Suggestion: Cut your first coat with mineral spirits on a 1 part BLO: 1 part mineral spirits. This will aid in penetration and speed up drying. If your stock is lighter than you want it to be while it is still wet, add some dark walnut oil based stain into the next 50/50 blend. Repeat until it reaches the desired color and depth. The apply your straight BLO or tung oil. The cut layers will polymerize faster and help keep the outer finish from getting tacky when hot. Tung oil top coats are best for a protective matte finish. Tung oil and Boiled Linseed oils will naturally darken with age.

I was looking at one of mine the other day. I noticed what i think is a serial number scratched onto the bolt. If that's what it is it means my receiver is a H&R from '57, my trigger assembly and barrel are late 40's SA, and my bolt is from an early '42

Looks like a European beech stock. That wood is light and common over there (particularly in Italy). The BLO wont change the color much (stain would) but I like the lighter, mismatched look. The handguards are probably walnut.

You can easily cut this video down to just couple of minutes. An exorbitant amount of time was devoted to showing just couple of steps.

@henryng9406 you can also easily not decide to watch it if it's not for you.

Why BLO over Tung oil? I thought the army switched due to BLO not always curing.

As I understand, it was most likely due to not having enough time to wait for BLO to cure. If applied in multiple thin layers, and allowed to seep/dry, BLO is great.
