    Welcome to rice cooker family!
TLDR: Rice is life so hits different for cultures that don’t eat it on the daily. Great to see you experiencing the best of rice. Wait til you discover Japanese grain varieties, makes English rice taste like nothing.
Most rice cookers (including old school ones with one switch) work with an internal thermostat, water evaporates = rice done. Mine’s been passed down by my mum and is 30+ years old, still going strong, sits proudly on the counter.
I’m guessing these new age ones do the resting bit for you? We let the rice sit (power off) for another 10 minutes before lifting the lid of ol’ reliable, finishes the cooking and gives you a better texture.
May I suggest before serving, fluff the rice in a slow slashing sort of motion, means you separate the grains from themselves without smushing them.
If you don’t have a rice cooker, this is how mum would tell you: (the short notes version)
Do everything the same as you woulda rice cooker but in a pot with a lid on the stove. Bring it to the boil and simmer untouched until rice is done. Depends on your pot, rice and amount so the more you make it you’ll know when it’s done. The simmering sounds different when all the water evaporates. Let it sit for 10 minutes before fluffing, separating grains and you’re good to go. This applies to short grain, works with jasmine too.
    Love your friendly neighbourhood C h i p

Basic rice cookers actually don’t work on a timer - they have a magnet which triggers when the bowl reaches a certain temperature (once the water has boiled off, the temp will rise).

Does it really come with a steamer basket as you say? wherever I look for that info it says that this model doesn't have this accessory. Does anyone cook vegies together with the rice? I'd like to add a broccoli or an egg plant at the end of the rice cooking so that it is steamed at the same time as the rice is being prepared. Or you just put it on top if you don't have the basket?

So I work In coffee too. Also, rice is my new nerd thing since covid 19 hit. My girlfriend is from the Philippines and what she doesn’t know about rice isn’t worth knowing.

Nice to meet you Dominic. I quite like the Toyama Koshihikari rice. It’s what are used in the video. I got the rice cooker because I really struggle to cook decent short grain for Japanese dishes. Do you have any rice recommendations I should check out?

      I can’t believe it took a month to get a notification. 🙄
We use a few rices, standard white rice for savoury is Green Dragon Thai Jasmine rice.
Then for sweet dishes we use Thai Hom Mali rice from green dragon.
Nishiki is our go to sushi rice
And finally glutinous rice by Chewy for the home made Mochi

The only thing I want to know is it better than a premium all in one pressure cooker type unit. I have not seen any reviews of this. Only people comparing a non loose lid type rice cooker (old fashioned western type one). Also worth mentioning most people who want authentic Asian rice will use jasmine varieties which these machines tend to prefer.

Thanks for the review :) I'm really confused about all the different models. What's the difference between NS-YQS10, NP-HCC10 and the NP-HBQ10? Age of model maybe or EU/UK/US plug perhaps? Anyway it's really hard to find the top model Zojirushi rice cookers for sale in Europe at the moment :/

The NP-HBQ10 is as the NS-YSQ10, but adds induction heating technology. I have that very model, which I acquired by chance on eBay. Like most Zojirushis found in Europe, they're likely to be grey imports, as Zojirushi doesn't have an official European subsidiary. The NP-NCC10 is the American 120V version of the HBQ10, sold by Zojirushi America.

    • @dallen521
      @dallen521 Рік тому

I would love to know how a grey import works (100 V in Japan, 220/ 230 V Europe), unless a step down transformer is used.
I don’t think there is a voltage switch. Any ideas?
