I think there’s a larger discussion about the decline of celebrity relating to why the VMAs are meh to be had. Pre-social media, we had much less access to the day to day lives of celebrities. To see a celeb on the red carpet or perform on stage after months of just hearing their song on the radio/CDs was exciting because it was a first sighting. Nowadays, we see celebrities everyday. We see them crying on Instagram live streams, the BTS photos/videos of every event they attend, etc. It humanizes celebrities in a way that wasn’t the case before, which is a pro. But the con is that we’re no longer as shocked or surprised by their presence.
I think that’s why Beyonce holds a lot of power and excitement still for our generation. Scarcity drives demand 🤷🏾♀️
not just crying on live streams, but actual mental breakdowns lmaooo every time they do that i'm like wow they're so relatable
Perfectly stated 💯
THIS!!! 💯
Epically perfect comment‼️
I get your point but I think I disagree. I love seeing how some of my favorite artists are just like me and are regular people. Something about watching my favorite artist grow as a person or overcome whatever adversity is something in and of itself. If I’m being honest the quality of artists is just declining these days as well. I remember when artists voices alone could be enough of a performance and I don’t see that being the case for a lot of the current artists.
The fact that Normani only had 1 week to do her performance is astounding
Not even a week girl ,2 days
EXACTLY 👏🏾❤👏🏾❤
@Cutelike Dolphins …did you miss the part where she had a week? The sheer fact she was able to do a performance at all in a week is incredible much less one with a whole dance sequence throughout it
Nothing of her performance was new... she already had that routine down and practicing it for months... the only thing they added was the lap dance if that.
@Cutelike Dolphins she did but for “some reason” the projector messed up and the audio. Instead of the red and white light background she was to have the same projection as the opening she had where the background was to mimic what her and the dancers did. Also her mic was on and was proven from live videos I just think MTV doesn’t like her.
“Always ready for the call.” Now that’s a WORD right there for somebody and somebody is ME 💙
Yes!!!
They can't say she always ready for the call and male excuses saying she only had a week. Those narratives don't mesh well
Hey everyone! I’m the founder of Macy V-TV Broadcast brand on my UA-cam Channel! My brand is to give those a platform to share their truth and talents. Segments such as healing journey, song association, drag queens, and etc! ✨
Chlöe hasn’t even been a solo act for a WEEK yet & people are dissing her for having Beyoncé inspiration in her art… while Beyoncé is her whole mentor??? As she develops as a solo artist, she’ll come more into her own style. Given the fact she spent the entirety of her music career in an acoustic-based duo, her dance-based performance at the VMAs was a great start.
Jack Harlow is attractive in general but I absolutely agree with him having big d energy. He’s confident but not cocky, comfortable with his sexuality plus isn’t homophobic like Boosie, and his voice alone is really nice. I need to go to Kentucky 😩

I’ll say this…Chloe’s performance did it for me. It was messy, it was all over the place, but it was LIVELY, it was raw, there was PASSION in her eyes. Many performers don’t have that.
worded perfectly!!!
It was not messy, wtf. That shit was rehearsed to a T
@@jayjohnson8403 it kinda was messy but that’s our opinion
@@terrellejones1809 I think you should replace the word messy with raw. She will tone her energy. It was similar to Beyonce's deja Vu performance. Chloe had to release that kind of energy on stage in order to become a better performer on stage.
I have to agree. It was indeed messy and unpolished but considering this was her first performance as a solo artist she exceeded my expectations
“Black Women carried the show” PERIOD.
The problem is that, I've noticed he's very critical with R&B girls that follow the Janet Jackson blueprint, but when they follow the Beyoncé blueprint then they are flawless and "slaying". For example, Ciara and Tinashe; he's always been very critical over their work
I’ve lowkey peeped tht myself
Yea I can see that
Somewhat changed after his new video
Had to come back to this after his recently Normani video left a bad taste in my mouth.
You are right.
If Normani gave the performance Chloe did, he works have dragged her for being unorganized and unpolished.
The kid is seasoned from years of touring. She can sing. I really think it’s because she doesn’t have an album he can’t critique. The fact that she only drops singles a couple of performances be burning him up lol.
The real winner of the VMAs is Sean Bankhead’s choreography.
Chloe’s performance dancing wise was not good at all lmfaoooo. Her fans are lying to her. Beautiful vocals though!
Normani getting her performance together in days will forever be iconic, the fact that it looks the other way around with some of the other acts sets her apart, she is a queen, her performance was top for me. Chloe also ate, she is a star! Doja gave me hella goosebumps and lil nas x was really entertaining...everyone else 😴
It was less than a week more like 3 days
@@ahmadpickett right it was exactly 3 days
Busta Rhymes killed it too tho
Lol. They had 2 weeks according to the producer.
I believe Normani had way more than one week to rehearse. She most likely had the routine on stand by just in case she got the invite to the awards show.
All in all it was really Chlöe’s energy for me. She poured her heart and soul out on that stage and the fact that the mic was ON gave her bonus points. But that’s just my opinion.
Chloe was all that!! Normani was good also!!
It was messy let's be honest
Messy ass concept but she did her best
@@littlemix2838 messy but she ate
Chloe also had pre record but also some parts live so it was more convincing
I am kind of sad that no one is giving Busta Rhymes his props. At the end that was a great nostalgic hype performance

And a lot of you gays try to act straight all your lives
The Beauty of both Chloe and Normani is that on top of their otherworldly talents, they have the stamp of approval from two TITANS of music, Beyonce (Chloe) and Janet (Normani). We love to see it

I wish Victoria Monét was invited!! She would’ve ate up a Coastin’ live performance! 🤎
I just discovered her the other week and I fell in love with Coastin'!
I am still not over that Jaguar's live performance.
I’m pretty sure Normani was singing live with a backing track. You can hear her breathing and dropping the mic and all of that, and she also messed up the lyrics during the second chorus. The only thing I think might have been lip synced was the whistle note. And that’s a MAYBE. Also people who were actually there in the audience put little clips here and there ok Twitter and it definitely sounded live to me. Her backing tracks just tend to be really loud, probably because she dances so hard. Y’all need to stop playing.
Your commentary on Chlöe literally has me in tears lmaooo. She ate that performance up; you can tell she was LOST in it. Love that!
*The fact that Chloe’s album is done and she’s just narrowing down from 30+ songs! My girl was working!!!!*
Normani was definitely not MEH. And the homage to Janet Jackson 👏👏
She needs to be herself. We've seen that type of performance before.
@@AnAdorableWombat I agree. Teyana has done it. Its tired.
I'm watching this in it's entirety, this was one of your best vlogs yet. You were so present, had me on every topic.
I love how you just said let's not give our favorite artists a hard time about using pre-recorded tracks with their performances, then went on a whole tangent about Normani doing it. She is giving you hard, technical and BEAUTIFUL choreo. Its not adding up miss thing cuz Doja was barely moving herself and there's no excuse as to why she was lipsyncing BUT YOU WONT SAY THAT
It's not about her doing it, it was that she didn't do it right. If you going to go with it give 💯🤷
Normani's mic feed is on twitter and youtube, she sang live!
@@Abymilde I would like to believe so as well😉
@@lorrainedillard4692 what didn’t she do right? Y’all are VERY nitpicky when it comes to Normani.
@@lorrainedillard4692 she didn’t have to do it right bc she didn’t use a pre recorded vocal
Gotta say, I'm a bit surprised by your honesty with Normani. You made some good points, Zach. But Imma need you to give that same energy to the other artists you shouted out (Chloe, Lil Nas, and Doja). They were by far the most entertaining of the night! But there was room for improvement for all. And I understand you're friends with these three, but they're not above critique either.
Every time someone has critique for Normani, you all get very defensive. Like girl. Ya’ll proclaiming sis to be iconic. Let her be judged by icon standards. In addition to that, she performed her music video - ESSENTIALLY! Did a beautiful job however… we know Normani can dance her ass off, but girl, you’re a singer - can you sing? We just want mama to sing. That’s all we want.
@@siviana2860 Who’s defensive? Zach’s critiques about Normani were valid. All I said was to hold the other three to the same standard.
@siviana whole point went over your head.. This whole video is him praising all the performers, and then picking apart Normani’s. (Cool. Everyone has their opinions), but Lil Nas & Chloe definitely had errors and room for improvement as well. Also mics weren’t on for more than one of these performances he reacted to ☕️, but why is Normani the only one being singled out?
@@tyrabullock9165 agreed. Stay wasn’t good live at all and Lil Nas was just as good as Normani but there was so much room for improvement. Chloe wasn’t the amazing either with the vocals but just good. Also I’ve heard others give hate for that Normani and Teonna scene
@@siviana2860 normani gets the hardest critique ALWAYS and her peers always get to slide and its fucking ridiculous. normani ATE her performance up. its crazy bc ppl treat normani like shes been a solo artist for years..

Thank you for giving been like this it’s spotlight!!! My favorite on the album!
Kinda disappointed in this. I wish you had the same energy for Chloe when it came to her performance like you did for Normani. Of course cutting her a tad bit of slack because this is her first live performance with an audience alone but this isn’t her first live performance…the energy was there but almost everything was everywhere. She’s a beautiful singer, wonderful performer but you couldn’t get 5 seconds into her performance without going on about her star power or randomly talking about “black women stealing the show” but Normani was met with critique after critique. Your favoritism is showing but saying this with love.
He salty cuz normani unfollowed him off insta😭
@@christineodogwu8042 I mean I don’t think that’s the case but I know there is definitely some favoritism for Chloe and Doja specifically. Not saying it’s colorism but it just feels like she’s being given more praise because of who her mentor is and the expectations we’ve already set for Chloe.
For me, Chloe was IT. Everyone featured here definitely did it but Chloe's entire existence was in that performance and she OWNED that stage.

Chloe is that bitch and has people shook! She was singing live. Best performance of the show, no cap.
She has that stage presence

Judging by drag queen standards, I guess. You guys are used to flaring around stage looking a mess and thinking y'all did suntin
I definitely relate to the “Meh” feeling. Back in the day the older artist kinda ushered in the incoming generation, where as now, they don’t even show up to the awards 🤣. You use to wait to SEE ALLL THE GREATS! but it’s not like that, there’s no camaraderie. Nicki, Gaga, Katy, Beyoncé, Rihanna etc they all had their own identities. All there music sounded different now everything sounds and look the same. So what’s to look forward to ? I’m excited about Chloe, Normani, Doja, and Nas ! I think for this generation there going to be “IT”! Especially is Normani goes to parkwood🔥. There are others but these are the ones on the charts!
I WATCHED THIS ENTIRE THING AND I SWEAR YOURE SO HILARIOUS I appreciate all the work you put into your videos
We don’t talk abt “Been like this” ENOUGHHH. Been like this and alone are so unappreciated and are some of the best songs on the album.
Normani's mic was definitely on during the performance. You can hear her breathing, the sound of it hitting the ground when she's dancing and when she threw it. Her breath control is there y'all, please stop acting like she hasn't been performing for almost 10 years
That's called a pre recording. They record it live from a rehearsal with the dancing.
@@Ibeenflew oh please. so does that mean we're body syncing now too? Perfectly timed audio with whenever the mic hits a surface? The mic was on and she had pitch correction (you can hear it when she talks at the end). I can't wait till the mic feed is isolated so you all can stfu
@@loneguy17 the choreography is the same first of all, why would the mic sounds be at different times?? And there are peoples who's job it is to make that shit realistic. Lip syncing is literally not a bad thing....why are y'all taking it so personally when you know Normani is not a strong singer.
@@Ibeenflewnone of this is worth the energy. I just found part of her mic feed on twitter. It was live vocals. Look it up yourself.

I need normani to do more performances where she just sings because people keep discrediting her and it annoys me.
I'm glad you brought up the hypocrisy of women on women and women acting like they like women when they don't and people being okay with it versus when men do it and Boosie being a hypocrite.

14:36 Thank you for talking about queer baiting and how the public LOVES it when straight people pretend to be gay and when an actual gay artist does something it is immediately an agenda and they're trying to influence the children. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
The comparison between Normani and Lil Nas X is perfect, because Lil Nas X was just heavily criticized for kissing his dancer in a performance.
I live in Taiwan and I've been trying to discuss queer baiting with friends and it is always shrugged off as not being a thing, so I'm very glad to see it isn't just me being sensitive.
I will say, this is one of Zach’s best videos recently, Zach is back and feeling like his old funny self, 🔥🔥
I watched the entire video! MTV needs you love!
Every time someone critiques Normani, I can’t help but feel like they’re discrediting her. She’s a very capable woman and puts in the time and effort. However, I don’t believe her performance was all pre-recorded, in the beginning, she sang live but also remember she’s a performer who literally puts on a show which means she dances and maintains her energy throughout. So pre-recorded vocals aren’t s bad thing.
I also think people need to cut her some slack because it’s almost like she’s not allowed any room for mistake or improvement. She’s not held to the same standards as her peers i.e. Chloe or Justine Skye. This was her first time using her own team for sound and mixing so of course not everything was perfect. But again that does not take away from the WORK and EFFORT she put in. She’s an evolving artist. Give her time. I feel y’all are expecting Beyoncé-grade artists right out the gate and that’s totally unrealistic idc 🤷🏾♀️
update: see how he had nothing but praises for Chloe and Doja Cat? Not a single critique. How can you not hold these women the same standard? And then he has the nerve to get mad when people call him a colourist 🙄 black people always seeking perfection in something they cannot control smh
right cause if you peep at the beginning she got the lyrics wrong. she said “this typa shit GOT you wilding” instead of “have you wilding” during the floor choreo, her mic was on and was heard hitting the floor. during the chorus before the bridge, she got the lyrics wrong. during the bridge her stomach and shoulders shows she was breathing hard and indicates she was singing live. at the end her mic hit the floor and it sounded like a thud. HER MIC WAS ON!
I agree.
Also, reading the comments people are saying she didn’t have joy or soul. But at the same time she delivered it gave what it was supposed to but they also didn’t want her and she probably felt unwelcomed. Her energy on her last performance at the VMA she was so upbeat. But wild side is a soft sexy vibe so as a dancer I see why she kept it clean and soft.

Yeah. Dark skinned woman always get the most critics in everything…u notice how zacky was picking at every little thing of hers but his excitement for Chloe was greater. Normani is a STAR! Period. Normani was singing live but she did have some backing track. There is twitter proof she was singing live. You could hear her mic feed on these videos and also if you listen thru headphones you can hear her vocals clearly. Also she messed up on some lyrics which couldn't happen if it was prerecords. The only time she wasn't singing was when she had her mic away from her mouth. Normani literally sounds the same way live as she does on her albums. Also her bending over while hitting whistle notes is something she does, even in 5H.
exactly in fifth harmony the girls used to bend in their choreo from time to time, it’s not impossible when you’re talented
normani had a mix of live vocals and a prerecorded vocals though. just like she did on the sweetener tour. she can definitely sing live. her mic feed is on twitter. the genius interview with her singing acapella proves that she definitely sung some of this live. just because normani hasn’t said she’s bi DOESN’T mean she’s not bi. cardi and meg got dragged left and right for that grammys performance keep it real!

I like how you speaks on originality. I think the problem is some of these artist like Chloe and Normani are so influenced by other artist that they lose their own identities or have trouble with trying to find their own. They both have the looks, voice, and stage presence to go far but if there is no originality there soon then it’s just gonna come off as copying.

There is a difference between being influenced and just studying someone’s style to the point you become that person in a sense. If you understand what I’m saying.

Chloe just started crying when she stepped off the stage 😭😭 she deserves everything she is receiving!! 💙
Wtf does crying have to do with anything
@@mariarodgers5387 she was crying Cus she was relieved all the work she’s been doing is finally getting noticed she did what she had to do and if ur a fan U know she’s very emotional😂😂
💙💙💙
I dont watch awards shows anymore so I appreciate that you did it for us...thx
Goddamn right I'm still here lol I don't even care about the VMAs but your commentary is everything!
This years vmas and met gala felt so un-Iconic, I’m used to seeing legends at the vmas and met gala, there was no Gaga, Katy, Beyoncé, Nicki, Lana, Lorde, etc….
The new generation can't hold a candle to those legends unfortunately
There was a white towel underneath normani when she was sliding and someone removed it when she stood up so i don't think it hurt her to slide across.
I love your energy so much.
I couldn't wait for your reaction to Chloe 🤣 she is beyond incredible I didn't have the words but you said it all 💗
Normani had the best performance that night
But they refuse to give her props and I hate it. I feel tired for her.
Lil nas actually had the best performance, Normani could place second tho, I loved her
Meh her Motivation performance was better
!!!!!
@@Lavishlydej the way they suddenly become so nitpicky when it comes to her critiquing every flaw, like the double standard is absolutely so unfair
You are absolutely right about Jack. Something about the way he carries himself, I just KNOW it's big!
Was waitin on ya! 💯💋
Normani definitely was not lip syncing. At all. Lol
If you look at the raw footage that ppl recorded from the audience you can hear that she’s actually singing
Normani messed up the lyrics twice. You think her being the perfectionist she is would leave that in a pre-record? Not to mention hearing the mic hit the floor. The critiques weren’t it for me.
Normani's mic feed is on twitter and youtube, she sang live!
@Envymiix it's cuz she unfollowed his fake self off insta🙄, and honestly I don't blame her he stay contradicting her in every lane it's tiring
DEADASS THEY LITERALLY DON'T KNOW NUN ABOUT MANI IF THEY THINK SHE'LL DO THAT. NOT TO MENTION THEY OBVIOUSLY HAVE NOT SEEN HER IN 5H PERFORMANING IF PPL ARE QUESTIONING HER WHISTLENOTE LIKE?????💀
Baby, Normani's mic was ON as well, you can find the live mic feed on Twitter. And honestly, I love your videos, and normally agree with your commentary, but this kinda felt like a "let me take a moment to sh*t on Normani real quick", then compliment the performance at the same time, which was disappointing to watch, especially since you didn't keep that same energy with anyone else. It's like people know and SEE that she's working against a label that is low key high key sabotaging her, a team that ain't worth a damn, and being strangely iced out of the industry, yet there seem to be people READY to sh*t on her, no matter what or how amazing she does, and it always seems to be the ones who claim to be her fans. SMH
Yeah I usually love all his commentary but I didn't enjoy this. He really put emphasis on the fact that he believes her mic was off but glossed over it when he discussed Dojo and not a single critique for Chloe's performance.
BELOVED she was lipsyncing.... most of it was lipped because u could literally hear the PRO-TOOLING in the audio...... that mic feed is just the pre-record MIX
Thisss!!!
@Gio tayyy no it wasn’t. Stop being obsessed w her she get a life
@@nielsenmakaba5777 she wasn’t. It’s called reverb and mic effects. The live feed is on Twitter
2013 vmas was the last iconic vmas. Every vmas since then has just been getting more and more meh
I love you. You got us in the comments writing think pieces lol
been like this needs more recognition, alone has the same type of vibe as well…
My favorite two from the album
I think Doja said something along the lines that-that song was the most hated by a lot of the other fans 💀🤚
@@JusticeForChuuu um no. That was the song imagine. A lot of fans love been like this cause it reminds them of her song streets off hot pink.
I Was hoping for Zachary to be as critical about Chloe’s performance as he was about Normani’s. If I’m honest as much as I wanted to like Chloe’s performance I didn’t think she did the the song Justice, it was a little all over the face and the unnecessary screaming and rolling around was very distracting and not a performance.
Agree, i’m actually surprised he had that reaction to normani performance knowing the circumstances. very disappointing
Chloe was great. It was her 1ST Solo performance. HER 1ST!!!
@@BlackberryTitties that doesn’t mean it can’t be good or bad because it’s her first…I don’t see why she should be praised if she could’ve done something else
She was feeling the music, plus the entire brand behind the song is her being a witch, so i think it gave alot of what was needed to understand that, which also explains the ugly tin foil outfit
@@BlackberryTitties technically that wasn’t Chloe’s first solo performance. She performed “Feeling Good” for ABC’s Juneteenth special about 2 months ago. That performance was much better than her VMA’s performance. However, I feel like with time, she’ll get better and better.
“I love ur there but ur not there” FAXXX😭
Its the fact that you're on here doing your own performance a d losing earrings for me, love to see your joy any time you see something you like. Loved Normani's performance, then Chloe's.
Normani was singing live cause 2nd chorus she messed up she gave an amazing performance and she did not lip sync during the motivation VMAs cause the mic was on but..
Don't worry Zachary hates Normani for blocking him...he really didn't care for her ,he only did for the fans and his viewers
That's facts
That’s not true, he used to support her but she just lacks consistency… I used to support her too, but I just became tired
right. ua-cam.com/video/IckIi0mM5Rg/v-deo.html
if you peep at the beginning she got the lyrics wrong. she said “this typa shit GOT you wilding” instead of “have you wilding” during the floor choreo, her mic was on and was heard hitting the floor. during the chorus before the bridge, she got the lyrics wrong. during the bridge her stomach and shoulders shows she was breathing hard and indicates she was singing live. at the end her mic hit the floor and it sounded like a thud. she added autotune for the futuristic and nostalgic feel. BUT HER MIC WAS ON!
you can literally hear her breathing lmfao
Tbh I hate when tiktokers and youtubers being invited to events like it becoming weird and washed out as to why they get invited
This is my 1st time seeing your videos and let me start off by saying, I love you and your views on artist! It's the way you're unbiased about everything! New subscriber here!❤❤❤
Watched the entire video & there are just too many favorites to list. YOU ROCK!!! with your crazzy a** LOL
Normani was actually singing there was no pre recording. You could hear her breathing. I watched it live on tv.
OMG!! OMGGGGG. I've been waiting on you Zachary. 😫 Also i saw your met gala look on instagram. You killed it😂 Congratulations on your voiceover work on "Lady Macbeth but with Dinosaurs". So so proud of you👏🏾❤👏🏾❤ 🙏🏾
Yeah b*tch, I'm here! 😂😂 I couldn't stop watching from the beginning, you're hilarious 😂
Yeah bish I'm here! Love you Zach!
Doja Cats performance was so beautiful. IMO😍❤😍❤ was Doja Cat inside "Planet Her"? CHLOÉ KILLED IT!! What a pleasure it is to see the new girls tear down the stage👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I'm glad you addressed Normani's ending. There's truly is a double standard. Is it for "shock value"? At this point in the 2020's are people still trying to pull Madonna and the other two type "moments".
I thought it was a tribute to somebody who did it before
@@deandria4463 no. The machine and dancing was a tribute to Janet Jackson but, Janet never did it on a girl. She used to do it on men
@@PinkPrincesa Ohhh ok, thank you for clearing up confusion
The last really iconic performance we've had on the VMA's was Lady Gaga in 2009.
Also the Beyonce one is 2016.
After that I don't remember a single performance.
When you said “Cinderella was terrible” I SCREAMED 🤣🤣🤣
Normani killed, best performance of the night.
I’m 38 yrs old and I know how amazing the VMA’S were in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. I watched the performances on UA-cam cause I don’t have time to watch commercials Chile. There was no reason for me to watch cause i didn’t know who those white singers or rappers were. I know Justin Bieber and now Jack Harlow cause of Lil Nas X. I’m like Issa Ray “I’m here for everybody black”👏🏽❤️🙋🏽♀️
Yesss facts !!
did u just say u didn't know who justin bieber was
@@starrstarrstarr no, she didn't say that.. wtf
I'm an early 90s baby. I remember watching the VMAs from 99-05. I recently have been asking myself if the older VMAs were so much better to me because the talent was that much better or if it was just the fact that I was young and easier to impress. What were your thoughts on the black performers that you watched from this year's show in comparison to the acts from the 90s and early 00s?
Same! I'm 37 and remember how exciting they used to be (Britney Spears' 2001 "Slave 4 U" performance, anyone?)! I just watched the performances on UA-cam too. LOL
‘A lot of b- ain’t ready for the call’ I screamed hahha I love this guy
“Lesbionic” i’m really out here gasping for my breath OMFG💀🤣
