Yes, I was in your position then a friend told me about this product. His advice to me are "Don't do it early in the morning since moisture (fog) may present overnight on your roof, and do it when the roof is cool (not high noon) so it won't dry up fast on you". He also use this same stuff on his leaking RV roof.

I was faced with a 15k roof replacement on my house in Tucson Arizona with a flat roof dark color material that starting to degrade. This product dramatically reduced the heat in the house and even on a hot day the roof is cool to the touch. That was in 2019 and the roof is still in good condition. I just priced this against new roofing materials. 30 squares..
Tropicool..$5,150 plus tax just for the silicone..no rollers, brushes etc !
New roof using GAF Timberline HDX with tar paper ,ridge vents , all new pipe covers..new drip edge etc.
    $4,890.
I can have the old tore off and new put on for $60 a square.
Henry has jumped the shark with their prices on this stuff.
They are waaaaaaaaaay to proud of that stuff ! When it first came out it cost less than half what it cost now in just a few years. Its no longer a viable option to a new roof .
I wanted to use it really bad but that price is just plain ridiculous ...not to mention all the work i would have to do putting it over architectural shingles...its just not an option anymore. Henry jumped the shark !

So far so good here. It hold up very well. I didn't see any bubble or damage area and mine doesn't leak. I think the best is to take your time and apply a thick coat. Do it when the roof is cool and dry. Don't do it early in the morning because of the moister from overnight. When I done mine, I start from 10AM to noon, and 4PM to 7PM. One bucket at the time. The first coat is probably the hardest since it will absorb this stuff because the roof surface is rough. Good luck on your project.

After hearing many roofers say don't paint your roof I was skeptical cause they may say that so as not to hurt their livelihood. One roofer pulled off the shingles of a painted roof to expose the plywood had retained moisture and rotted the plywood. Not sure if this is a possibility with a painted roof, but if true the money you think your saving may be lost with the added cost of repairs.

I emailed the manufacturer (Henry) with questions about Tropi-cool. In addition to other subjects, I was curious why the Tropi-Cool in gray is not referenced on the Henry website (only the white and tan colors are referenced on the website). I received a one sentence, snarky response that this [Tropi-Cool] product is not recommended for use on asphalt shingles. I'm glad that you do your own research. At the Home Depo where I bought it, they only have white and gray. I remember that it's the only product in the store mention aged shingle and asphalt under uses on the outside of the bucket. I didn't choose white because it will give your roof an all Christmas season look, but it's an ideal color because it reflected the heat better than darker color. But since I'm a retired Navy guy, so I chose gray like the US ship color. I'm not sponsor or get pay by any product I use in all of my videos so what you see are actual hand on in the video. When I starting to see my roof loosing the granules, I was just looking for a product to stop it because that is an indication that the roof is wearing out. So far it keep my house cool during the summer of last year and I think where I'm at, it's the end of the raining season and I have not notice any leak. So far so good so I can't complain. I will go up there in 2 months (1 year since I put that stuff on my roof) to check on it and give this video an update. If everything look good, I'm thinking paint the outside of my garage where it constantly under the sun and it's a warming room in my house.

@barefoot arizona I did. We're in South Florida. Our roof had some small leaks. Something had to be done. Our wet season starts in March, so in February I coated the roof. I hand painted every seam with a brush, on my knees, with BlackJack white elastomeric roof patch. This method was recommended by a homeowner in the Lowe's comment section. It took 50 gallons for a 1250 sq foot roof. Then I put 3 coats of Blackjack Kool-1000 over it. I did not use a roller, I used dollar store brooms and brushed on. Another youtuber turned me on to that hack - much easier than rollers. We've had a super rainy season and so far all's well.

Please don't take offense to this you did good ok. It would have been best to pressure wash the roof first with a mild spray bit to not remove the granules just the dirt on the roof. There is a lot of dust and debris you can't see. This helps with better adhesion and enables you to spread the product further saving you money on your final coat.
Now you want to purchase a white mastic product along with a 3 to 4 inch wide paint brush to apply the mastic. Not sure if Henry makes this product but Apoc makes it and it is called Apoc 581 silicone patch. You brush that around all your pipes and vents and all the areas that are cracked. Then you want to apply a 6inch wide layer of polyester immediately after you paint your first coat of the 581 silicone patch white mastic. You mesh it in the layer the same way a drywall installer meshes the drywall tape into his first layer of mud. Then once you complete that you paint right over the 6 inch polyester material with the Apoc 581 silicone patch. Basically you paint a layer of white mastic then the polyester on top then a second application of the white silicone patch and you done with that phase. Be sure to do that to all the valleys on the roof as well to ensure a good deal with no air pockets. Keep in mind the black tar is not so good to use because it bleeds a yellow color through the silicone paint. So always use my above advise. You can do this also for your gutters too. Just apply on the inside joints but be sure you pressure wash the gutters and sand off any rusted areas before to apply the 3 course prep with mastic and polyester. Once you have done all that you then are ready to apply your Henry's tropi cool silicone. Apoc's brand is known as 585 Armor Flex. Same thing as the Henry product you used. 2 gallons a square if I'm not mistaken to paint on the final coat. I hope this was helpful to thank you peace.

    "AFTECH 72
How many gallons did you spend on the roof and how many coats"
    Hi AFTECH 72,
I received your comment below through my email and for what ever reasons, it's not under or tie to the comments section of this posting. Anyway, for your answer, I use total of 8 buckets that = to 40 gallons for this roof. Each bucket is 5 gallons. When I started this project, I use to 1 coat with the thick roller (6 bucket/30 gallons), then I noticed that the gaps/cuts between the single section is not completely fill, so I end up using additional 2 buckets/10 gallons and the paint brush and fill all the gaps/cuts up. This house is 3 bebs/1bath home. I think if I decide to put a second coat on, it will be less because the first coat will give you a smooth surface. The first coat is hard because the single surface is very rough and when you roll the paint on, it will pick up all the loose grit/sand/granule (s) on the single to your roller.
Below are the totals supplies I used for this project:
    1 Roller stick (telescope type)
    1 Heavy duty Roller tip
    6 Thick rollers(12")
4 paint brushes (to fill up the gaps)
8/40 gallons of Tropiccool paint (Gray)
Keep in mind that I took me 2 weeks for this project and every time I take a break (musle fatige/cramps...), I start out the next day with a new brush/paint brush because the Tropicool will harden up overnight.

Hi. Thanks for sharing this. I've been thinking about doing this for some time but the roofing material manufacturers do not recommend using elastomeric coatings over comp shingle roofs. They told me it would "void the roof warranty." Also, the product you are using specifically states: "Not recommended over shingles of any kind." So my question is, how is it working for you? Notice any buckling, voids, any problems? I would like to understand why it is not recommended. Thanks again.

    • @truerenegade1095

I'm not sure where you get the info that "Not recommended over shingles of any kind." I look on the label of the bucket under Uses, it stated that it can be use for Asphalt roof, shingle roof, and others.... Anyway, I will go up there and check it out in August to see if it show any sign of damage. August is exactly 1 year since I put it on. So far since I put it on, I don't have to use AC so the house seem cooler and I have not notice any leak (hopefully not). I will inspect the roof in August and update this video.

@@truerenegade1095 Hi and thanks for getting back to me. That application specification came directly from a gallon can of Henry's Tropi-Cool 100% silicone white roof coating. I also found lots of info about doing this coating over shingles, like this from Miami: www.hometownroofingcontractors.com/blog/cool-roof-shingle-coating-think-again. So, I am doing my homework, because replacing a roof is expensive. Glad to hear you've not had problems. Please keep me posted. I would like to know, in scientific terms, WHY this is not recommended by the coating product manufacturers, by roofing product manufacturers as well as installers. Like you and many others, watching our roof shed its protective granules is totally depressing.

@@truerenegade1095 it clearly states on Henry's technical sheet, not to be used over asphalt shingles. When I queried this directly by email, Henry responded by saying the product is known to 'curl' shingles. Personally, I can't imagine why that would be so since they state shrinkage to be minimal so I feel they are simply avoiding any claims.
Contractors presumably, would prefer to charge for a completely new roof.

Henry's doesn't recommend using on shingles so keep in mind the lifetime warranty probably wouldn't be honored. They do recommend 1.5 gallons per 100 sq feet and waiting 2 to 6 hours between coats and applying coats 1 at north to south and the next east to west. Apply when roof is 50°f to 120°f. Prep work is most important. Good luck DIY'ers.

You are 100% correct that Henrys silicone Tropicool coating is not recommended for asphalt shingles ,im a retired Journeyman/Master roofer & Waterproofer ,im not a DIY guy ,i begged my neighbor not to coat his 10 year old 3 Tab tan asphalt shingle roof with this Home Depot product ,i tried to steer him twords buying a white ceramic coating made for coating asphalt roof products from Garland Roof Products ,he had needed 5 pails to coat his roof using that silicone garbage so at $99 per pail he wanted to get off cheap for $500 ,i tried explaining how silicone based products have very poor adhesive " bonding " issues ,i even showed him how easy it was to peel off the silicone caulking he used on his windows ,one yank and a 6ft stretch of silicone came off his window ,since he was hell bent on using junk Home Depot coatings i explained that there is a primer made that architects who still spec silicone spec to be applied to any surface any silicone based product touches ,he refused to buy the Johns Manville silicone primer after the " Experts " in Home Depots roofing & paint depts told him they never heard of a primer for silicone ,i gave up & watched him coat his entire roof twice & gloat over how nice it turned out ,the following spring showed exactly how silicone based coatings dont adhere to shit ,the Michigan snow had peeled huge 5x5 patches of coating off his shingles while other areas were left with a milky white washed look with brown showing through, now painting his roof every soring has became a yearly task ,FYI to all the do it yourself crowd ,in waterproofing each type material sticks best to the same materials, for instance most roofing shingles are asphalt based with ceramic granules set in the asphalt for UV protection ,you have 2 choices for a roof coating that will truly bond with the shingles ,#1 are asphalt based coatings with the #2 being a Ceramic based coating/paint .

I hope it works well for you. The number one problem that this will present to you is that your shingles will no longer function as shingles, and water that gets under shingles here and there may not be able to find its way out. This is not an advisable use for this product, but it is your house, so it's your call. You will not be able to sell a house if it has been treated in this manner.
