve ever seen on film.
That opening is everything! Staring at each other, drinking coffee, and trying not to laugh. LOVE IT!!!
MID ARE YOU KIDDING
The thing that I love most about The Straight Story is that it is such an unburnished, but earnestly loving portrait of humanity. People are portrayed with quirks and rough edges in full view, but every one of these are shown with such a deep and unashamed affection that shines through just about the entire movie. An absolutely fantastic film and not one to be passed over in Lynch's filmography.
I also have gone blind enough to not be able to drive and am also likely close to death...hopping on a riding mower and driving it long distances for some spiritual mission is definitely something I could see myself doing. In fact...I recently sold all my meager belongings, built an ebike and a solar powered camper to pull behind it and am just about to embark on a spirtiual journey of my own.
💖💖
Wish you the best of luck with that ❤️✨
Dude, nice, no one ever talks about this wonderful movie - one of the only movies that's ever made me fully cry.
My friend and I watched it when it popped up on Disney+. We sat in stunned silence when it was over. An absolutely beautiful film.
I'm glad we're finally getting a video by video discussion of David Lynch's Weather Report.
It's really some of his most thought provoking content I've ever experienced on my phone.
😡💢
I think of The Straight Story as the Lynch movie you can show your mother.
it's kinda a bummer you guys missed the plot point that Alvin's entire journey is actually a vivid hallucination that takes place within Sissy Spacek's imagination while watching a sprinkler...
love this, can't wait for more in this series! Maybe you guys can find that darned highway!
The close up face cuts...just the appropriate level of awkwardness...so cozy
Can we all agree that the casting for Alvin's brother, Lyle, was perfect?
That was so polite of you to match his beard color with your hair!
We definitely need more Straight Story representation in the best of Lynch convo. Got to see it at a drive in last summer. Such a beautiful movie.
@@maxwelllegere1483 have you seen inland empire 😅
@@maxwelllegere1483 If you say so 😅
Criterion needs to get their hands on this movie immediately. It is criminally underrated in Lynch's filmography!
I doubt Disney will ever let that happen
@@evilincoln23hey, you never know. They’re not exactly interested in physical media anymore (as evidenced by offloading all of it to Sony) so they might just do it at this point. It wouldn’t be the first Disney movie in the collection (Wall-E).
@@NicheCaesar fair enough
Jay Bauman on the Podcast when!!!!!!?????
Also very exited!!!
that's the second small boy from Milwaukee I think about today (first one being Kotz, poor guy)
I love this man with all my heart. He’s been the biggest influence on me ever artistically.
Our local theater had Lynch month in February with a new film every day and my wife and I got to. We saw Eraserhead, Wild At Heart, FWWM, the Twin Peaks pilot. They also showed everything else except this and Inland Empire.
Omg, new Maggie video just dropped! :D
Yeah, David Lynch's work has also inspired a lot of things in the gaming industry. Silent Hill took a lot of inspiration from his work. Believe it or not, even The Persona series took some things from his work with the Blue Room, which is obviously their version of the Black and White Lodges.
Yep. Life is Strange has several overt references to Twin Peaks and a whole TP vibe. Alan Wake and Control are very “Peaky” too.
@@electricwater8211 links awakening was inspired by twin peaks as well
The Blank Check boys are going to cover Lynch, as he won their March Madness bracket. (Probs end of summer at the earliest)
This should make a wonderful partner piece to their pod.
That meditation-bit at the end there was actually relaxing and nice.
I felt like aside from not wanting to inconvenience people that the reason he didn't want to go into their house is he's aware of his hygiene, especially because of the trip, and doesn't want to sully their house in that way when they are showing him kindness - and of course struggling to feel worthy of help and wanting to do this trip under his own steam
I haven’t been this excited for a series since the Return!
Also, I love the little Lynchian easter eggs in the background.
Woah a really intense staring contest in the intro
This is such a beautiful film. I remember being particularly touched by the couple that offered to drive Alvin all the way to his destination and wanted to stay in touch with them. The kindness expressed by pretty much all of the characters is so moving. Great episode, and looking forward to more!
So excited to see you two discuss Lost Highway and Inland Empire!!
I keep forgetting to look at the video, because I'm so used to just hearing you guys talk on your "I'll Show You Mine..." pod, but this is a lovely setting. Very much looking forward to the Lynchian madness that will come
I love David Lynch, and I'm a big fan of Maggie. So ready for this!
SO EXCITED!! I'm a huge fan of Lynch movies, despite not always piecing everything together. Any film that sends me down a rabbit-hole is an instant favorite to me.
I saw Eraserhead at a rep theatre in Hamilton Ontario in 1978 when i was 14 years old and it re-wired my head for the rest of my life. I have been obsessed with the man's work since that day (and I LOVE DUNE!!!!) - but 'The Straight Story' is something different - it's not only my favorite of all his films - or any film for that matter - it is my favorite THING in this world (food, album, colour, memory, whatever) - i have watched it more than any other movie in my life - maybe 40-50 times? I can shut my eyes and play the entire movie in my head from memory. When the dog barks, when the bee stings, when i'm feeling sad... I go to this film for solace.... Norm McDonald said he loved this movie and called it 'A Hard G' - which i think is perfect... my friends know not to bring the movie up in conversation or I will go nuts and start weeping like an Irishman at last call... and i think it is his MOST 'Lynchian' thing... the acting by everyone in this film is so beautiful and heartfelt - and it is so slllloooowwww - and Angelo Badalamenti's music is Heaven-sent.... and it's Freddie Francis's last film - it's the 'Easy Rider' for the elderly... Dear God I love this film - thank you for posting this. :)
Still havent seen this one yet but super excited for all the other episodes to come on this series.
just the podcast I needed!
Yay!
A new way to enjoy the mind of Maggie Mae Fish!
I've heard Ganser on several Small Beans stuffs.
This is very cool.
So Hyped for this Show, 2 of my favorite people discussing 1 of my favorite directors
I love absolutely everything about this
I'm so happy you're doing this Maggie lol genuinely. Just finished my Twin Peaks rewatch as well so I'm very heavily in the mood for Lynch. That said, The Straight Stiry is a great place to start. Not only because it's his most "simple" film, but because I really feel more people must see it!
Also, I've only now put together just how much you look like Anya Taylor Joy and sometimes sound like Emma Stone, and I feel like I should've noticed that much sooner lol
Anyways, I hope to see your script come to life
So…Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, Eraserhead(!), and THIS is his most experimental work? Makes me wonder how Lynch defines “experimental”.
He probably went way out of his confort zone making something that isn't weird, who knows?
The thought had occurred to me, but I think @MouseChili answered that question.
Maggie, at around 17:36 where you call the group Yuppies! haha thats the worst description of a yuppie ever lol! Does Yuppie mean the same thing as it does here in England? i just imagined 1980s yuppies sat in a huddle, just made me laugh! Anyway Great video as always. btw Straight story was always one of my favourite Lynchpins glad you reviewed it!
The story about the sniper rips my heart out when i rewatch this movie
I had no idea what to expect and I enjoyed this first instalment so much! I love that you've structured your reviews because I feel like I'd really need structure and organization to make sense of David Lynch's films! And I like the dynamic you have with your friend Adam Ganser! Your friendship really shows and you compliment each other well. I'm looking forward to more instalments.
Dangit Maggie, I said I was gonna subscribe to Nebula for this. You're enabling me! Enabler!
This was a delightful first episode and I can't wait for the next one. Now if you'll excuse me I have a straight story to watch.
The most Lynchian scene in this movie is the night time shot of the grain elevator at 23:44 with the sound of the elevator suddenly cranked up.
as a fan of "ill show you mean if you show e yours" this was a real treat
Wild at heart, lost highway, eraserhead for the movies.. but twin peaks.. that is the 3 part gem I am waiting for.
love this. such lovely vibes and great reads of the movie. hype for the next ep!
The title segments with the slow fades just killed me.
Oh I can’t wait for Inland Empire
"Dune" was a glorious mess while being made, but even though Lynch disowned the longer TV cut and was not happy with the theatrical version, it is still very Lynch when it comes to the visuals.
Thanks for an interesting and enjoyable video 😊
AHHHH THIS IS EVERYTHING IVE EVER WANTED. MAGGIE MAE FISH MY BLADE IS YOURS
You could also take Alvin’s refusal to enter people’s homes or accept help is a form of self-imposed penance.
I made this comment before you bring it up lol
I grew up in a Transcendental Meditation community and went to a school that practiced it 3 times a day. I have mixed feelings about it, but I think David Lynch captures some philosophies I learned as a kid in a way that doesn’t feel preachy. They certainly have a transcendent feeling.
You two have such weird chemistry, and I love it!
This was superb. So looking forward to the rest of these. I wonder, do you have any plans to cover the Lynch Frost sitcom On the Air? Would love to see that oddity get a bit of attention.
if we cover it, it'd be after we do all his movies and Twin Peaks, so it'd be quite a while until we get to it
I don't mean to destress anyone, but there's a possibility that Maggie may take part in fishing.
Finally a new reason to look through all Lynchmovies again. Most excited? Maybe Wild at Heart I've seen that film so many times, I want to see what I've missed 🤩
I love this movie for how warm and inviting most of it feels, like going for a walk or a drive on a sunny day, while also hitting you with deeper thoughts and emotions that stay with you. I'm still not sure how a bunch of executives at Disney saw Eraserhead and thought, "Let's get THAT guy to direct our charming family film about an elderly man taking his lawn mower on a road trip," but I'm glad they did.
Anyway I'm excited to hear you talk about Wild At Heart, which I just recently watched for the first time, and Blue Velvet, the problematic fave of bisexual film nerds everywhere.
The _Yes, and_ mentality is strong in this house.
That poor woman related to Chuck Gassley ("deer still dead" politician dude)
Great idea! Looking forward to all of them.
I thought I'd never need to watch another podcast but this convinced me otherwise lol
good film, probably the most Lynch film ever.... it's a man walking from one end of a screen to another, and we are rewarded for our patience.
17:55 So true. Ever hear the phrase, “It was a barn-burner”?
A Building on Fire is Entertainment Anywhere sounds like a great Midwestern post-rock band
I LOVE THIS
Loved this movie and enjoyed the deep dive into it!
The Black Hawk Bridge, which is where they shot Alvin crossing the Mississippi River, is being torn down and replaced soon
i already wanna watch the next one!!
Big contrast between Mulholland Drive and this. The former described as a "poison Valentine to Hollywood", a running theme through a lot of his work, while The Straight Story is a "love letter" to rural, heartland America.
Getting to know Lynch. Thank you.
The endless hours I spent with schoolfriends in the 80s in discussions of Eraserhead…
Severely intimidated by the shoes on sofa situation. Comfort is truly an illusion
Twofer. The algorythm must be tithed, but Maggie can be admired.
Literal elements.... as STORY elements????
Yeah, for Lynch films, that tracks ^_^b
You mentioned The Odyssey, but I see a bit more Dante's Purgatorio.
It seems conversations I have with friends of mine. But I'll incorporate the weird stillness in between.
great job. adam was great. jokes great. analysis great. tone great. just great
So I thought David Lynch's Straight Story was the name of the podcast, safe to say I really need this content to befriend the guy at the corner.
When I was a kid, I used to go with my Babcia (grandma) to the markets to buy groceries.
She would haggle in ways that are frankly deplorable. I, as a child, knew it was incredibly inappropriate - like offering £5 for a lamb leg worth £45, and then playing the poor widow card.
Everyone loved her. The butchers, the bakers - and so did I.
epic
Engagement for the engagement god!
I SUPER read Alvin's daughter Rose as autistic. Not just "a speech impediment." Which I thought hit extra hard when it was revealed that she had her children taken away from her. I know so many great parents who have autism and it seemed clear she loved her kids.
It irked me a bit but the burning building was a firefighting exercise! Y'all kept saying it was a random building on fire, which, fair, but it was a planned burn by the fire department. That's why those people were watching it, it was a scheduled thing. I DO think it narratively brought us back to thinking about how Rose's kid was hurt badly in a fire. It was likely a traumatic/stressful time in Alvin's life where he felt powerless, like how he is losing control of the mower down a hill.
I'm looking forward to more episodes :)
About the dudes watching the fire: Just a controlled practice fire on an old house in the neighbourhood I guess, just a thing that happens and sometimes you're just there to see it. Why not enjoy a cold one and enjoy the nice fire. No symbolism other than "such is rural life" :)
Was THIS the "something you might like" when I made the off-hand desire to see MMF crossover with RedLetterMedia?
I ask cuz I know Jay loves Lynch, and if possible I feel he would come on this show in a heartbeat to discuss Lynch!
Fantastic as always Maggie! Save Martha.
P.S. I sure hope you do some new Unrated's soon!
This is NOT the red letter media thing I was talking about 🤫
I think it's brave to start this series in the current climate not on Dune but on the movie about a guy riding on his lawnmower.
I kind of get why Lynch says it's his most experimental film (and I believe he himself explained that once). There is a tender balace in terms of the emotion that seemed more delicate than in his previous films (maybe the closest case is The Elephant Man) and that's why he felt he needed to experiment to achieve that.
I'm waiting for the next episode!!!!
There is also an Opera of this same story that Dan Moses Schreier made a few years before this movie called The Shoulder
this is so catered to me content that it feels illegal
Your work on Lynch has been some of my favorite, so this is very exciting. The Straight Story is such a beautiful film and (imo) no less Lynchian than any of his other work, despite the lack of dark surrealism. I don't think it's too surprising that Lynch would describe this film as his most experimental if you consider his perspective and contrast it with his back catalogue at that point.
I love stuff like this. Thanks for also uploading it here. Also are you only covering his feature films or will you be coving his shorter projects like Dumbland and Rabbits too?
We might cover his short films as a patreon/Nebula exclusive, both as a thank you to our subscribers, but also because the shorts/Rabbits are pretty niche so they might get buried on youtube. We haven't decided yet tho
@@MaggieMaeFish Thanks for answering my question Maggie!
Are you going to do his Duran Duran concert film? I just finally saw it yesterday, and I there is enough there to dig into.
No plans on covering it yet (gotta get through his movies and twin peaks!) But we do want to do bonus episodes on his random stuff and short films
Old alone break, Old together strong.
MaggieMaeFish-sticks! I'd buy 'em 😆🎣
Hell yes!
All of those transitions are wonderful, well done.
Also ay Maggie can you yell at Mubi to make them add Next Sohee? I signed up to watch it (cause a googlin' says it's available on Mubi!) and then it turns out... it is not!
Iowa...Wisconsin...okay, you hooked me.
Definitely my favorite lynch movie
Edit: 50:30 I feel vindicated.
One of my favorite things about Lynch that not many people mention is his music. The landscapes he creates that feel unique to him through sound have a lot of comparisons with his film work.
Surreal, something that sits in that second layer throughout his music that carries through a track even if it's not the immediate focus of it. It's very dream-like at times, and i know that's a vague descriptor, but I don't know how else to describe his musical work as an entity.
Your seqment transitions are SO GOOD 😐
