Last year, in Itaewon, Seoul, a 20-year veteran taxi driver claimed a sudden acceleration incident. The taxi driver was usually so cautious about sudden acceleration that he had a dash cam on the pedals on his vehicle, but when we obtained the dash cam video we saw something totally unexpected. This is the first time a pedal dash cam video has been released to the public.

This footage shows the dash cam view from the Ionic taxi driven by driver A (mid-60s).
His car suddenly accelerates as he slowly turns right in an alley
The car speeds up rapidly, and even the wipers activate.
After 120 meters of acceleration, the taxi crashes into a house wall and stops.
Driver A claimed sudden acceleration during police interrogation, stating, "I kept stepping on the brake, but it didn't work."
We reviewed the pedal dash cam.
Driver A lightly presses the accelerator, and the car starts accelerating.
He lifts his foot, then presses the pedal hard, but it's still the accelerator.
Despite the acceleration, driver A continues to press the accelerator multiple times.
Even before the crash, he keeps the accelerator pressed.
He never steps on the brake.
This was a classic pedal misapplication, mistaking the accelerator for the brake.
The Korea Transportation Safety Authority presented the study results to the UN Economic Commission for Europe.
The UNECE is developing international standards to prevent such accidents.

"In creating these standards, Japan focuses on technology to prevent sudden acceleration from a stop, while Korea suggests technology to prevent sudden acceleration during driving."
The goal is to prevent human error through emergency braking systems.
