Hey Alex, yeah, mold is bad, but at least you found it. Unfortunately, manufacturers use the bat insulation in the walls of RV's which when it gets wet, it is near impossible to dry out. My advice to you is to re-seal the roof to avoid any further leaks (There are roll on vinyl coverings (Liquid) which will do the trick - check the edges where roof meet the walls to endure there is no leaks into the top of the walls, and use RIGID insulation in the walls and ceiling to fill the void, which will not hold the damp. Top down is the way to go. Nice to see a 'young' person taking the time and energy to renovate this old jewel. Time, patience, and a little elbow grease will make a lovely, comfortable and safe campervan for you and Layla. Good on you!
He needs to take the heater out of the case. That type of heater isn’t meant to be inside. It needs a turret plate and a hole cutting to the outside. That co2 exhaust gas will come inside the van 100%. Those cheap Chinese diesel heater exhaust pipes are known to leak and split.
First order of business is to stop the leaks before doing anything else or you get to do it all over again. I've restored four vintage caravans from the frames up and three motor homes and that was my first lesson. The second lesson was that just because the leak showed up in the front corner doesn't mean that's where the leak is. It could be in the opposite rear corner. Water travels the easiest path to the lowest point then spreads out. Consider either a separate removable diesel fuel tank connected to the heater pump or a portable fuel transfer pump that you insert into the fuel container that you're carrying and the other end goes into the heater fuel tank. They have a self contained battery that you can charge. Funnels are usually a problem as you try to hold it in place and pour the fuel at the same time. Great video. Thank you.
Alex, you didn’t get taken, you are a smart man, you knew this was going to be a bit of a nightmare. I feel confident you will make everything safe and awesome.
Hi Alex, I probably wouldn’t put the fabric back where you are going to sleep. It’s a dirt and dust capture. You want it so it can be wiped down. Sand and seal it then it’s low maintenance. You could put rubber flooring down if you wanted it a bit softer. Please also check behind the cupboard high up on the wall where the wall has rotted. If you put anything of weight in that cupboard it could come crashing down and accidentally hurt your beautiful Lela. Yes, I am worry wort but I believe in prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Hard but good work so far. Please also wear a mask and gloves. Your health is important.
Variety is the spice of life. You have an amazingly interesting life. Thanks for sharing your personal DIY camper renovation and your beautiful videography.
Love seeing some forward movement on Turtle. Living in a tropical climate, mold and mildew is a constant battle. Soaking things in vinegar (in spray bottle) helps kill it and keep it from returning quickly but long term solution would be to use antifungal primers if your plan to paint or cover the wood anyways.
We have always called it the balcony bed in our motorhomes over the years, just seems appropriate. You are doing a great job, just make sure that you check everything carefully as you proceed , putting safety first.❤
Alex if your sleeping in the same space as heaters and gas please grab carbon monoxide detector and a fire detector while your at the hardware shop and also fire extinguisher there’s small ones for camper vans.
You will receive plenty of advice on what to do and what not to do from people experienced in van renovation. My best suggestion is to keep enjoying the process. If you ever feel overwhelmed, take a step back, do something fun, and then return to it. I believe you and Lela will have some amazing road trip adventures in the future.
Unfortunatly that is all too common in older RVs. If you go to a real RV dealer they should sell Self Levelling LAP Sealant. DON’T USE SILICON. Clean all the old stuff off the seams completely and reseal the whole roof including all vents and caps. Single most important regular maintenance you can do to a camper. Talk to the dealer they will know what you need to do. You could have it done professionally as well but no idea what they may charge. Best of luck, looks like a fun winter project.
Sorry mate, but you bought the wrong diesel heater for 2 reasons. 1: it should be mounted in a proper turret which not only removes the risk of fumes blowing back in, but also to help dissipate heat from the exhaust. It gets very hot and can scorch wood easily. 2: The fuel pump ticking is going to drive you insane. It’s even more noticeable in the all in one units as the case turns it into effectively a giant speaker. The solution for you is to just go buy a turret and take this one apart. Put the combustion intake and fuel pump outside too. Mount the pump on the least hollow surface you can find underneath and make sure the exhaust is pointed away from the van. Straight down is not good. It needs to be directed towards the rear at a gentle continuous slope exiting just at the side of the van. The exhaust silencer also has a drain hole on one side so needs to be mounted with this facing down. The Combustion intake upwind of the exhaust and as far away as possible, but also with the filter head pointing towards the back of the van. You don’t want either getting too much water ingress.
Yep, seal the roof and around windows. When storing your rv use a plastic container with holes in the top. Fill with moth balls. Will keep critters and bugs out. Some around the wheels as well. Just leave time to air it out the next time you use it
You have great DIY skills and after watching you work I’m very confident you’ll be able to make this camper van very comfortable for you and Layla. You’re great at problem solving and it’s fun to watch.
You’re going to need either chemical dehumidifier packs, like Damp-Rid or an electric dehumidifier to keep mould and mildew at bay. Campers are notorious for growing mould, ( even those without leaks) especially when all closed up for over a week.
Alex that top left corner of your future bed as well as the roof and ceiling will need treating, water doesnt flow up from the seal you are talking about on the outside. It will flow down from the top corner above the driver. Its a fairly common leak spot. You can actually see the ripples in the ceiling as well as wrapping around the front of the van above the driver. Self leveling sealant for flat surfaces, lap sealant for vertical seals, butyl tape for gaps its a waterproof rubber very sticky tape for waterproofing. Soft spots occur typically under sinks, around water outlets outside, floor in front of the door due to wet feet and leaky doors, fridge vent outside if the old fridge had a condensation tube. Check outer cabinet door seals they often need to be replaced. Water heater holes often are soft from leaking hot water tanks. Best advice, remove any and all carpet especially in your bed area, lay a bit of laminate or vinyl flooring instead. Add a lip trim on the from of the bed area to hold your new matress in place instead. Good luck 😉
When dealing with mold, you need to be wearing a mask. Spores from mold can get into your lungs and cause long term problems. Before replacing the moldy wall, ensure the leak it completely sealed or your problems will return.
Alex, I'm so impressed with your knowledge and ability to tackle and accomplish the things necessary to get the van the way you want it for your purposes. You make it very interesting and fun to watch. You don't need to justify the difference in the content for me as long-term it's to support your film work. Great job!
I was afraid you'd find leaks behind the wall coverings solely due to the age of the camper. Not to worry, strip it down, wash it with bleach water. Then wash it again with degrease solution before putting on any sealer. This is exactly what Isaac Turner has just done for his bus build. See you soon!👍
Enjoyed the vlog share. whats good is you dont get angry stay nice and calm - or is that bit edited out haha. Admire you tackling these jobs single handed. are you experienced at this type of refurbing or just common sense self taught with a little help watching you tube videos. Not sure id tackle replacing gas heating system with new diesel type heating system so well done you. look forward to next episode.
The man of many talents….. thats why we like you! These jobs always take longer than you figure…. But one step at a time…. Then you will know that it’s all done right! 👌
You're making progress Alex. Hope the heater works as intended. Definitely get rid of the moldy damp wood and check the seals and roof coating on the outside. Over time those seals will harden and crack. Looking forward to your next video!
Great job, Alex!! So fun watching you troubleshoot and I’m learning, too! Not that I’ll be renovating anything, but it stimulates my mind. I can’t wait to see you start using it for its intended purpose eventually! Will be such an accomplishment!
Great job in starting the camper van. Heat, bed, and mold, good start and can all be fixed. Just know that by fixing it now you can save time in the future and an even bigger problem. Have a great day
Looks like you are well on your way to renovating your camper van - "Turtle"! Well done. Glad you found the mold so you can remedy the situation and be safe. Looking forward to your next video!
Congratulations on the restructuring and teaching some words I never knew existed And I don’t Know if they are in the dictionary😊😊. As I said before, you have a great sense of humor. I assume That is why Billy liked you so much plus your work ethics. You can do this and will do it😊
Alex, I believe you made a good purchase. The camper is bound to have certain issues that need taking care of but it’s something you can handle. The camper will be great for your work needs and you can take it anywhere in England or France and the best part is you and Layla will be more comfortable than in a small car.
Please wear a mask Alex, mould in your lungs can cause very bad breathing issues. It’s kind of good that you’ve had so much rain because you can really tell where the leaks are. Good luck on your renovations🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🙋🏼♀️
You have your work cut out for you, but you will enjoy the process ( most of the time!) and will be pleased with your results. One step at a time! Your calm patient demeanor will serve you well! Love from Pennsylvania, USA💕🌷🐻
Structurally things seem good. Just rip out everything that is wet. Those side panels may need replaced. Get all the bad out and you'll won't be redoing everything. It's better to slowly as cash is available to put things back together.
Well done Alex! You have done a great job in investigating the current status of the van and developing a good plan going forward! Looking forward to following your journey going forward. See you next time.
Alex please put a good mask on any time you sand or remove old fabric or carpet. You inhaled all the old glue. It all adds up and catches up with you in later years. 😮
Buy a bag of calcium chloride. Put 2 inches in a tall container. It will draw the moisture out. Then dump off water as needed. They are it to dry concrete in the winter monthes
Hi Alex. Please make sure your area from the diesel heater is sealed well from the camper and use CO 2 sensor inside the camper. Check the duct taping, it may not be to code. Concerned for your well being.😊
Alex, you’re a man of many talents and qualities, you’re doing a great job! Sadly, once there’s water ingress it tends to spread and mold then grows quickly. I’d definitely replace the wood and waterproof thoroughly. I’m really loving this series 👍👌🥰
This is going to get quite complicated. You need to wear a mask, even outside when dealing with dusty stuff and the mould, your lungs are precious!! I'm worried that the damp wood is part of the main structure, so taking it off could be a recipe for disaster. The seal on the roof could be compromised, so needs a proper investigation as that water leak looks quite bad. Also, that duct tape isn't going to last, might need something heat resistant. You are doing well, so keep going. 😁
Alex glad you found the mold but health wise you should have a mask on as mold spores can be breathed in and cause respiratory issues. Really want you to be safe in all areas of your renovation of your van. Your van will be great when it’s finished.
Good job Alex. it's fun watching The van renovations. Glad you are fixing it because that mold is gross, right where you'll be sleeping. Happy Holidays!
@26:25 If this was my camper I’d feel much happier if the heating outlet pipe had a proper secure, flexi pipe connector used instead of tape, I’m sure a plumbers merchant or Screwfix/Toolstation have these.

Don’t forget a CO2 detector/alarm with your new diesel heater, my brother was overcome(he survived )because of a faulty heater.
He needs to take the heater out of the case. That type of heater isn’t meant to be inside. It needs a turret plate and a hole cutting to the outside. That co2 exhaust gas will come inside the van 100%. Those cheap Chinese diesel heater exhaust pipes are known to leak and split.
@@Ian-ev5tg totally agree and commented same advice. And sorry to be anal here but it’s a CO detector required, not CO2
Alex the camera man turns into Alex the Handyman 😁😉 great job. Keep cracking on 🙂
Now I am watching van renovations along with the ones for the chateaus and convent. And loving it!!
You know how to do so much. Not just drones and cameras. I’m so impressed.

Use muffler tape to seal things up. The duct tape will fall off. Silver muffler tape is meant to handle the heat and more permanent.
Thanks!
No its an old van n not insulated like modern ones. Strip it back n start from scratch. What a project x
Loving the series Alex! Sorry that it’s been so much more problematic than you’d expected - but you seem to be handling it all very calmly.

Omigosh that's a total gut & rebuild.
But you needed to update functions.
There's probably a hanging shirts closet no one uses anymore.
Most recent rv's have a dual convection microwave ,& induction cookers.

ALEX! You got to the 17.5 that’s awesome …
I’m chuffed!
Glad you found all the mould Alex I daresay byoubwill tond more ❤
Looks like fun
It's better to remove the bedplack, so the acces to the work is mutch more easy Alex! Good luck!
Mask up, Alex!
You will get there! Your doing fine!
If you leave a dish with apple cider vinegar in the camper it will help to kill the mold
