The RE20 does deserve a better audio interface. The Scarlett 2i2 has weak and noisy preamps. The RE20 works well with my Audient ID44 without a pre-preamp.
Hi there! I have a question and I really hope that you will see this (and reply! ;-) ) because I've asked this question in various different forums but nobody has answered yet... _(It's long, so bear with me...)_ So, here's my situation: I have a microphone, an external compressor (a dbx 166) and a small Behringer USB mixer that I use as my audio interface, as it has a USB port. I'm not very happy with the mixer because, even with the gain turned down, it has quite a bit of floor noise. So I've been looking around and I think that the Scarlett 2i2 would be perfect for what I do/need. At the moment, the way I connect everything goes like this: - Microphone into the compressor - From the compressor into the mixer - From the mixer into my computer I know, this is not ideal, to use the compressor's make-up gain as my mic pre-amp. The Scarlett, from what I've read, has great pre-amps and great converters, so I'd like to use the Scarlett not only as my audio interface but also as my mic pre-amp. The question is: how can I use my compressor in this case? Since the Scarlett 2i2 has 2 seperate inputs, I was thinking about the following but I'm not sure if this would work (hence this question to you). Here's the idea: - Microphone into the 1st input of the Scarlett - From the Line Out of the Scarlett into the Compressor - From the compressor into the 2nd input of the Scarlett - Finally, from the USB output of the Scarlett into my computer and in my DAW, only select the signal coming from the 2nd input. Would this work? My fear is that what comes back from the compressor into the 2nd input, that that signal will also go out through the Line Out, back into the compressor and create a feedback. Is there a way to seperate what comes out through the Line Out? For example, the 1st input comes out on the left side of the line out and the 2nd on the right side? Can you do that on the Scalett 2i2? OK, this was long but I wanted you to know all the details and what I was thinking about, so that you could tell me what you think. Thanks for reading all this!
If you're married to the compressor, I would suggest the Mackie ProFX10v3. This allows you to use the mixer's preamps. Then connect your compressor to an "insert" at the top of the channel strip. This will loop your audio through the compressor and then bring it back into the mixer for EQ, etc. Then you can connect your computer to the mixer with USB. Basically, you're looking for a mixer or audio interface that has an "insert" for an external compressor.
Not sure I'm seeing the advantage of the expensive Cloudlifter when the hiss is still present. What am I missing? And what about cheaper alternatives like the Fethead? And does it make sense to instead upgrade the 2i2?
I was given this mic as a bday gift so I can start recording videos, it was given to me with MaonoCaster AMC2 NEO, and my question do I need software for the computer? So that I can edit the audio or will it be part of the video if I'm using a camera? Will I be able to use a phone as a camera as well?
Did you try it? I have the exact same combination but can't get a clean sound.. either the sound is to quite or the sound isn't clean. And I never saw this combination in a tutorial
Hello Team Kettner, Your videos are great and very helpful to me ! But i don't understand why this microphone is so now much expensive on amazon, i see it at more than 1000 euros it is normal ? I hesitate between the SM7B and this one. Do you have plan to do tutorials for how to properly set your microphone with voicemeeter for streaming ? (My voice feels weird when I listen to myself lol)
I also own the RE20 and I'm thinking of selling it. It just doesn't capture the crispness that I like with also the rich Bass where I want it with my voice. I know it seems crazy and I'm probably the only one in the world (based on how the mic is received here on YTUBE) who is just not overjoyed with it. Honestly, with my old setup and my silly Yeti Mic,...the end results are just so much cleaner and rich. I basically record my voice through the Yeti,...straight into Audacity, add one simple EQ filter setting and it sounds perfect. With the RE20, I run it through my Scarlett A/I, via a cloud lifter,...straight into Audacity and I have to spend way too much time fiddling and trying to fix the results just to get it close to the Yeti. Yes,..the Yeti can sometimes have more low level noise but not always. I don't hate the RE20, and obviously its a mic that has been around a long time for a reason, but I'm just saying it has not worked out for me. I think that new 5th Gen Rode mic that came out recently might be the answer for me. Anyone know what a good price would be for me to charge for a used RE20 mic with case?
This is a good way to decide mics. you need one that works for your voice 100% I have gone from RE20 to SM7B and BACK to RE20 due to the way my voice sounds on it. Compressors and Preamps do matter as well!
hey my fiend. I am contemplating buying the RE20, it’s a lovely mic. I have a Focusrite 4i4 3rd gen. Is that a good enough interface for such a microphone?
did you record turning on bass roll off switch? does it make difference? I want to hear about your opinion. Anyway, I just have bought re20 seeing your video :) nice review. thx!
Fantastic video, as usual. What are your thoughts on the bass roll-off switch? I find myself going back and forth on which sound I prefer, however I noticed EV is calling this switch the “kick drum” switch on the RE320. Just curious what your thoughts are on the two positions.
Damn, so I’m gonna have all that hissing even with a cloudlifter and interface ? That seems sucky. I don’t even get that much hissing with my yeti usb and it’s condenser . I’m trying to upgrade but not to hissing . What the heck 🐍
Hey! I’m an ASMRtist & I use Rode NT1A x2 & the scarlet 2i2. I’m unsure if I should use Air or not. I currently don’t. I record on Logic Pro. I kinda wing it with audio 😂 but I’ve recently learnt how to reduce my S sound in logic as some say it’s too harsh. I’m curious how to make my audio sound more intense like some other ASMRtist but I don’t know what they do. I usually have my gain at 1 - 2 o clock. I always use wav. Any suggestions please? Thanks so much
I would join a Facebook group for asmrtists or microphone enthusiasts and ask there. You will get many answers within an hour from experienced and like minded creators. I do it all the time for many of my interests and learn so much from great people. Very grateful
Between this Scarlett and the Yamaha MG10XU, which you recommend? I have the money to grab both if need be, but I would like to get this mic. I will also be getting the cloudlifter as it seems to help. Any help with this would be appreciated!
@@dryelene I got the Scarlett 2i2 and the Cloudlifter. Mic(EV RE20) gets plugged into cloudlifter, then the cloud lifter gets plugged into scarlett 2i2. Press the phantom power button on the Scarlett 2i2 and everything works great. Ive been really happy with it.
For comparison:
hiss without cloudlifter at 2:54
hiss with cloudlifter at 4:42

does the lav mic sound better than RE20 ? I think lav mic is more clear and less muffle
It is an excellent microphone ---- Good video - well done

Would I be able to connect this mic to my Sony EV-10 so the audio is picked up by my camera?

I've seen lots of recommendations online for the following setup:
Mic: RE20 --> PreAmp: dbx286s --> Scarlett 2i2 --> Computer
Any comments on that?
Yes, interested in this question too

@@CFett-fp4jh did you try putting the gain of the Scarlett all the way down and using the DBX solely to drive the mic?
I run this setup but with a UR28m instead of a scarlet. I don't utilize any effects from the UR28M.@@CFett-fp4jh

The 2i2 uses the same components as the solo. It is just a two channel version. They will both sound the same.

which recording software do you suggest for mac, EV RE20, Scarlett 2i2 combo?
Logic Pro.

Yes

Agree. 7-8 inches (18-20 cm) is the right distance for me (in this video, he stays at 12-13 inches, apparently)
