Still amazes me that he wrote these songs at 21 years old.

Love this song and this album. This is one of many favorites I enjoy playing on guitar as well. There are several gems on this LP, such as a sweet love tune called Corrina, Corrina and the heartfelt ballad Bob Dylan's Dream. Another one that's guaranteed to put a smile on your face is Talking World War III Blues. Hope you get a chance to react to any one of them.

Saw him at an outdoor concert in the mid 90s - what a treat. I'd been listening to him for 20 years by then and never thought I'd get to see him live. An amazing artist - an amazing human! Love the reactions!

This song is back to his folk music period, the earliest period of his career. Period is characterized by deep lyrics with Dylan alone, just his guitar and harmonica.

It's natural that listening to Dylan would make you feel that you "want to leave everything behind, cross the whole country": the male folksingers of the early 'sixties liked to romanticize the figure of the "drifter" who doesn't get tied down by conventional life, whether in the form of careers or relationships, and Dylan was the master of this pose. He had immersed himself imaginatively in the life of pre-WWII America, reading archived newspapers and listening to the Harry Smith 'Anthology of American Folk Music', and found material a-plenty to create word-pictures of an American life that seemed at once timeless and almost faded out of sight in the past. Unlike any other English-language song-culture that I'm familiar with, the US has a rich tradition of songs from the point of view of alienated, rootless wanderers, which gives many old songs a modern appeal; Dylan and other 'Folksingers' latched onto that, and wrote new songs that celebrated vagabond life.

By the way, that is Suze Rotolo on the FREEWHEELIN' cover, who was Dylan's girlfriend for a few of those years.

There's a little anger there. A little. Especially when he sings the title line.

"No self-pity, no regret"? This is a young man trying to disguise his hurt feelings - saying, in essence, "You can't dump me - 'cause I've already dumped you!!" I believe it would be at least a decade before the Dylan-persona in his songs would allow any personal responsibility for the failure of a relationship (e.g., "I took too much for granted ..."). Willing to stand corrected, if there's a lyric to the contrary that I've forgotten.

Goodbye Stranger, Free Bird, Long Time, Carefree Highway, all deliver the same message.
Nobody to blame no reason to be anything but bittersweet.
    But I gotta go now.
