4. Machine Learning vs Materials Informatics

- Is Machine Learning the same thing as Materials Informatics? That's an important question and to answer it we should consider several aspects of each and ask if they are the same such as data size, task, data heterogeneity, uncertainty quantification, featurization, and interpretability. In this video, I make the argument that in each of these cases Materials Informatics differs quite substantially from traditional Machine Learning and therefore it is worth our time to investigate the subtleties of Materials Informatics.

I will begin my Bachelor's in Material Engineering this August, and many of your videos are very helpful. Thanks!
@@touchvaritnote good luck this fall! Check my playlists and you'll find a bunch of helpful content.
Every time I need to learn something as a materials engineering student , you are here to teach me. Thank you veryyy much.
My pleasure!!
Great vidoe! Great explanation! I've been into this field more than 3 years and can't be agreed more than this with you. How is difficult to extract the data with clear measuremnets!
Just found this series and your channel today - presentation is quite engaging and clear, I'm super excited to see what's coming next!
I'm working on how graph-neural networks can be used for property simulation and prediction (CS background) and this is such a great way to get myself situated in the field. Thank you.
It's super cool that you make these videos public! I'm sticking until the end of the series!
🤟🏻
Man u r a hidden treasure which I came across it on Google pody, and since then u r my morning company in the bus in my way to the lab in campus,
Greetings from Palestine
💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 share it around buddy!!
Hello Taylor, really glad you are making these videos. I am a materials engineer from Bangladesh and really looking forward to dive into materials informatics field. I hope you will make more contents for aspirants like myself.
Thanks! I'm so glad you are enjoying them. I will be posting new videos in this playlist all semester.
Thank you for putting this series together. I’m trying to build an algorithm for annealing anomalies that contribute to failed tensile and yield in testing. I have zero experience in data analysis and trying to teach myself ML is difficult, even with the plethora of ML information available. Your specific focus is a godsend.
Sounds like a cool and useful project. I'm glad to help
Thank you so much, Taylor. I'm preparing the research proposal. And your video gives me an overview of materials informatics, which is very helpful.
Awesome, good luck on your research proposal! I need to work on this series a little bit more. I start teaching it in 2 weeks so it'll be finished by the end of the spring semester 😂😂😂
Love this series and eagerly waiting for new uploads (material informatics)
More coming soon! On vacation this week.
This was rad! Eye and mind opening! Thank you for this course!
Thanks for watching! Share the channel to help me grow
Excellent video, very well-made case for treating materials informatics applications separate from general ML methodologies.
Right? And every year we get new mse specific tools
Thanks for the videos, I really like your perspective about material science
Thanks man!
Really enjoying the series! Hope you create a video exclusively on material databases.
Next video!
@@TaylorSparks Really excited for the next video.
Hello Taylor sir, I was watching these videos without focusing on your name then suddenly I noticed the name Taylor D sparks and thought "hey! Is he the same guy whose work on structural, dielectric properties etc of NiCr2O4 which I have followed extensively for my PhD work". So, I googled your name and hahaha it came out you are the same guy. So good to see you again. 🙏
Oh that makes me so happy. I did that paper when I was a postdoc and it was a really fun project to work on.
EXtreamly Thankful for ur efforts n videos its been 3 weeks since I was searching info relating Material Science .It would be evn more helpful if u post a video abt SchNet model. Keep Rocking Bestest wishes..!
I think I do a basic comparison in this video. ua-cam.com/video/3OnXKQwczJM/v-deo.html I will be teaching a workshop on graph networks at MRS on Nov 26 if you are attending.
@@TaylorSparks yeah sure ,Thanks evn for the link shared ,and please post a video on SchNet model(SchNetpack ,...) Pymatgen
I am Searching a topic for my thesis on ML materials sciences. Please suggest any approachable and scoping topic.
Is it weird that I am binge watching this stuff?
🤣🤣🤣 no weirdness in that at all!
@@TaylorSparks I am finding your videos extremely beneficial. I'm an experimentalist myself but I certainly appreciate your hard work and generosity in making these videos available on UA-cam.
Wooohooo
Thank you, any good survey papers or thesis out there for material science?.
What topic?
@@TaylorSparks For material informatics.
@@TaylorSparks Any research groups working in this area?.
