A great video Colin. Been subscribed for a long time now and I've picked up some really helpful tips from your videos. Haven't been swimming outdoors for a while now but in my early days of outdoor swimming I gained a lot more confidence from watching your videos. I'm going to wait for the water to warm up a little I think before my next dip! Keep em coming Colin. ATB Darren.
I will share my swimming story.. I moved to a place where Sapanca Lake in Turkey is beside me. I waited to summer to swim. I then discovered that my favourite sport is swimming. How sad that I discovered this in.the age of 32. I siwm up to one hour. When winter came, I couldn't swim more than 30 min in the cold water cuz I could not feel my hands after that 😬.. I enjoy Summer swimming more cuz I can enjoy the natural scene of Sapanca mountains specially when.swimming when sun sets. But winter swimming fill me up with energy all the day.. Before I swam in winter I watched a lot of your videos.. Thanks a lot
Wow, thanks for this Zahir, Sapanca lake sounds amazing. Well done on your swimming and it is really cool that you checked out my videos early on. Good luck with your swimming. Colin
Hiya Colin. Great video! My friend Alan Stickland told me about you. He's even cold water swum with you. After 27 years living in the South East of England, I am to return North this year. Been cold water dipping to hell heal my recent double fracture of the pelvis! Can't kick my legs yet! One day, I'd love to visit your centre & enjoy a lake swim with you. Thanks again, for your informative, & peace inducing videos.
HI Wayne, Many thanks for watching the video and thank you to Alan! good luck with your recovery and hopefully see you in the water sometime soon. Colin
I found this video after having done 2 sea swims and wholly identify with Colin’s enthusiasm. He’s a great ambassador for his activity. If you don’t get what he’s enthusing about - do what he says and try it! In only 2 20 minute sea swims I have pulled myself clear of a mild funk / lockdown slump and feel generally more invigorated and enlivened. Research the hazards, take your own decisions and be cautious. I wear a synthetic hat with a plastic bag tucked over and into the hat. Keeps the worst of the sea off. A waterproof wat h allows you to set a timer as well. I know a guy who wears a whistle on his wrist. As I said, make your own judgements but try it!!!! It’s a free shot of dopamine every time😄
Hey Colin, What about doing a short intense aerobic 5 min session to raise your body temperture prior to the swim? Does it make us more cold resilient?
Hi Stephen, Thanks for the message. When I do my long distance swims, I actually wear my pool racing goggles, that are super small (HEAD Diamond mirrored goggles) they are pretty cheap as well). I've some nice Polaroid Arena Nimesis that I often use for winter swimming. The Arena ones are a bit chunkier and easier to handle when my hands and face are cold. But really it is whatever works for me in the pool, I'll use in the open water. Another factor is that I have a big nose across (at the top where the goggle nose piece sits) and the HEAD goggles have elastic straps across the nose, so they don't dig in.
Hey Colin I have been doing cold therapy for 2 years now. I went to Boston this year and went in a lake about 25 degrees. It felt wonderful. My question is that in the past 1-2 months my fingers and arms are getting cold and I am not enjoying like I use to. Any ideas what may be?
Hi Orlando, Boston must have some good places to swim. Are you swimming in skins or wetsuit? You may want to try wearing some good wetsuit gloves with sealed seams, such as these (they have 2,3 and 5mm. 3 should be enough to keep your hands a lot warmer: c-skins.com/collections/accessories/products/wired-3mm-gloves?variant=31636780843051 Otherwise it could be the way that you warm up, I mention in my video, but jumping in a shower straight away can be painful on your hands and feet. Some people do struggle with their hands (Raynauds): en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raynaud_syndrome Also when you compete in winter swimming we have to have a full medical, including ECG test, so it’s always good to have a check up.
I think a short cold dip is great for most people, you don't have to have a long swim. Do it with friends and have fun, rather than trying long hard cold swims. you can slowly build up your endurance. Thanks for watching the video.
I have a calibrated digital one (that I use at international events). It has a wire and probe, so I can measure 40cm below the surface. www.thermometersdirect.co.uk/calibrated-waterproof-thermometer--black-digital-handheld.html
Hi Tom, do you not get the neck pain in open water when it is warmer? it does sound like the cold is making you tense and your muscles tighten. I sometimes warm up before my swim by using bungee cords, so people have a run around to warm things up a bit. That may help, but do take it easy.
@@COLINHILLSWIMS hi , thanks for the advice . I don’t get neck pain in warm water and still young so must be down to the cold water and I’ll try the warm ups . Also just started watching your channel and think it’s great👍.
Hi colins , of France Bretagne the water is warm ! Not in uk ! Haha 😂But i like it swimm with nothing , maybi the wetsuit is good for the long training when th water is cold anyway . You do understand ? 4 degrés ! Pfff .... my minimum is 7 degrés with the snow on the beach !😢

I think there are other benefits to using a tow-float!

And again, if you set a timer it’s only a guide. Come out when you have to and when it feels like you’ve been in long enough. 👍
Hi , whenever I go cold water swimming I get terrible trap and neck pain , is this normal ? If so what can I do to stop it ?

Obviously expunge the water from your whistle if you ever need it but the beauty of the freedom of water is you make your own judgements.

yes, when it's cold, then you can go in for the enjoyment of the cold water, if you want to train, then a wetsuit is a nice idea.
