Handpan & Ghattam
@arvysinghz & @ujjwal.live
Those who don't know... The ghattam is a percussion instrument used in the Karnatic music of South India. A variant played in Punjab and known as gharha as is a part of Punjabi folk traditions. Its analogue in Rajasthan is known as the madga and pani mataqa. The ghatam is one of the most ancient percussion instruments of South India.
The term handpan first appeared online in the fall of 2007 on the website of an American steelpan producer Pantheon Steel. It was used to describe its own development of a new instrument which was launched as an alternative to the Hang.
An alternative term used by some builders and players is Pantam. It is said to be a combination of the words Pan and Ghattam, two instruments which influenced the creation of the Hang.
So ghattam is one of the reason that handpan became the first beautiful melodic percussion.
